Post-Quantum Security in Cloud Computing: Challenges and Solutions

N. Kowsalya

The emergence of quantum computing marks a revolutionary turning point in the evolution of information technology and cybersecurity. While quantum technologies promise extraordinary computational capabilities capable of solving highly complex scientific and industrial problems, they simultaneously introduce unprecedented risks to the cryptographic foundations that secure today’s digital world. Cloud computing, which has become the backbone of modern digital infrastructure, is particularly vulnerable to these evolving threats. As organizations increasingly rely on cloud platforms for data storage, communication, financial transactions, healthcare systems, research, and critical infrastructure management, ensuring long-term cryptographic security has become an urgent global priority. This book, Post-Quantum Security in Cloud Computing: Challenges and Solutions, has been developed to provide a comprehensive exploration of the rapidly evolving intersection between quantum computing, cloud security, and post-quantum cryptography (PQC). The primary objective of this work is to present both foundational concepts and advanced research perspectives that help readers understand the implications of quantum threats on existing cloud ecosystems and the emerging solutions designed to mitigate them. The chapters in this book collectively examine the vulnerabilities of classical cryptographic systems against quantum algorithms such as Shor’s Algorithm and Grover’s Algorithm, which threaten widely deployed security mechanisms including RSA, Diffie–Hellman, and Elliptic Curve Cryptography. The book further introduces the theoretical and practical foundations of post-quantum cryptography, covering lattice-based, code-based, multivariate, and hash-based cryptographic schemes that are being developed as quantum-resistant alternatives. Beyond theoretical concepts, this book emphasizes practical implementation challenges in cloud environments, including scalability, performance overhead, key management, hybrid cryptographic architectures, secure identity infrastructures, and deployment strategies across distributed and multi-cloud systems. Special attention has also been given to experimental evaluations, benchmarking methodologies, and emerging research directions that will shape the future of quantum-safe cloud security. This work is intended for students, academic researchers, cybersecurity professionals, cloud architects, and policymakers who seek a structured and research-oriented understanding of post-quantum cloud security. By combining theoretical insights with practical perspectives, the book aims to serve as a valuable reference for understanding current developments and preparing for the transition toward quantum-resilient computing infrastructures. The successful completion of this book would not have been possible without the contributions of the global research community working tirelessly in the fields of cryptography, quantum computing, cloud security, and distributed systems. Their groundbreaking research and continuous innovation have inspired many of the ideas discussed throughout this work. It is our sincere hope that this book will contribute meaningfully to the ongoing efforts toward building secure, scalable, and future-ready cloud systems capable of withstanding the challenges of the quantum era.

Are Enterprises Ready for Quantum-Safe Cybersecurity?

Tran Duc Le, Do, Phuc Hao, Truong Duy Dinh +1 more

Quantum computing threatens to undermine classical cryptography by breaking widely deployed encryption and signature schemes. This paper examines enterprise readiness for quantum-safe cybersecurity through three perspectives: (i) the technologist view, assessing the maturity of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD); (ii) the enterprise (CISO/CIO) view, analyzing organizational awareness, risk management, and operational barriers; and (iii) the threat actor view, evaluating the evolving quantum threat and the urgency of migration. Using recent standards (e.g., NIST's 2024 PQC algorithms), industry surveys, and threat intelligence, we synthesize findings via a SWOT analysis to map strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Results indicate uneven and generally insufficient preparedness: while PQC standards and niche QKD deployments signal technical progress, fewer than 5\% of enterprises have formal quantum-transition plans, and many underestimate "harvest now, decrypt later" risks. Financial, telecom, and government sectors have begun migration, but most industries remain exploratory or stalled by costs, complexity, and skills gaps. Expert consensus places cryptanalytically relevant quantum computers in the 2030s, yet delayed preparation could leave today's data vulnerable for decades. We recommend immediate steps: establishing crypto-agility, creating quantum transition roadmaps, prioritizing PQC deployment in high-value systems, and upskilling cybersecurity teams. A coordinated, proactive approach is essential to secure current and future digital assets in the quantum era.

Quantum-Resistant Security

Ramana Rao Kompella

Quantum computing poses an immense threat to classical digital infrastructure security, as existing encryption schemes are vulnerable to Shor’s and Grover’s algorithms. The accelerating quantum computing timeline makes this risk particularly imminent. Harvest-now-decrypt-later threats elevate the security risks further. While enterprises will eventually adopt the recently standardized post-quantum cryptograph (PQC) schemes as a way to defend against these attacks, many challenges remain to be addressed. To begin with, crypto observability in large enterprises is a challenging task, given the wide variety of hardware, applications, and software deployed with cryptography artefacts used across the depth and breadth of the infrastructure. We also cannot fully rely solely on PQC schemes to make an infrastructure quantum-safe, since just because they have not been broken yet does not mean they can never be broken in the future. Therefore, we need crypto resiliency, where we need to augment the use of PQC with other quantum-resistant network protocols. Finally, we need crypto agility as a foundational paradigm to deal with the constant new threats to ensure fast response and remediation to emerging threats. Enterprises need to consider all three approaches in a holistic manner in order to achieve a practical path towards quantum resistance.

Post-quantum Cryptography: Protecting Critical Data and Enhancing Cyber Resilience

Michael Fasulo

Quantum computing represents a significant threat to the asymmetric cryptographic algorithms currently used to protect the traditional data security infrastructure today’s enterprises depend upon. With Gartner predicting that by 2029 advances in quantum computing will render applications, data and networks protected by asymmetric cryptography unsafe, organisations must begin preparations to transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Organisations that fail to prepare for quantum today risk potentially exposing their sensitive data on a massive scale, as threat actors are already collecting encrypted enterprise data in anticipation of future quantum decryption capabilities. The migration to PQC involves updating risk registers and enabling the crypto agility that supports the rapid implementation of new algorithms and ensures organisations can adapt fast to new regulatory standards.
