Abstract

Dance of Light Light flees from Young's twin slits- Wave or particle? No verdict claims. Single photon dance: paths blur into superposition states, collapsing into stardust. An ode to a quantum battery: Store energy in thermodynamic cage. Behold, a new age has dawned! See Research Article e00326 by Xiao-Feng Qian, Shao-Ming Fei, Ming-Xing Luo and co-workers for more details.

Photonic Metrology with Hierarchic Quantum Frequentist Bounds

Xin‐Zhu Liu, Yan‐Han Yang, Manuel Gessner +4 more

Photonic Metrology A hybrid classical-quantum framework tightens the quantum Cramér-Rao bound for finite data by incorporating generalized unbiasedness constraints. This hierarchy of frequentist bounds converges to the QCRB with more measurements and is validated on a photonic platform for single-qubit phase estimation. More information can be found in the Research Article by Manuel Gessner, Augusto Smerzi, Ming-Xing Luo, and co-workers (10.1002/adpr.202500199).

Classically light is treated as an electromagnetic wave, or more precisely, a superposition of many waves each with an amplitude and phase. In reality however, light is composed of tiny indivisible quanta of energy called photons. The oldest of these flavors that humanity has known since its inception is thermal light. Thermal light is formed by random thermal motions of charges in a material. If this material is in thermodynamic equilibrium the radiation is called blackbody radiation and can be described by Planck’s law. Common examples of thermal radiation include sunlight, incandescent bulb emission, infrared radiation emitted by animals, and the cosmic microwave background radiation. Quantum dots are nanometer-sized semiconductor particles whose optical and electronic properties, due to quantum confinement in all three directions, differ from those of larger particles. Color Centers are defects in wide bandgap crystals in which the defect has atom-like energy levels in the bandgap of the material.

Light and Optics

You’ve also seen that the electromagnetic wave alone is insucient to describe how light behaves (Chapter 4). Rather, light consists of small quanta of energy called photons. In carefully designed experiments, individual photons can be detected and counted. A complete view of light includes both waves and particle-like photons, and we are left to contemplate the resulting waveparticle duality.

Photonic Entanglement: Photonic Entanglement Based on Nonlinear Metamaterials (Laser Photonics Rev. 14(5)/2020)

Yang Ming, Wang Zhang, Jie Ying Tang +4 more

In article number 1900146, Yang Ming, Yushen Liu, Yan-qing Lu, and co-workers investigate parametric down conversion processes in nonlinear metamaterials for generating entangled photon states. As the nanostructures of metamaterials can be flexibly designed, such a system is quite suitable for modulating photonic entanglement in spatial degrees of freedom. The entangled states of orbital angular momentum are considered in detail and proven to be available.
