Investment Trends in Quantum Computing

Loïc Maréchal

Abstract This chapter explores the ongoing substantial financial investments required for developing and commercializing quantum computing technology. Given the field’s high uncertainty and long-term potential, investments are crucial for advancing breakthroughs in cryptography, materials science, and complex system simulations. The chapter examines the rise of quantum computing funding from the private equity and venture capital standpoints, highlighting key players like IBM and Google and emerging firms such as Rigetti and IonQ. It provides a detailed analysis of private funding trends, valuations, and geographic distribution, underscoring the sector’s growth despite market volatility and regional concentration challenges. It also focuses on the discrepancies in funding allocation and performance among startups and the significant role of established companies like Microsoft, Google, and IBM in shaping the industry. Looking ahead, the chapter emphasizes the need for innovative financial models to assess investment returns, considering the nascent nature of quantum technology and the scarcity of financial data from private firms.

Volume VII: Private Equity Strategies in the Quantum Domain -Investment Thesis, Areas of Interest, and Financing Horizons (2026-2031)

Syed Muntasir Mamun

K SC As the second quantum revolution transitions from laboratory demonstration to early commercial and strategic deployment, private equity (PE) firms are recalibrating their investment theses. Drawing on the technical foundations (Volumes I and V), ontological shifts (Volume II), governance frameworks (Volumes III and V), multipolar trajectories, and Base-ofthe-Pyramid survival imperatives (Volume VI), this seventh volume analyses the emerging strategies of private equity in the quantum domain. It identifies the specific areas attracting capital, the risk-mitigation approaches being adopted, and the evolving nature of financing across two critical time horizons: the next 18–36 months (2026–2028) and the subsequent period through 2031. The analysis concludes that while pure-play quantum computing remains high-risk, the most attractive opportunities lie in quantum-AI convergence platforms, postquantum cryptography migration, quantum sensing applications, and enabling infrastructure. Financing is expected to shift from predominantly venture and growth equity toward larger, more structured vehicles including dedicated quantum infrastructure funds and strategic coinvestments with sovereign and corporate actors.
