Abstract

Biphoton Waveforms In article number 2400147, Han Seb Moon and co-workers demonstrate high-performance telecom-wavelength biphoton generation using a hot 87Rb vapor cell. This study unveils, for the first time, a beat phenomenon in the signal photon’s auto-correlation function, arising from velocity-selective atomic classes in warm vapor. These findings advance practical telecom-band quantum light sources, offering new insights for quantum technologies.

Biphoton Waveforms of Photon Pair from Velocity‐Selective Atoms in a Doppler‐Broadened Atomic Ensemble

Hansol Jeong, Heewoo Kim, Danbi Kim +1 more

Telecom band photonic quantum states generated from atomic systems are critical quantum resources for long‐distance and scalable quantum communication networks. Here, the beat phenomenon in the autocorrelation function of the telecom‐wavelength photon due to the velocity‐selective classes of the atoms in a Doppler‐broadened atomic ensemble of the cascade‐type 5S1/2–5P3/2–4D5/2 transition of 87Rb is reported. Although the signal (1529 nm) and idler (780 nm) photons are emitted from a single‐atomic ensemble, the autocorrelation functions of the signal and idler photons exhibit significantly different features, with temporal widths of 7 and 0.13 ns, respectively. Furthermore, the biphoton spectral waveform of the telecom band photon pair is measured using a stimulated emission method. The biphoton waveforms of the telecom‐wavelength biphoton source demonstrate good agreement with the magnitude of the Fourier components of the measured biphoton temporal and spectral waveforms.

High‐Performance Telecom‐Wavelength Biphoton Source from a Hot Atomic Vapor Cell

Hansol Jeong, Heewoo Kim, Han Seb Moon

Abstract Telecom‐band quantum light sources are critical to the development of long‐distance quantum communication technologies. A high‐performance telecom‐wavelength biphoton source from a hot 87 Rb atomic vapor cell is reported. Time‐correlated biphotons are generated from the cascade‐type 5S 1/2 –5P 3/2 –4D 5/2 transition of 87 Rb via a spontaneous four‐wave mixing process. The maximum value of biphoton cross‐correlation to be 44(3) is achieved, under the condition of a high optical depth of 112(3), including two‐photon absorption, with a spectral width of approximately 300 MHz. The coincidence count rate of biphoton is estimated to be of the order of 38 000 cps mW −1 . It is believed that the telecom‐wavelength biphoton source from an atomic vapor cell can be applied in long‐distance quantum networks and practical quantum repeaters based on atom–photon interactions.

Collective biphoton temporal waveform of photon-pair generated from Doppler-broadened atomic ensemble

Heewoo Kim, Hansol Jeong, Han Seb Moon

Abstract Photonic quantum states generated from atomic ensembles will play important roles in future quantum networks and long-distance quantum communication because their advantages, such as universal identity and narrow spectral bandwidth, are essential for quantum nodes and quantum repeaters based on atomic ensembles. In this study, we report the collectively coherent superposition of biphoton wavefunction emitted from different velocity classes in a Doppler-broadened cascade-type atomic ensemble. We experimentally demonstrate that the three times difference of temporal width of both biphoton temporal waveforms varies dependent on the wavelengths of the signal and idler photons from both 6S1/2–6P3/2–6D5/2 and –8S1/2 transitions of 133Cs, corresponding to the idler and signal wavelengths of 852 nm–917 nm and 852 nm–795 nm, respectively. Our results help understand the characteristics of biphoton sources from a warm atomic ensemble and can be applied to long-distance quantum networks and practical quantum repeaters based on atom–photon interactions.

Highly Efficient Biphoton Generation In article number 2400214, Han Seb Moon, Heewoo Kim, and Hansol Jeong present a highly efficient biphoton source using a thin and dense atomic medium from a hot 1 mm-long Cs atomic vapor cell, which paves the way for scalable quantum networks. Demonstrating the viability of such atomic sources at the millimeter scale marks a significant milestone, driving the miniaturization of quantum technologies and advancing light-matter interfaces.

Temporal- and spectral-property measurements of narrowband photon pairs from warm double-Λ-type atomic ensemble

Taek Jeong, Han Seb Moon

We investigate the temporal and spectral properties of narrowband photon pairs from a double-Λ-type atomic system of a warm 87Rb atomic ensemble. The temporal properties of the narrowband photons are investigated by measuring their auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions. The spectral measurement of the photon pair is obtained by applying the stimulated emission method. We show that the biphoton spectral waveform with a spectral width of ∼6 MHz corresponds to the biphoton temporal waveform with a temporal width of ∼26 ns. We believe that our results can contribute to the characterization of narrowband photons generated from atomic ensembles and aid in the development of new photonic quantum states generated from atomic systems.

Generation of subnatural-linewidth biphotons from a hot rubidium atomic vapor cell

Yanhong Xiao, Chi Shu, Lingbang Zhu +4 more

We report the generation of narrowband entangled photon pairs (biphotons) from a hot atomic vapor cell. Making use of backward spontaneous four-wave mixing with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), we produced subnatural-linewidth (1.9 MHz < 6 MHz) biphotons from a Doppler-broadened (0.5 GHz) hot (63 C) paraffin-coated rubidium 87 vapor cell. The biphoton coherence time is controable and can be tuned up to 100 ns by EIT. The uncorrelated photons from resonance Raman scattering are suppressed by a spatially separated and tailored optical pumping beam. The spectral brightness is as high as 14,000 s−1MHz−1. As compared with the cold-atom experiment , the hot atomic vapour cell configuration is much simpler for operation and maintenance, and it is a continuous biphoton source. Our demonstration may lead to miniature narrowband biphoton sources based on atomic vapour cells for practical quantum applications and engineering.
