Atom in intense laser fields: from the generation of coherent short-wavelength radiation to the nonlinear properties of a gas medium

K. V. Lvov, Sergey Yu Stremoukhov

The interaction of intense laser fields with matter is accompanied by a multitude of phenomena, ranging from the generation of coherent radiation across various spectral ranges (from terahertz to soft X-rays) to the creation of beams of accelerated charged particles and micromodification of the volume and surface of various samples. To describe this diversity of phenomena, several theoretical approaches have been developed to date. These approaches utilize different approximations to address this complex nonlinear problem, allowing for the explanation of specific aspects of such interactions. The developed theoretical frameworks consider the interaction at both microscopic and macroscopic levels; at the microscopic level, they investigate the characteristics of single atoms interacting with laser fields, while at the macroscopic level, they analyze nonlinear susceptibilities that describe the nonlinear polarization of the medium during the propagation of laser radiation through it.This work presents an overview of methods describing some of the most commonly employed theoretical approaches to model the response of a medium at a microscopic (quantum-mechanical) level, as well as various methods for controlling the properties of generated coherent radiation.A model for the gas medium is described that accounts for both the response characteristics of individual atoms and allows for consideration of phase and quasiphase matching effects during radiation generation. The influence of medium parameters on the efficiency of generation and polarization properties of generated radiation is analyzed under both phase and quasi-phase matching conditions.A detailed description of an analytical method for calculating the nonlinear susceptibility of a gas medium is provided. The obtained values of nonlinear susceptibility for arbitrary orders may be useful in numerical calculations concerning the propagation of laser radiation in matter.Various channels for radiation generation are analyzed as parameters of the laser field are varied.

Large enhancement of fully resonant sum-frequency generation through quantum control via continuum states

A. K. Popov, Victor Kimberg, Thomas F. George

A theory of quantum control of short-wavelength sum-frequency generation, which employs the continuum states, is developed. The proposed scheme employs all-resonant coupling and trade-off optimization of the accompanying constructive and destructive quantum interference effects in the lower-order and higher-order polarizations controlled by the overlap of two autoionizinglike laser-induced continuum structures. The scheme does not rely on adiabatic passage, coherent population trapping or maximum atomic coherence as a means to facilitate maximum output. The opportunities for manipulating transparency of the medium and refractive index for the fundamental and generated radiations, as well as nonlinear polarization in the multiple-resonant medium, are shown. This opens the feasibility of creating frequency-tunable narrowband filters, polarization rotators, and dispersive elements for vacuum ultraviolet radiation. The features specific for quantum interference in Doppler-broadened media are investigated. The feasibility of almost complete conversion of long-wavelength fundamental radiation into generated short-wavelength radiation, and of a dramatic decrease in the intensity of required fundamental radiations, is shown.

Quantum-optical effects of resonant short laser pulse interaction with neon nanosecond discharge plasma in narrow shielded tubes

Ашурбеков Назир Ашурбекович, К. О. Иминов, M. B. Kurbangadzhieva +1 more

The interaction of polychromatic radiation of a dye laser with a neon gas-discharge plasma in shielded cylindrical tubes at medium gas pressures (1-30 Torr) near atomic spectral absorption lines of NeI atoms with wavelengths 650.6 and 656.2 nm was experimentally studied. Along the direction of propagation of the laser radiation, a shift in the central frequency of absorption is observed in the presence of inhomogeneities in the plasma column. The character of the optical transmission spectrum near narrow resonances was empirically shown to substantially depend on the density of absorbing atoms in a plasma; if this density exceeds 1012 cm-3, the contour of the transmission spectrum near the absorption resonance acquires a dispersive form. The general laws of the formation of nonstationary plasma transmission spectra depending on the laser power, the density of absorbing atoms, the nature of plasma inhomogeneities along the direction of propagation of laser radiation are examined in detail. The role of nonlinear and coherent effects and phase self-modulation during resonant interaction of short pulses of polychromatic laser radiation with gas-discharge plasma in narrow shielded tubes is discussed.
