Quantum-Secure IoT Networks for the 6G Era: Post-Quantum Cryptography, Blockchain Integration, and Trust Architectures - A Comprehensive Review

Karthik Kumar Vaigandla

The rapid convergence of sixth-generation (6G) networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) offers enormous potential for ultra-reliable, low-latency, and massive device connectivity. However, this integration also raises security and privacy concerns, particularly in light of new threats from quantum computing that could undermine traditional cryptography. The architecture of quantum-safe IoT networks that can withstand post-quantum security threats is thoroughly discussed in this review. It addresses the challenges related to how to use blockchain technology to provide decentralized trust as well as secure transactions, how to use post-quantum cryptographic algorithms to protect data confidentiality, and the best way to use a trust management architecture to improve identity verification, authorization, and authentication in the diverse IoT environment. The paper then examines scalability considerations, resource constraints, and interoperability problems that impact safe IoT deployments in the 6G era. This work serves as a roadmap for researchers and practitioners who aim to create robust and future IoT infrastructure and then maintain their security in a post-quantum world by integrating recent research patterns, solution development, and considerations related to real-world implementation.

Challenges and Opportunities in Implementing Quantum-Safe Key Distribution in IoT Devices

Mohd Amaan Khan, Digvijay Puri

In the era of ubiquitous integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the extensive adoption of cloud computing, ensuring the security of data transmission has assumed paramount significance. Conventional cryptographic systems, susceptible to quantum attacks due to the emergence of quantum computers, mandate the creation and deployment of quantum-safe key distribution protocols. This research delves into the exploration and examination of quantum-safe key distribution protocols explicitly crafted for fortifying IoT networks and cloud environments. By scrutinizing the distinctive challenges presented by these dynamic and interconnected ecosystems, the investigation assesses the robustness of quantum-safe protocols in mitigating potential threats. The study delves into the intricacies of quantum-safe cryptographic mechanisms, their adaptability to the IoT and cloud paradigms, and their capacity to bolster the security infrastructure against nascent quantum threats. The findings enrich the ongoing discourse on quantum-resistant cybersecurity solutions, providing a groundwork for the development of resilient and forward-looking cryptographic protocols imperative for safeguarding sensitive information in the evolving landscape of IoT networks and cloud computing. The technical terminologies encompassed in this exploration include quantum-safe protocols, cryptographic mechanisms, adaptability, robustness, and quantum-resistant cybersecurity solutions, contributing to the specialized understanding of quantum-safe key distribution in these advanced technological environments.

Quantum Threat Defense: A Framework for Migrating IoT-Based Healthcare Systems

Asif Alif, Khondokar Fida Hasan, Basker Palaniswamy +1 more

Smart healthcare industry is increasingly relying on Internet of Things (IoT) devices to improve patient care and operational efficiency. However, the cryptographic algorithms that enable fundamental security and are widely used in these cyber systems are vulnerable to attacks by emerging quantum computers - known as Quantum Threat. This paper examines the quantum threat to healthcare IoT across the four layers of the IoT architecture: physical, network, perception, and application. It proposes a comprehensive migration framework integrating a phased hybrid approach with crypto-agility to transition healthcare IoT systems to quantum-safe cryptography. This framework prioritises resource-constrained devices, emphasises interoperability, and considers the challenges of vendor readiness and infrastructure upgrades. This paper contributes a detailed, phased migration plan specifically tailored to the unique security needs and resource limitations of IoT-based healthcare systems.
