Abstract

Scheduling in quantum networks involves strategically allocating quantum resources to maximize entanglement distribution efficiency and overall performance. Unlike classical networks, quantum systems lack conventional buffering mechanisms, making traditional scheduling paradigms less effective. Existing quantum network algorithms predominantly focus on routing algorithms to identify optimal entanglement paths, often neglecting timeslot scheduling for mitigating resource contention and transmission latency, particularly under multi-user environments. To address these challenges, we propose a routing algorithm tightly integrated with priority-based dynamic scheduling. The algorithm not only discovers efficient entanglement paths but also optimizes resource utilization for concurrent requests. Simulation results confirm that this approach conserves quantum resources, reduces latency, and substantially boosts network performance, providing a robust solution for multi-user quantum environments.

Effective Resource Scheduling Design for Concurrent Competing Requests in Quantum Networks

Haoran Hu, Huazhi Lun, Ya Wang +10 more

Quantum networks, as a pivotal platform to support numerous quantum applications, have the potential to far exceed traditional communication networks. Establishing end-to-end entanglement connections with guaranteed fidelity is a key prerequisite for realizing the functionality of quantum networks. Entanglement purification techniques are commonly used in the entanglement distribution process to provide end-to-end entanglement connections that meet the fidelity requirements. Since the purification operation sacrifices a certain amount of entanglement resources, it is critical and challenging to efficiently utilize the scarce entanglement resources in quantum networks with concurrent competing requests. To address this problem, we propose a novel demand-oriented resource scheduling (DRS) algorithm. Considering the overall network demand, DRS introduces a congestion factor to evaluate the resource demand of each link, and performs purification operations sequentially based on the congestion level of the links, thus avoiding the excessive consumption of entanglement resources of bottleneck links. Extensive simulation results show that the DRS algorithm can achieve higher network throughput with similar resource conversion rates compared to traditional resource allocation schemes. Our work provides a new scheme for the resource scheduling problem under concurrent competing requests, which can promote the further development of existing entanglement routing techniques.

QoS-Aware Reinforcement Learning Routing for Entanglement Networks

Diego Medeiros De Abreu, Antônio Abelém

Abstract Entanglement-based quantum networks require intelligent routing mechanisms that not only maximize fidelity and connectivity but also ensure service differentiation under varying traffic conditions. In this work, we propose a novel QoS-aware traffic modeling and scheduling framework integrated into a reinforcement learning-based quantum routing agent. Unlike prior approaches that assume deterministic or uniform request arrival patterns, our model introduces stochastic and bursty traffic scenarios using Erlang and ON/OFF distributions to emulate realistic quantum workloads. Each entanglement request is assigned a set of QoS attributes, including fidelity requirements, time-to-live constraints, and priority levels. We then extend the reward function of the agent to consider deadline compliance and resource efficiency in addition to fidelity. Through simulation, we compare the proposed method against state-of-the-art baselines, including DQRA and Proactive RL, under both best-effort and QoS-prioritized scheduling modes. Results demonstrate that our approach maintains higher success rates and lower latency for high-priority requests, while preserving entanglement fidelity and efficient resource allocation across varying network loads. This study highlights the importance of integrating QoS mechanisms into quantum routing to support scalable and differentiated quantum services

Scheduling Concurrent Entanglement Requests in Quantum Networks

Gongyu Ni, Lester Ho

This paper investigates resource allocation for entanglement distribution in multi-node, multi-channel quantum networks at the metropolitan scale. A multi-slot quantum network simulation framework is developed across physical and network layers, incorporating heterogeneous link characteristics, limited quantum memories, request queuing, retry mechanisms, and concurrent entanglement distribution. Based on this framework, a centralized scheduling architecture is proposed to coordinate quantum memories, communication channels, and routing paths for multiple simultaneous entanglement requests. Three classes of resource allocation strategies are evaluated: heuristic approaches, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimization method, and a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO)-based reinforcement learning approach. The heuristic schemes reveal fundamental trade-offs between request delay and entanglement success rate: Dynamic Efficient minimizes delay, Success Enhancement improves success probability through adaptive multi-path allocation, and Static Efficient provides a balance between these objectives. The MILP approach achieves optimized resource allocation by jointly considering request handling and multi-path assignment, while the PPO-based method learns adaptive scheduling policies to improve overall performance. Simulation results demonstrate that these approaches provide different performance advantages in terms of request delay, entanglement success rate, capacity utilization, and request handling rate, highlighting the trade-offs between efficiency and reliability in metropolitan-scale quantum network scheduling.

Effective Entanglement Scheduling in Quantum Networks Via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Xun Wang, Longbo Huang, John C. S. Lui

Quantum entanglement is the cornerstone of quantum network communication, yet the qubit resources required to establish it are severely limited. Moreover, users within the network impose strict delay constraints on entanglement requests due to various factors, such as the real-time requirements of upper-layer applications or the finite coherence time of userside quantum memories. Consequently, effectively scheduling scarce qubit resources to serve these time-sensitive requests presents a significant challenge. This difficulty is exacerbated by the partial observability of quantum systems and the time-varying nature of qubit generation rates, rendering traditional scheduling algorithms ineffective. Furthermore, while Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) offers a promising avenue for quantum network optimization, existing research primarily focuses on network-layer routing, overlooking the finer-grained entanglement scheduling problem subject to strict delay and resource constraints. To bridge this gap, we propose the Deep Quantum Request Scheduler (DQRS), a novel DRL-based algorithm designed to maximize service quality under these dual constraints. Specifically, DQRS integrates a spatio-temporal branching architecture and virtual action slots within an ActorCritic framework. This design enables robust scheduling with continuous actions while adaptively managing fluctuating qubit budgets. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that DQRS achieves up to 44 % performance improvement over traditional methods and a 4 % gain compared to state-of-the-art DRL benchmarks across various resource constraints and observability settings, validating the robustness of the proposed approach.

Effective routing design for remote entanglement generation on quantum networks

Changhao Li, Tianyi Li, Yi-Xiang Liu +1 more

Abstract Quantum network is a promising platform for many ground-breaking applications that lie beyond the capability of its classical counterparts. Efficient entanglement generation on quantum networks with relatively limited resources such as quantum memories is essential to fully realize the network’s capabilities, the solution to which calls for delicate network design and is currently at the primitive stage. In this study we propose an effective routing scheme to enable automatic responses for multiple requests of entanglement generation between source-terminal stations on a quantum lattice network with finite edge capacities. Multiple connection paths are exploited for each connection request while entanglement fidelity is ensured for each path by performing entanglement purification. The routing scheme is highly modularized with a flexible nature, embedding quantum operations within the algorithmic workflow, whose performance is evaluated from multiple perspectives. In particular, three algorithms are proposed and compared for the scheduling of capacity allocation on the edges of quantum network. Embodying the ideas of proportional share and progressive filling that have been well-studied in classical routing problems, we design another scheduling algorithm, the propagatory update method, which in certain aspects overrides the two algorithms based on classical heuristics in scheduling performances. The general solution scheme paves the road for effective design of efficient routing and flow control protocols on applicational quantum networks.

SwappingBoost: Optimizing Entanglement Routing by Mitigating Bottlenecks in Quantum Networks

Bing Yang, Zhonghui Li, Kaiping Xue +3 more

Entanglement distribution between distant quantum nodes plays an important role in quantum networks. However, due to the unique properties of quantum mechanics and hardware limitations, entanglement resources in quantum networks are scarce. Quantum links that fail to meet request demands become bottleneck links, significantly hindering remote entanglement distribution in multi-request scenarios. In this paper, we propose an entanglement routing scheme called SwappingBoost that can effectively reduce resource consumption along entanglement distribution paths, alleviating the negative impact of bottleneck links. SwappingBoost first employs a decreasing resource reservation method to compensate for resource losses caused by failed entanglement swapping, freeing up pre-reserved resources on downstream links to accommodate other paths and requests. Besides, SwappingBoost introduces a path-priority-based rounding algorithm that achieves integer-level resource allocation while ensuring balanced resource allocation. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that SwappingBoost can effectively reduce the load of bottleneck links, enhancing network throughput while maintaining fairness among multiple requests.
