Abstract

With the rapid development of deep learning research and physical layer communication applications, deep learning-based channel coding has gradually become a research hotspot. In this paper, we propose a LDPC decoding network based on neural belief propagation (NBP) decoding. By introducing weights sharing mechanism, the weights vary across different iterations. The number of parameters is reduced, which significantly lowers memory requirements. In addition, we optimize the loss function to better train the model, achieving a lower bit error rate (BER) performance. Experimental results show that the proposed decoder yields significant performance improvements with respect to NBP, and significantly reducing the number of learnable weights.

A novel Neural Offset Min-Sum(NOMS) Belief Propagation(BP) decoding algorithm based on model-driven is proposed which applied to LDPC decoding. NOMS is improved multiplication in Neural Normalized Min-Sum(NNMS) into addition operation to reduce the complexity of calculation., a better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance is simultaneously achieved in the same condition. Secondly, considering that there are still many multiplication operations in NOMS, we propose a novel Shared Offset Min-Sum(SNOMS) to reduce the number of weights in the network by sharing parameters. Finally, codebook-based quantization is used to further reduce the memory consumption. Simulation experimental results show that the proposed method has a better BER performance, and the decoding accuracy of the decoder is 0.65dB higher than that of the NNMS after 5 iterations. In addition, SNOMS decoding method achieves almost the same decoding performance comparable to that of NOMS, but requires less complex calculation. Proposed quantization of code-book method reduces memory requirement significantly with slight performance loss.

Learned Decimation for Neural Belief Propagation Decoders

Andreas Buchberger, Christian Häger, Henry D. Pfister +2 more

We introduce a two-stage decimation process to improve the performance of neural belief propagation (NBP), recently introduced by Nachmani et al., for short low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In the first stage, we build a list by iterating between a conventional NBP decoder and guessing the least reliable bit. The second stage iterates between a conventional NBP decoder and learned decimation, where we use a neural network to decide the decimation value for each bit. For a (128,64) LDPC code, the proposed NBP with decimation outperforms NBP decoding by 0.75 dB and performs within 1 dB from maximum-likelihood decoding at a block error rate of $10^{-4}$.

A Model-Driven Quasi-ResNet Belief Propagation Neural Network Decoder for LDPC Codes

Liangsi Ma, Bei Liu, Xin Su +1 more

For the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, existing deep learning methods have a limited performance improvement and it is difficult to train deep-level networks. In this paper, a model-driven quasi-residual network (Quasi-ResNet) BP decoding architecture is proposed for LDPC codes to further improve the performance of standard BP decoding. This method feeds the reliable messages calculated in current iteration into the next iteration based on the shortcut connection, and adjusts the weight of shortcut connection based on the error Back Propagation algorithm of neural network to determine the optimal genetic proportion of reliable messages. The decoding architecture is composed of a model-driven deep neural network (DNN) and shortcut connection. Simulation results show that the decoder can not only unfold more layers quickly compared with the DNN-based BP decoder, but also further improve the decoding performance.

Low-Complexity Neural Belief Propagation Decoding Algorithm Based on Tensor Ring Decomposition

Yuanhui Liang, Chan–Tong Lam, Qingle Wu +2 more

Neural belief propagation (NBP) decoding can improve the performance of belief propagation (BP) decoding for high-density parity check (HDPC) codes, at the expense of higher memory storage requirement and computational complexity due to the addition of trainable weight coefficients. To reduce the high storage requirement of NBP, the cyclically equivariant neural BP (CENBP) algorithm makes full use of the cyclically invariant property of the cyclic code, optimizes and reuses the weight coefficients of the NBP algorithm, at the expense of further increasing the computational complexity of NBP. In this paper, we propose low-complexity, in terms of both memory storage requirement and computational complexity, NBP and CENBP decoding algorithms based on Tensor Ring (TR) decomposition. First, in order to reduce the memory storage and computational complexity of the NBP algorithm, we propose a TR-based compression algorithm to compress the messages and mathematical calculations in the NBP decoding algorithm, called TR-NBP algorithm. Second, to address the high computational complexity of the CENBP algorithm, we propose to apply TR decomposition-based compression to the odd layers of the CENBP decoding algorithm, called TR-CENBP, to reduce the computational complexity, and further reduce the required memory storage requirement of the CENBP algorithm. Furthermore, we use TR decomposition-based compression to simplify the mathematical computations associated with thetanhfunction in the NBP algorithm to further reduce the complexity of the hardware implementation. Experimental results show that direct compression of BP algorithm using TR decomposition results in significant performance degradation and our proposed low complexity TR-NBP algorithm and TR-CENBP algorithm can greatly reduce both the memory storage requirement and computation complexity, without significant performance degradation for typical BCH and LDPC codes.

Low Complexity Neural Network-Aided NMS LDPC Decoder

Honghao Shi, Mingyang Zhong, Zhiyong Luo +1 more

For recent years, deep learning has been studied and utilized among decoders in wireless and optical communication. For low density parity check (LDPC) codes, most works use neural network (NN) to implement the belief propagation (BP) decoder and unfold its iterations into layers activated by different functions. However, the whole decoder composed by neural network performs lots of non-linear operations, which are time consuming and unfriendly to hardware implementation. In this work, a neural network-aided normalized min-sum (NN-aided NMS) decoder for LDPC code is proposed, in which the normalization factors are inferred from input log likelihood ratio (LLR) by apre-trained NN, while maintaining check and variable nodes processing the same as in min-sum (MS) decoder. In order to test the proposed decoder with irregular LDPC code, a rate-7/8 one was constructed using progressive edge growth (PEG) algorithm, showing better error correction capability than the standard of consultative committee for space data systems (CCSDS) LDPC (8176,7154) code by 0.08 dB with the same rate. Simulation results show that, NN-aided NMS decoder outperforms MS decoder by 0.3 dB, and its performance approaches BP decoder with a gap of 0.02 dB, which is 50% closer than the best NMS decoder using 0.7 as the normalization factor. The proposed decoder has good performance for both regular and irregular LDPC codes, and needs much less computation complexity than BP decoder. It introduces more linear computation than NMS decoder but achieves better bit error rate (BER) performance, thus becoming a good complement between BP and NMS decoder when trading off among complexity, error correction performance and hardware implementation for wireless and satellite communication.
