Exploring the role of polarization in fiber-based quantum sources

Abstract

Optical fibers constitute an attractive platform for the realization of nonlinear and quantum optics processes. Here, we show, through theoretical considerations, how polarization effects of both third-order parametric down-conversion and four-wave-mixing in optical fibers may be exploited to enhance detection schemes. We apply our general framework specifically to the case of tapered fibers for photon triplet generation, a long-standing goal within quantum optics, and obtain explicit expectation values for its efficiency. A quantitative investigation of four-wave-mixing in a microstructured solid-core fiber provides significant consequences for the role of polarization in experimental design.

Third-order parametric down-conversion in tapered optical fibers: an exact theoretical treatment of conversion efficiency

Carla M. Brunner, Maria V. Chekhova, Nicolas Y. Joly

Sub-micron tapered fibers have been proposed to be a suitable platform for the implementation of third-order spontaneous parametric down conversion (TOSPDC). Starting with the derivation of expressions for quantized fields in optical fibers, we devise an exact theoretical treatment of the expected triplet generation rate.

Quantum light sources based on third-order nonlinear waveguides

Wei Zhang, Qiang Zhou, Yidong Huang +1 more

This paper introduces our recent works on quantum light sources based on third-order nonlinear waveguides. Based on the spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) effect in optical fibers, we realized high quality correlated photon pair generation. A fiber based heralded single photon source (HSPS) with a preparation efficiency of ~80% under a g2(0) of 0.06 was realized based on it. On the other hand, we demonstrated that the vector scattering processes of the SFWM can be suppressed effectively by the polarization walk off effect in the polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs), by which polarization entangled photon pair generation was realized in a piece of PMF experimentally. We also realized correlated photon pair generation in silicon wire waveguides fabricated by ourselves, demonstrating its low noise performance. These works shows that SFWM in third-order nonlinear waveguides provides a promising way to realize practical quantum light sources compatible with today’s engineering technologies.

Spontaneous parametric processes in optical fibers: a comparison

Karina Garay-Palmett, María Corona, Alfred B. U’Ren

We study the processes of spontaneous four wave mixing and of third-order spontaneous parametric downconversion in optical fibers, as the basis for the implementation of photon-pair and photon-triplet sources. We present a comparative analysis of the two processes including expressions for the respective quantum states and plots of the joint spectral intensity, a discussion of phasematching characteristics, and expressions for the conversion efficiency. We have also included a comparative study based on numerical results for the conversion efficiency for the two sources, as a function of several key experimental parameters.

Experimental proposal for the generation of entangled photon triplets by third-order spontaneous parametric downconversion in optical fibers

María Corona, Karina Garay-Palmett, Alfred B. U’Ren

We present an experimental proposal for the generation of photon triplets based on third-order spontaneous parametric downconversion in thin optical fibers. Our analysis includes expressions for the quantum state, which describes the photon triplets and for the generation rate in terms of all experimental parameters. We also present, for a specific source design, numerically calculated generation rates.

From Third Harmonic to Triplet Generation in Microstructured Fibers

Nicolas Y. Joly, Jonas Hammer, Riccardo Pennetta +4 more

Direct observation of third-order spontaneous down conversion, where three low energy photons are generated from a single one, remains a challenging task. We report here on different strategies based on engineered optical fibers. These include gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers, hybrid- and tapered fibers.
