Quantum Oscillator As an Open System

Abstract

Abstract Using algebraic perturbation theory, the applicability of the quantum oscillator model within the theory of open quantum systems is demonstrated. The case of resonant and nonresonant interactions between two spatially separated oscillators is considered, where each oscillator interacts with its own thermostat at different temperatures. The possibility of the decay of an isolated oscillator into the thermostat of the oscillator-mediator under conditions of its nonresonant interaction with the latter is demonstrated. In all the cases presented, algebraic perturbation theory does not lead to any nonphysical features or contradictions, such as violations of the second law of thermodynamics or discrepancies in the description of these cases within the frameworks of the global and local approaches.

Anharmonic Quantum Oscillator as a Model of Resonant Optics

Ashat M. Basharov

Abstract The specific features of the theory of resonant interactions of electromagnetic coherent fields with an anharmonic oscillator, as compared to the case of a multilevel atom, are highlighted. It is shown that within the framework of the local approach—the algebraic resonance perturbation theory—it is possible to account for the requirements of the global approach of the theory of open quantum systems. Based on the auxiliary model of the ‘‘internal nonlinearity’’ of the anharmonic oscillator, the possible conditions for the resonance of a coherent wave with an anharmonic oscillator involving the absorption of a single photon are analyzed.

Quantum Oscillator in the Thermostat as a Model in the Thermodynamics of Open Quantum Systems

Aleksander Sukhanov

The quantum oscillator in the thermostat is considered as the model of an open quantum system. Our analysis will be heavily founded on the use of the Schroedinger generalized uncertainties relations (SUR). Our first aim is to demonstrate that for the quantum oscillator the state of thermal equilibrium belongs to the correlated coherent states (CCS), which imply the saturation of SUR at any temperature. The obtained results open the perspective for the search of some statistical theory, which unifies the elements of quantum mechanics and GDT; this in turn will give the foundation for the modification of the standard thermodynamics.

A Local Approach to the Theory of Open Optical Quantum Systems and “Violation” of the Second Law of Thermodynamics

M. K. Aleksashin, Ashat M. Basharov, Andrew I. Trubilko

Abstract— In correct calculation of the energy flows between the thermostats into which nonresonantly coupled quantum harmonic oscillators decay, there is no violation of the second law of thermodynamics in using the local approach reported earlier.

The Effective Hamiltonian Method in the Thermodynamics of Two Resonantly Interacting Quantum Oscillators

Andrew I. Trubilko, Ashat M. Basharov

Abstract We investigate the classical problem of two resonantly interacting oscillators each of which is coupled to “its own” heat bath based on the effective Hamiltonian method and the quantum stochastic differential equation (in contrast to the well-known “global” and “local” approaches). We show that in the second order of the algebraic perturbation theory, each of the oscillators turns out to be also coupled to the “foreign” heat bath. We calculate the steady-state heat flows and prove that there is no heat flow from the cold heat bath to the hot one, as evidenced by some results of the local approach.

Theory of relaxation and pumping of quantum oscillator non-resonantly coupled with the other oscillator

Andrew I. Trubilko, Ashat M. Basharov

Abstract The paper shows mechanisms of both the pumping and energy decay of an ‘isolated’ oscillator. The oscillator is only coupled non-resonantly with the adjacent oscillator which resonantly interacts with the thermal bath environment. Under these conditions the ‘isolated’ oscillator begins interacting with the thermal bath environment of the adjacent oscillator. The conclusion is based on the kinetic equation derived relative to anti-rotating terms of the initial Hamiltonian. The original model is reduced to two ‘independent’ open systems, with each containing original oscillators connected with their effective independent thermal baths, whose parameters are determined. The paper also gives a description of the obtained model in terms of quantum stochastic differential equations.
