Abstract

The quantum Internet is profoundly impacting the world and is expected to be operational in the future. With the global wide-area quantum networks begin to take shape, drone-based quantum entanglement networks have attracted widespread attention. Compared to quantum links based on optical fibers or satellites, drone-based quantum entanglement networks can effectively address the need for responsive and on-demand quantum network coverage across diverse locations and operational times. To realize network construction, entanglement routing protocols pose a significant challenge. On the one hand, the fidelity of the entangled system degrades hop-byhop. On the other hand, the dynamics and limited energy of drone nodes are equally not negligible. However, existing works have not adequately addressed these issues. In this paper, we present a novel fidelity-guaranteed entanglement routing protocol for drone-based quantum networks (FGER_D). The FGER_D considers the node energy and quantum link vulnerability comprehensively, selects end-to-end fidelity as the routing metric, and employs multiple attempts' entanglement purification scheme to provide fidelity-guaranteed entanglement connections in noisy environments. Numerical simulations demonstrate that compared to existing algorithms, FGER_D improves network throughput by approximately 24% under default settings, while also ensuring network fidelity and extending network lifetime. Our work is expected to provide a theoretical basis for the deployment of drone-based entanglement distribution networks.

High-fidelity entanglement routing in quantum networks

Haoran Hu, Huazhi Lun, Zhi-Feng Deng +10 more

Quantum networks, endowed with their distinct quantum properties, are poised to emerge as indispensable platforms for the implementation of quantum information technology applications in the near future. Within the realm of quantum networks, the transmission of remote quantum information presents a pivotal and intricate challenge, commonly referred to as the entanglement routing problem. While previous efforts have delved into the intricacies of entanglement routing, there has been a notable oversight concerning the crucial parameter of entanglement fidelity. Hence, this paper introduces a novel Purification-enabled Entanglement Routing Algorithm (PERA). Initially, PERA utilizes the network throughput as the routing metric and ensures fidelity guarantees on all nodes in the link through a hop-by-hop purification process. Subsequently, acknowledging the probabilistic nature of entanglement purification, a strategy involving multiple attempts at purification is employed. Finally, a comprehensive utility function is deployed to address the path selection problem for multiple source–destination pairs. Numerical simulations confirm that PERA establishes entanglement connections with outstanding fidelity guarantees. Concurrently, PERA outperforms the baseline algorithm in terms of network throughput and resource utilization.

Fidelity-Guaranteed Entanglement Routing in Quantum Networks

Jian Li, Mingjun Wang, Kaiping Xue +4 more

Entanglement routing establishes remote entanglement connection between two arbitrary nodes, which is one of the most important functions in quantum networks. The existing routing mechanisms mainly improve the robustness and throughput facing the failure of entanglement generations, which, however, rarely include the considerations on the most important metric to evaluate the quality of connection, entanglement fidelity. To solve this problem, we propose purification-enabled entanglement routing designs to provide fidelity guarantee for multiple Source-Destination (S-D) pairs in quantum networks. In our proposal, we first consider the single S-D pair scenario and design an iterative routing algorithm, Q-PATH, to find the optimal purification decisions along the routing path with minimum entangled pair cost. Further, a low-complexity routing algorithm using an extended Dijkstra algorithm, Q-LEAP, is designed to reduce the computational complexity by using a simple but effective purification decision method. Finally, we consider the common scenario with multiple S-D pairs and design a greedy-based algorithm considering resource allocation and re-routing process for multiple routing requests. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms not only can provide fidelity-guaranteed routing solutions, but also has superior performance in terms of throughput, fidelity of end-to-end entanglement connection, and resource utilization ratio, compared with the existing routing scheme.

Distributed Entanglement Routing Scheme With Fidelity Guarantee in Quantum Networks

Jiesheng Tan, Zhonghui Li, Jian Li +2 more

Entanglement routing selects a path to establish entanglement connections between two arbitrary nodes in quan-tum networks, which plays an important role in quantum com-munication. In quantum networks, quantum decoherence and limited network performance make it challenging to distribute entangled pairs. Many entanglement routing schemes have been proposed to solve this issue but most of them are in a centralized and synchronized manner. However, they may be infeasible in large-scale quantum networks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a distributed and asynchronous entanglement routing scheme called DFER in which quantum nodes manage requests autonomously. The major challenge is quantum nodes have little knowledge about entangled pairs, which hinders the ability to establish fidelity guaranteed entanglement connections. To ad dress this challenge, we develop DLFR algorithm which estimates the fidelity of end-to-end entanglement connections based on link-level fidelity and calculates link-level fidelity requirement based on the characteristic of purification. Among nodes which meet link-level fidelity requirement, we design DFPS path se lection algorithm to select next hop with the highest expected throughput to distribute entangled pairs. Numerous simulation results demonstrate that DFER can efficiently distribute fidelity guaranteed entangled pairs with high throughput.

Fidelity-Guaranteed Entanglement Routing with Distributed Purification Planning

Anthony Gatti, Anoosha Fayyaz, Prashant Krishnamurthy +2 more

Many quantum-network applications require end-to-end Bell pairs whose fidelity exceeds a request-specific threshold, but existing entanglement routing algorithms either optimize only throughput without regard for fidelity or enforce fidelity guarantees using centralized controllers with global link-state knowledge. We present Q-GUARD, an online entanglement routing algorithm that enforces per-request fidelity thresholds within a distributed protocol model in which nodes exchange link-state information only with their $k$-hop neighbors. After link outcomes are realized in each slot, Q-GUARD builds per-link purification cost tables from realized Bell pairs, allocates per-hop fidelity targets using a Werner-state equal-split rule, and selects between candidate path segments using a segment-local expected-goodput (EXG) metric that jointly accounts for swap success, purification overhead, and resource availability. We also introduce Q-GUARD-WS, an extension that exploits per-link hardware quality estimates to allocate purification effort non-uniformly across hops. On synthetic 100-node topologies with heterogeneous link fidelity and stochastic BBPSSW purification, Q-GUARD raises the qualified success rate from under 20\% to over 85\% on 4-hop paths and nearly doubles the qualified service radius in Euclidean distance relative to throughput-only and naive-purification baselines, while Q-GUARD-WS provides additional throughput gains under high hardware heterogeneity.

Toward mobile quantum networks: a systematic network architecture for drone-based optical entanglement distribution

Haoran Hu, Ya Wang, Jiahao Li +9 more

The rapid advancement of quantum physical devices is transforming the quantum Internet from theory to practice. To achieve the envisioned full-time and all-location coverage, mobile quantum networks using drones have been proposed as a critical supplement to existing fiber and satellite quantum links, especially in scenarios where traditional optical links are unavailable. Although experiments in drone-based entanglement distribution have been successfully conducted, the field currently lacks a systematic network architecture and a dedicated protocol stack to integrate drone nodes and coordinate complex network functions efficiently. To address this gap, we propose a comprehensive design framework for drone-based quantum entanglement networks. First, we introduce a hierarchical architecture consisting of a quantum backbone relay network and quantum local area access networks. Second, for the local networks, we develop a clustering model based on the classical-quantum combinatorial metric to dynamically select and manage cluster heads. Third, we design a layered protocol stack that modularizes the end-to-end quantum information transmission process into well-defined functional layers. Subsequently, based on this architecture and protocol stack, we present the integrated design of a quantum drone node. Finally, we evaluate the designed network architecture. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework can significantly reduce the network overhead and improve the end-to-end entanglement distribution rate. Our work lays the foundation for the scalable development of mobile quantum networks.
