Abstract

This practical guidebook provides a comprehensive set of exercises which illustrate the most relevant concepts in a first course on quantum many-body theory either as part of advanced undergraduate or graduate courses. The problems come with detailed solutions which can easily be followed either by both professors and students. Quantum many-body theory is relevant in a number of fields, from condensed matter to astrophysics. The problems proposed in this book cover this variety of topics and are illustrated whenever possible with state-of-the-art-examples. Key Features: Provides a problems-based approach to quantum many-body theory, unlike existing textbooks. In-depth solutions to problems are presented, with the aim to maximize understanding and improve the teaching experience of the subject. The multidisciplinary nature of quantum many-body theory is explored in problems that deal with nuclear physics to ultracold atoms and astrophysics.

Contemporary Quantum Mechanics in Practice

Lilia M. Woods, Pablo Rodriguez-López

This helpful and pedagogical book offers problems and solutions in quantum mechanics from areas of current research, rarely addressed in introductory courses or textbooks. It is based on the authors' own experience of teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in quantum mechanics, and adapts problems from contemporary research publications to be accessible to students. Each section introduces key quantum mechanical concepts, which are followed by exercises that grow progressively more challenging throughout the chapter. The step-by-step solutions provide detailed mathematical derivations, and explore their application to wider research topics. This is an indispensable resource for undergraduate and graduate students alike, expanding the range of topics usually covered in the classroom, as well as for instructors and early-career researchers in quantum mechanics, quantum computation and communication, and quantum information.

Quantum Mechanics through Problems

Rocco Schiavilla

This book contains more than 300 problems in quantum mechanics with accompanying solutions, covering topics that are commonly taught in first-year graduate physics programs. Special care is given to each problem's formulation, with detailed and extensive solutions provided to support understanding. The problems span a range of difficulties, from basic exercises to more challenging applications and extensions of the standard material. Students are required to think critically and incorporate physics and mathematical techniques learned previously or concurrently to solve the more challenging problems. Each chapter begins by framing the particular topic being examined with a short theory section that sets the context for and motivates the problems that follow. This text is well suited for self-study or as a useful supplement to the existing quantum mechanics textbooks for upper-undergraduate and graduate students, and their instructors.

Introduction to Many-Body Physics

Piers Coleman

A modern, graduate-level introduction to many-body physics in condensed matter, this textbook explains the tools and concepts needed for a research-level understanding of the correlated behavior of quantum fluids. Starting with an operator-based introduction to the quantum field theory of many-body physics, this textbook presents the Feynman diagram approach, Green's functions and finite-temperature many-body physics before developing the path integral approach to interacting systems. Special chapters are devoted to the concepts of Fermi liquid theory, broken symmetry, conduction in disordered systems, superconductivity and the physics of local-moment metals. A strong emphasis on concepts and numerous exercises make this an invaluable course book for graduate students in condensed matter physics. It will also interest students in nuclear, atomic and particle physics.

Strongly Interacting Quantum Systems, Volume 1

Manuel Valiente, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

This book presents a detailed account of the theory and methods to tackle systems of strongly interacting particles from a bottom-up approach, which has been largely developed in the past decade by the authors and other experts in the field. This begins with a full characterisation of strongly interacting few-particle systems, which can be dealt with accurately using a variety of analytical and numerical techniques. These non-perturbative solutions can be used to gain qualitative and quantitative insight into more complex problems, especially the many-body problem. The book gives a detailed overview of the relevant and current research literature in the field, and is a valuable tool for researchers and graduate students.Part of IOP Series in Quantum Technology. Key features • Many worked examples of representative quantum systems, together with their physical interpretations and the main consequences of their solutions • Set of problems at the end of each chapter, not meant to complement the theory, but to give the reader dexterity in using the chapter’s methodologies • Timely discussion of a recently developed, and very active field summarised as “From Few- to Many-Body Quantum Physics of Strongly Interacting Particles”, and the physics of interacting quantum systems in inhomogeneous media • First, coherent, detailed monograph on the theory and methods of the field • Presents a rigorous account of the modern approaches to low-energy collisions and their use in few- and many-body physics, which have not appeared in book format • The book is relevant to a wide range of researchers and advanced students, from atomic and condensed matter physics, to photonics and nuclear physics • Written by pioneers and true experts in the field
