Einstein's Photoelectric Effect Does Not Prove Duality: Discrete Detection Does Not Imply Discrete Existence

Lim Kheng Cheong, Larry

Description “Discrete detection does not imply discrete existence.” For over a century, the photoelectric effect has been cited as the decisive experimental result that forced physics to abandon wave-only models of light and accept wave–particle duality. Einstein’s 1905 interpretation argued that because electrons are ejected instantaneously and in discrete events, light itself must consist of discrete particles. This paper shows that this conclusion is not logically required. We present a reinterpretation of the photoelectric effect based on the Total Wave Modified Schrödinger Equation (TWMSE), a deterministic wave-interference framework with threshold-based collapse. Within this model, the observed discreteness arises from the detection process, not from the ontology of light itself. Key Findings The “Photon” Is an Event, Not an ObjectThe photon is shown to be a retrospective label applied to a discrete wave-collapse event. The event is discrete; the source field (light) remains continuous and wave-like. Threshold-Based Collapse Explains EmissionElectron emission occurs when the curvature density of the interfering electromagnetic wave field exceeds a material-specific stability threshold. Below this threshold, no emission occurs regardless of intensity. Resolution of Classical ParadoxesThe model reproduces all defining features of the photoelectric effect—instantaneous emission, threshold frequency, and the linear dependence of electron kinetic energy on frequency—without invoking particle ontology. Mathematical Equivalence Without Particle AssumptionsA direct mapping is provided showing that the TWMSE collapse formulation reproduces Einstein’s photoelectric equation purely through wave curvature dynamics. Why This Matters By resolving the photoelectric effect entirely within a deterministic wave framework, this work removes the primary historical justification for wave–particle duality. It clarifies that discrete experimental outcomes do not require discrete underlying entities and supports a unified field interpretation of quantum measurement consistent with prior TWMSE results in electromagnetism, gravity, and macroscopic systems. A Derivation-Gated Roman Space Telescope Programme for Testing History-Dependent Collapse in TWMSE

Larry Lim Kheng Cheong

This paper presents a derivation-gated research programme for using the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to test a possible cosmological consequence of the Total Wave Modified Schrödinger Equation (TWMSE). TWMSE is a proposed deterministic collapse framework in which system and observer fields interfere and collapse depends on a cumulative threshold condition. The revised unified TWMSE account establishes an important limitation: because the canonical scalar term C(t)I commutes with every Hamiltonian, it contributes only a common scalar factor and is empirically indistinguishable from standard quantum mechanics after physical normalisation. A cosmological bridge based solely on that scalar form therefore predicts α = 0. Any admissible cosmological completion must instead derive a branch-sensitive operator structure and map it quantitatively to a Roman observable before confirmatory data are examined. The programme is organised around one primary matched-history or path-degeneracy test. Populations would be balanced in present-state variables and in all conventionally relevant formation and line-of-sight histories, but separated by a pre-derived TWMSE coupling-history functional. Six supporting analyses—history-conditioned weak lensing, structure-growth residuals, accumulated environment, threshold behaviour, redshift scaling and cross-observable consistency—are treated as corroborating or falsifying views of the same mechanism rather than independent opportunities for anomaly discovery. The paper specifies the required derivation gate, standard-model controls, nuisance treatment, negative tests, blinding, preregistration, minimum detectable effect and interpretation rules. It does not claim that Roman has detected TWMSE or that a cosmological residual would establish a Theory of Everything. Without a dimensionally consistent bridge that fixes the predicted sign, magnitude, scaling and test domain in advance, Roman observations can motivate phenomenology but cannot test TWMSE specifically.

Beyond Exponential Decay: Interpreting Quantum Tunneling as Wave Stress Accumulation in the Total Wave Modified Schrodinger Equation (TWMSE)

Larry Lim Kheng Cheong

This paper presents an interpretive extension of standard quantum mechanics using the Total Wave Modified Schrödinger Equation (TWMSE), reframing quantum tunneling as a dynamic process of wave interference and stress accumulation rather than a purely probabilistic event. In standard quantum mechanics, tunneling is described by exponentially decaying wavefunctions inside classically forbidden regions, often interpreted as the wave “dying out.” This work argues instead that exponential decay represents blocked propagation and stored evanescent wave deformation. Within the TWMSE framework, continuous wave incidence leads to gradual, logarithmic accumulation of interference (or “wave stress”) until a stability threshold is reached, triggering tunneling or collapse. The paper emphasizes complementarity rather than replacement: standard quantum mechanics correctly describes the spatial shape of the wave, while TWMSE provides a physical narrative for its time-dependent behavior. Analogies such as stiff springs, capacitors, and voltage drops are used to make the interpretation accessible without altering established mathematics. Appendices clarify that the TWMSE interpretation is not a hidden-variable or Bohmian theory, connect the narrative to the formal TWMSE collapse–interference functional, and explore the speculative but testable idea that tunneling rates may be tunable through resonant observer–wave coupling. This contribution is intended as a conceptual and pedagogical bridge between standard quantum tunneling theory and wave-based collapse dynamics, and as a foundation for future quantitative and experimental investigations.
