Quantum entanglement entropy of collective excitations in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

Quasi-particle excitation in a Bose-Einstein condensate leads to quantum entanglement between real bosonic atoms in the system. By using spectral expansion method, the eigenvalues and eigenstates of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation are numerically calculated in a quasi-one-dimensional infinite square well potential. For the low-energy collective excitations of the quasi-particles, we explore the dependence of quantum entanglement entropy of the Bose-Einstein condensate on scattering length. Our results show that the entanglement entropy increases slowly with the increase of the scattering length, and such an increasing trend can be well described by a power function. These results are analogous to those in a one-dimensional uniform BEC, where the entanglement entropy of the Bogoliubov ground state is approximately proportional to the square root of the scattering length. This work provides a viable way for investigating many-particle entanglement in a quasi-one-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate where the quantum entanglement is closely related to the interaction strength between particles.

Entanglement and correlations in an exactly-solvable model of a Bose–Einstein condensate in a cavity

Ofir E. Alon, Lorenz S. Cederbaum

Abstract An exactly solvable model of a trapped interacting Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled in the dipole approximation to a quantized light mode in a cavity is presented. The model can be seen as a generalization of the harmonic-interaction model for a trapped BEC coupled to a bosonic bath. After obtaining the ground-state energy and wavefunction in closed form, we focus on computing the correlations in the system. The reduced one-particle density matrices of the bosons and the cavity are constructed and diagonalized analytically, and the von Neumann entanglement entropy of the BEC and the cavity is also expressed explicitly as a function of the number and mass of the bosons, frequencies of the trap and cavity, and the cavity-boson coupling strength. The results allow one to study the impact of the cavity on the bosons and vice versa on an equal footing. As an application we investigate a specific case of basic interest for itself, namely, non-interacting bosons in a cavity. We find that both the bosons and the cavity develop correlations in a complementary manner while increasing the coupling between them. Whereas the cavity wavepacket broadens in Fock space, the BEC density saturates in real space. On the other hand, while the cavity depletion saturates, and hence does the BEC-cavity entanglement entropy, the BEC becomes strongly correlated and eventually increasingly fragmented. The latter phenomenon implies single-trap fragmentation of otherwise ideal bosons, where their induced long-range interaction is mediated by the cavity. Finally, as a complimentary investigation, the mean-field equations for the BEC-cavity system are solved analytically as well, and the breakdown of mean-field theory for the cavity and the bosons with increasing coupling is discussed. Further applications are envisaged.

Particle creation in bose-einstein condensates: Numerical analysis of the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equation for trapped ultracold atoms

M. Kobayashi, Y Kurita, Takao Morinari +2 more

In this paper, we formulate quantum field theory on an analogue curved spacetime in a Bose-Einstein condensate where quantum particles on curved spacetime are equated with Bogoliubov quasi-particle excitations on the Bose-Einstein condensate. By using our formulation, we numerically investigate a particle creation in analogue expanding Universe which can be expressed as Bogoliubov quasiparticles in an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate and obtain its spectrum which shows the thermal Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the temperature of which can be experimentally accessible. This is the first direct numerical simulation for the particle creation and its spectrum on analogue curved spacetime by using the system of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Characteristic features of the Shannon information entropy of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Thangarasu Sriraman, Barnali Chakrabarti, Andrea Trombettoni +1 more

Calculation of the Shannon information entropy (S) and its connection with the order-disorder transition and with inter-particle interaction provide a challenging research area in the field of quantum information. Experimental progress with cold trapped atoms has corroborated this interest. In the present work, S is calculated for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dominant dipolar interaction for different dipole strengths, trap aspect ratios, and number of particles (N). Trapped dipolar bosons in an anisotropic trap provide an example of a system where the effective interaction is strongly determined by the trap geometry. The main conclusion of the present calculation is that the anisotropic trap reduces the number of degrees of freedom, resulting in more ordered configurations. Landsberg's order parameter exhibits quick saturation with the increase in scattering length in both prolate and oblate traps. We also define the threshold scattering length which makes the system completely disordered. Unlike non-dipolar BEC in a spherical trap, we do not find a universal linear relation between S and lnN, and we, therefore, introduce a general quintic polynomial fit rather well working for a wide range of particle numbers.

Universality in entanglement of quasiparticle excitations

Iztok Pižorn

We show that the entanglement entropy of single quasiparticle excitations of one dimensional systems exceeds the ground state entanglement entropy for log(2), if the correlation length of the system is finite. For quadratic fermion systems we show that the excess of entanglement is related to the number of quasiparticles in the excited state. This observation is confirmed by numerical examples of one dimensional quantum many-body systems, including nonintegrable. Tensor network methods to describe quasiparticle excitations are discussed.

Peierls instability, periodic Bose-Einstein condensates, and density waves in quasi-one-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures of atomic gases

Takahiko Miyakawa, Hiroyuki Yabu, T. Suzuki

We study the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) spin-polarized Bose-Fermi mixture of atomic gases at zero temperature. Bosonic excitation spectra are calculated in the random phase approximation on the ground state with uniform Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) and the Peierls instabilities are shown to appear in bosonic collective excitation modes with wave number $2{k}_{F}$ by the coupling between the Bogoliubov-phonon mode of bosonic atoms and the fermion particle-hole excitations. The ground-state properties are calculated in the variational method, and, corresponding to the Peierls instability, the state with a periodic BEC and fermionic density waves with the period $\ensuremath{\pi}∕{k}_{F}$ are shown to have a lower energy than the uniform one. We also briefly discuss the Q1D system confined in a harmonic oscillator potential and derive the Peierls instability condition for it.

Many-body effects in the excitation spectrum of weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices

Raphael Beinke, Shachar Klaiman, Lorenz S. Cederbaum +2 more

In this work, we study many-body excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in periodic one-dimensional optical lattices. In particular, we investigate the impact of quantum depletion onto the structure of the low-energy spectrum and contrast the findings to the mean-field predictions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations. Accurate results for the many-body excited states are obtained by applying a linear-response theory atop the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons equations of motion. We demonstrate for condensates in a triple well that even weak ground-state depletion of around $1%$ leads to visible many-body effects in the low-energy spectrum, which deviates substantially from the corresponding BdG spectrum. We further show that these effects also appear in larger systems with more lattice sites and particles, indicating the general necessity of a full many-body treatment.
