Logarithmic derivative operators, Cramér–Rao bounds, and Fisher information in quantum information theory

Abstract

In quantum theory, there are various possibilities of defining logarithmic-derivative operators, each giving rise to a different Likelihood operator, and also to quantum Fisher information (QFI). In each case, the Cramér–Rao (CR) bound is derived from the first principles. It is also noted that if one does not make (often tacitly made) an assumption that the density operator [Formula: see text] and its derivative commute, then they lead to different QFI. Applications to one-mode coherent states (an infinite-dimensional quantum system) and to two-level quantum systems are studied.

The likelihood operator and Fisher information in quantum probability

Kalyan B. Sinha, Ritabrata Sengupta

We study the problem of Quantum Likelihood Operators (LO) and their connection with quantum Fisher information (QFI). It is observed that the present approaches to this problem tacitly assume commutativity of parametrised density matrix $ρ_θ$ and its derivative, which, in general, need not be true, and this has nontrivial consequences in QFI. As examples, we discuss the parametrised two-level system exhaustively, and, as a further example, the one-mode coherent states of an infinite-dimensional system.

Exact Characterization of the Holevo Bound by a Quantum Fisher Information Family

Koji Yamaguchi, Hiroyasu Tajima

The quantum Cramér-Rao bound constrains the precision of parameter estimation through the symmetric logarithmic derivative quantum Fisher information (SLD QFI). It is asymptotically achievable for regular single-parameter estimation models, but generally not in the multiparameter setting, where optimal measurements for different parameters may be incompatible. For multiparameter estimation, allowing collective measurements, the corresponding asymptotically achievable precision limit is the Holevo bound, whose standard formulation is an optimization over auxiliary Hermitian operators. We bridge this apparent difference in formulation by giving an exact characterization of the Holevo bound in terms of a family of QFIs interpolating between the SLD and right logarithmic derivative (RLD) QFIs. Specifically, for any locally identifiable finite-dimensional estimation problem, we prove that the operator-feasible region in the standard variational definition of the Holevo bound coincides with the intersection of the regions defined by the corresponding Cramér-Rao-type matrix constraints for the entire QFI family. This characterization also applies to rank-deficient states and does not require any prior choice of weight matrix. Consequently, the conventional weight-dependent Holevo bound is recovered by minimizing the corresponding weighted cost over the resulting common feasible region.

Cramér-Rao bound and quantum parameter estimation with non-Hermitian systems

Jianning Li, Liu, Haodi, Zhihai Wang +1 more

The quantum Fisher information constrains the achievable precision in parameter estimation via the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, which has attracted much attention in Hermitian systems since the 60s of the last century. However, less attention has been paid to non-Hermitian systems. In this Letter, working with different logarithmic operators, we derive two previously unknown expressions for quantum Fisher information, and two Cramér-Rao bounds lower than the well-known one are found for non-Hermitian systems. These lower bounds are due to the merit of non-Hermitian observable and it can be understood as a result of extended regimes of optimization. Two experimentally feasible examples are presented to illustrate the theory, saturation of these bounds and estimation precisions beyond the Heisenberg limit are predicted and discussed. A setup to measure non-Hermitian observable is also proposed.

Multiparameter quantum estimation theory in quantum Gaussian states

Bakmou Lahcen, Mohammed Daoud A, Rachid ahl laamara

Abstract Multiparameter quantum estimation theory aims to determine simultaneously the ultimate precision of all parameters contained in the state of a given quantum system. Determining this ultimate precision depends on the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) which is essential to obtaining the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. This is the main motivation of this work which concerns the computation of the analytical expression of the QFIM. Inspired by the results reported in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 52 035304 (2019), the general formalism of the multiparameter quantum estimation theory of quantum Gaussian states in terms of their first and second moments is given. We give the analytical formulas of right logarithmic derivative and symmetric logarithmic derivative operators. Then we derive the general expressions of the corresponding quantum Fisher information matrices. We also derive an explicit expression of the condition which ensures the saturation of the quantum Cramér–Rao bound in estimating several parameters. Finally, we examine some examples to clarify the use of our results.

Quantum Cramér-Rao bound for quantum statistical models with parameter-dependent rank

Yating Ye, Xiao-Ming Lu

Recently a widely used computation expression for quantum Fisher information was shown to be discontinuous at the parameter points where the rank of the parametric density operator changes. The quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound can be violated on such singular parameter points if one uses this computation expression for quantum Fisher information. We point out that the discontinuity of the computation expression of quantum Fisher information is accompanied with the unboundedness of the symmetric logarithmic derivation operators, based on which the quantum Fisher information is formally defined and the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound is originally proved. We argue that the limiting version of the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound still holds when the parametric density operator changes its rank by closing the potential loophole of involving an unbounded SLD operator in the proof of the bound. Moreover, we analyze a typical example of the quantum statistical models with parameter-dependent rank.

Bounds on quantum multiple-parameter estimation with Gaussian state

Yang Gao, Hwang Lee

We investigate the quantum Cramer-Rao bounds on the joint multiple-parameter estimation with the Gaussian state as a probe. We derive the explicit right logarithmic derivative and symmetric logarithmic derivative operators in such a situation. We compute the corresponding quantum Fisher information matrices, and find that they can be fully expressed in terms of the mean displacement and covariance matrix of the Gaussian state. Finally, we give some examples to show the utility of our analytical results.
