Abstract

We report on the first observation of quantum interference in the spectrum of biphotons emitted via spontaneous parametric down-conversion from [110]-GaAs metasur-faces, enabled by an order of magnitude enhanced photon-pair generation rate.

Mie Resonances in the Spectrum of Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

We report on the first-time generation of biphotons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion driven by Mie-type resonances in subwavelength metasurfaces. The measured biphoton spectrum reveals that emission predominantly occurs at the resonant wavelength of the metasurface.

Beyond Brightness: Biphoton-State Engineering with Nonlinear Metasurfaces

Alexander S. Solntsev

Nonlinear metasurfaces have been demonstrated as ultrathin photon-pair sources, bringing resonant nanophotonics into a field traditionally dominated by bulk crystals and waveguides. Early experiments established spontaneous parametric down-conversion from nanoantennas and metasurfaces and showed resonant enhancement. Recent experiments and theoretical proposals address a more specific objective: a metasurface that emits the biphoton state required by a particular quantum-optical experiment. Resonant dispersion, mode symmetry, quasi-bound states in the continuum, guided-mode resonances, flatband design, multi-resonance interference, polarisation engineering and tunable emission geometry can shape both the pair-generation probability and the spatial, spectral and polarisation structure of the emitted state. This Perspective examines how these physical parameters determine the joint amplitude and which measurements establish the resulting two-photon state.

Anna N. Fedotova, Tomás Santiago‐Cruz, Vitaliy Sultanov +6 more

We experimentally demonstrate biphoton generation by spontaneous paramet-ric down-conversion in resonant metasurfaces. In our metasurfaces, Mie-type resonances enable over 7 times more efficient biphoton generation compared to an unstructured thin film.

Photon pairs bi-directionally emitted from a resonant metasurface

Changjin Son, Vitaliy Sultanov, Tomás Santiago‐Cruz +6 more

spontaneous parametric down conversion from a metasurface supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) leading to remarkable emission directivities. The pair generation rate is enhanced 67 times compared to the case of an unpatterned film of the same thickness and material. At the wavelength of the quasi-BIC resonance, photons are mostly emitted backwards, while their partners, spectrally detuned by only 8 nm, are emitted forwards. This behavior demonstrates fine spectral splitting of entangled photons and their bi-directional emission, never before observed in nanoscale sources. We expect this work to be a starting point for the efficient demultiplexing of photons in nanoscale quantum optics.

Biphoton interference from spectrally overlapping resonances in nonlinear metasurfaces

Ravyn Malatesta, Jiho Noh, Tomás Santiago‐Cruz +6 more

Two-photon interference between two photon pairs, or biphotons, requires the interfering biphotons to be indistinguishable. Previously, researchers have demonstrated this by coherently pumping two identical but separate nonlinear materials or using multipass interferometric setups. In contrast, we demonstrate two-photon interference of biphotons simultaneously emitted by two overlapping resonances in the same nonlinear source—a nonlinear metasurface.
