Impeded Bloch Oscillation and Nonlinear Landau-Zener Tunneling of Bose-Einstein Liquid Droplets in Optical Lattices

Abstract

Due to high density and incompressibility, attempts to enter the quantum regime for usual liquids are prohibited. However, incorporating the high-order Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction, a gas-to-liquid phase transition violating the van der Waals model has been observed in two-component mixtures and dipolar condensates when the particle number exceeds a certain threshold. By tuning interatomic interactions, creating dilute self-bound Bose-Einstein quantum droplets (QD) provides strong evidence of phenomena beyond mean-field (MF) effects [1]. In this work, we theoretically investigated the nonlinear effects on the Bloch oscillation (BO) and the Landau-Zener tunneling (LZT) of a QD in an one-dimensional optical lattice (OL) perturbed by an external force.

Experimental properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices: Bloch oscillations, Landau-Zener tunneling, and mean-field effects

Matteo Cristiani, O. Morsch, Jörg Helge Müller +2 more

We report experimental results on the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices. By accelerating the lattice, we observed Bloch oscillations of the condensate in the lowest band, as well as Landau-Zener (LZ) tunneling into higher bands when the lattice depth was reduced and/or the acceleration of the lattice was increased. The dependence of the LZ tunneling rate on the condensate density was then related to mean-field effects modifying the effective potential acting on the condensate, yielding good agreement with recent theoretical work. We also present several methods for measuring the lattice depth and discuss the effects of the micromotion in the time-orbiting-potential trap on our experimental results.

Quantum droplets in one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures: beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang description

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Karima Abbas

Abstract The static and dynamic properties of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixture are discussed in the spirit of the Hartree–Fock-Bogoliubov theory. This latter enables us to provide beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the equation of state at both zero and finite temperatures. In the uniform case our results for the ground-state energy and the critical temperature are confirmed through comparison with Quantum Monte-Carlo simulation and with available theoretical results. The density profiles are supported by numerical simulations of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation which selfconsistently includes higher-order terms originating from the normal and anomalous fluctuations under the local density approximation. We show that the density exhibits a dip near its center in the flat-top plateau region for large interspecies interactions. We exemplify the impact of the beyond LHY corrections on the spatiotemporal evolution of the self-bound droplet in the presence of excitation induced by periodic density modulation. It is found that higher-order corrections may lead to the formation of a train of small droplets. We then extend our study for the case of inhomogeneous droplets in quasi one-dimensional Bose mixtures.

Bloch Oscillations and Mean-Field Effects of Bose-Einstein Condensates in 1D Optical Lattices

O. Morsch, Jörg Helge Müller, Matteo Cristiani +2 more

We have loaded Bose-Einstein condensates into one-dimensional, off-resonant optical lattices and accelerated them by chirping the frequency difference between the two lattice beams. For small values of the lattice well depth, Bloch oscillations were observed. Reducing the potential depth further, Landau-Zener tunneling out of the lowest lattice band, leading to a breakdown of the oscillations, was also studied and used as a probe for the effective potential resulting from mean-field interactions as predicted by Choi and Niu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2022 (1999)]. The effective potential was measured for various condensate densities and trap geometries, yielding good qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations.

Quantum Bose-Bose droplets at a dimensional crossover

Paweł Zin, Maciej Pylak, Tomasz Wasak +2 more

We study liquid quantum droplets in a mixture of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates under variable confinement introduced along one or two spatial dimensions. Although the atom-atom scattering has a three-dimensional character, discreteness of the available modes in the reduced dimension(s) strongly influences the zero-point energy, which for a weakly interacting three-dimensional system is given by the Lee-Huang-Yang term. Here, we generalize the result of Lee, Huang, and Yang and calculate the higher order corrections to the mean-field energy for a single component Bose-Einstein condensate under condition of a tight confinement in one or two spatial directions. We apply our results to the two-component mixture of bosonic species under conditions favorable for the creation of quantum liquid droplets, which constitute a perfect playground for studies of the beyond mean-field effects. Our findings allow one to analyze the properties of quantum droplets at the dimensional crossover and provide demanding conditions for accessing quasilow dimensions. They also pave a way for experimental exploration of this state of matter in reduced dimensions.

Dynamics of quantum droplets in an external harmonic confinement

Maitri R. Pathak, Ajay Nath

Recent theoretical and experimental results show that one-dimensional (1D) weakly interacting atomic Bose-Bose mixtures with repulsive interspecies mean field (MF) interaction are stabilized by attractive quadratic beyond-mean-field (BMF) effects into self-bound quantum droplet (QD) in free space. Here, we construct an exact analytical model to investigate the structure and dynamics of QDs in presence of external harmonic confinement by solving the 1D extended Gross-Pitäevskii equation (eGPE) with temporal variation of MF and BMF interactions. The model provides the analytical form of wavefunction, phase, MF and BMF nonlinearities. The generation of QDs and interesting droplet to soliton transition in presence of regular/expulsive parabolic traps by taking the comparable MF and BMF interactions are illustrated. We derive the phase diagram of the droplet-soliton phase transition between amplitude of MF, BMF interactions and harmonic oscillator frequency. The strength and form of oscillator frequency are identified as key parameter for tuning the compression, fragmentation and transport of droplets. Finally, the stability of the obtained solutions are confirmed from Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion and are found stable.

Nonlinearity-induced effects of Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials

O. Morsch

In BECs, collisions between condensate atoms give rise to a nonlinear contribution to the dynamics which is typically included as a mean-field term in the Schrodinger equation. This nonlinearity leads to a modification of well-known effects associated with matter waves in periodic potentials and adds a number of phenomena that are absent in the linear problem. We focused on the dynamics of a BEC in an accelerated optical lattice. In the linear case, this gives rise to Bloch oscillations and, above a critical acceleration, to Landau-Zener tunneling. In the nonlinear case, the probability for Landau-Zener tunneling is modified depending on the direction in which it occurs between two bands. By varying the acceleration of the optical lattice and measuring the time-dependence of the interference contrast, we were able to identify the instability regime and the characteristic time in which the dynamical instability destroys the interference pattern. Furthermore, we observed an increase in the condensate dimensions perpendicular to the lattice direction when the unstable region was reached. This indicates a mechanism whereby the longitudinal instability leads to an increase in the transverse release energy
