On the line profile coefficient for stimulated emission

J. Cooper, I. Hubený, Joachim Oxenius

It is pointed out that the line profile coefficients for spontaneous and stimulated emission are identical in low-intensity radiation fields. In more intense radiation fields, however, the stimulated emission profiles in the radiative transfer equation and in the rate equations for the atomic level populations may differ from each other, owing to their different physical nature. A seeming discrepancy between the stimulated emission profiles of the usual semi-classical aproach and a recent quantum mechanical approach by Cooper et al. (1982), which should also be valid for intense 'broadband' fields, is discussed and shown to have negligible consequences for low-intensity radiation fields.

THE COHERENCE OF RADIATION AND INCREASE IN ENTROPY

Guang-jiong Ni, Suqing Chen, ZHOU GU-SHENG +1 more

A model of radiation by multi-atoms is discussed. System A, composed of N atoms with two energy levels, is coupled with a single-mode radiation B. A and B are in turn coupled with two thermal reservoirs D and C respectively, and we also assume that all atoms which are located within a wave length of the radiation field have the same phase. Then under the approximation of long wave, rotating wave and mean fields, by introducing Markov approximation after using the method of density matrix, we have derived the of equations motion for systems A and B respectively. These equations are concerning with the following processes: the spontaneous emission of single atom, the absorption and induced emission stimulated by thermal radiation, the induced emission of N atoms stimulated by single mode coherent state radiation as well as the coherent spontaneous emission of this multi-atoms system. The latter two processes are actually the two kinds of superradiance originated from Dicke model and had been investigated previonsly. We have analysed these five processes by numerical calculations. Besides, the influence of these processes upon the evolution of atomic system attaining thermal equilibrium and the increase of entropy is also discussed. It is pointed out that the correlations inside a multi-atoms system would not be destroyed by coherent spontaneous emission, in contrast with the incoherent one which leads to the change of entropy in atomic system. However, only when the entropy of the two reservoirs has been taken into account, will it be possible to demonstrate the mono-tonic increase in total entropy.

On Synchronization of an Ensemble of Oscillators Under Superradiance Conditions

V.M. Kuklin, E.V. Poklonskiy

The problems of phase synchronization in an ensemble of oscillators or dipoles, and the mechanisms of coherent field generation in superradiance mode, are discussed. It is shown that an increase in the spread of the initial amplitudes of an ensemble of oscillators suppresses their phase synchronization and reduces the efficiency of field generation. The influence of noise is discussed; it is shown that, below the generation threshold, even an external initiating field cannot synchronize the phases of an ensemble of particles. When the generation threshold is exceeded, the initiating field may not be required. It is shown that the convergence of the oscillator phases with the field phases at the locations of moving oscillators is noticeable only near their exit from the system. At the same time, a complete coincidence of the phases of synchronized oscillators and the field phases in the region of their localization is not observed. Nevertheless, the intensity of the generation field in the superradiance mode significantly exceeds the spontaneous level, which allows us to speak about the signs of induced radiation. The features of the development of the quantum process of superradiance of an ensemble of dipoles are discussed, and a system of equations for its description is given. The features of the quantum analog of superradiance are qualitatively modeled, and the role of the Rabi frequency determining the dynamics of the population inversion is noted. The nutation of the population inversion in the region occupied by the field affect the field intensity not only in this local zone, but also in subsequent regions of the active zone. This explains the unusual nature of the generation development: the field growth in a certain region of the active zone first stabilizes and then decreases significantly. This decrease in intensity also occurs in the direction of radiation in the peripheral regions of the active zone, despite the large energy reserve in them in the form of unperturbed population inversion.
