Abstract

We investigate a quantum electrodynamics system consisting of two coupled single-mode cavities. The left cavity couples with a two-level atom, while the right cavity incorporates a second-order nonlinear medium, activated by a pumping field. In the absence of nonlinear medium, we show that the transmitted field intensity reveals only classical asymmetric behavior at the central frequency. However, the parametric interaction induced by the nonlinear medium leads to various quantum asymmetric behaviors at single photon excitation frequencies, including the squeezing, quantum statistics, and phase-space characteristics of the transmitted photons. These asymmetric behaviors arise from additional excitation pathways enabled by the parametric interaction-induced two-photon processes. We demonstrate these asymmetric behaviors through Klyshko’s figures of merit, the Wigner function, and the steady-state second-order correlation function of the transmitted photons. These results present promising applications for remote quantum-state manipulation and contribute significantly to the advancement of quantum networking.

Research of radiation characteristics in a parametrically driven cavity

Xue SHANG, Binfang Cao, Guo Miaodi +2 more

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) serves as a fundamental platform for studying light-matter interactions at a single-particle level and has been extensively investigated in fundamental physics and quantum information. Recent development of parametrically squeezed techniques has demonstrated that they have the remarkable ability to exponentially enhance coherent atom-cavity coupling. However, the full extent to which these techniques can manipulate quantum optical phenomena requires further exploration. This work systematically investigates the influence of optical parametric amplification on single-photon excited atom-cavity systems within a parametrically driven cavity. In the proposed model, optical parametric amplification converts the driving photons into a squeezed cavity mode, which enhances the atom-cavity interaction into the strong coupling region. Through analytical derivation of atomic and cavity radiation spectra, we demonstrate that the optical parametric amplification induces splitting of atomic radiation spectra while exerting negligible effects on spectral intensity. Conversely, the cavity transmission spectrum exhibits both pronounced splitting and nonlinear intensity amplification. Notably, as driving field intensity approaches a critical intensity regime, the cavity radiation spectrum intensity is significantly enhanced. The underlying mechanism is parametric driving amplification, which converts the driving light into a squeezed cavity mode. When this squeezed mode is mapped back to the fundamental mode of the cavity through Bogoliubov squeezing transformation, the pump photons within the squeezed cavity mode are converted into the photons that contribute to the radiation spectrum of the cavity, thereby amplifying its intensity. This parametric enhancement method not only deepens the basic understanding of light-matter interactions, but also establishes a practical framework for improving the single-photon detection sensitivity in cavity-based quantum systems. These findings have broad prospects for quantum sensing and information processing applications.

Chaotic dynamics for a system of two-level atoms interacting with photons

Alexander V. Gorokhov, E. V. Rogacheva, V. V. Ruchkov

Some quantum optical models possessing a transition from regular to chaotic dynamics and influence of 'quantum chaos' to photons statistics are investigated. Particular cases of semiclassical dynamics of a single atom and cooperative system of these atoms with (2j + 1) -- equidistant levels interacting with a quantized photon mode in an ideal cavity were considered. We take into account parametric pumping. Corresponding equations of motion are received without the rotation-wave approximation. It was demonstrated the scenario of transition to chaos, realized by doubling frequencies mechanism with growing of 'atom + field' coupling constant. Chaotic behavior and squeezing degree time dependence were obtained in computer simulations for coupling constant values of order of the atomic frequency, the calculation of the maximal Lyapunov coefficient for the dynamics of many two- level atoms interacting with photon cavity mode as function of 'atoms + field' interaction constant is performed. An influence of possible parametric instabilities of nonlinear media and effects of dissipation for atoms are discussed.

Nonreciprocal photon blockade induced by parametric amplification in an asymmetrical cavity

Shao-xiong Wu, Xue-Chen Gao, Huanhuan Cheng +1 more

We propose a scheme to generate and manipulate nonreciprocal photon blockade effect in an asymmetrical Fabry-P\'erot cavity, which consists of a single two-level atom and a second-order nonlinear medium. By utilizing the intrinsic spatial asymmetry of cavity and applying a parametric amplification pumping laser to the nonlinear medium, we can realize direction-dependent single-photon and two-photon blockade effects. For nonreciprocal single-photon blockade, our proposal is robust across a wide range of parameters, such as the cavity or atomic detuning, coupling strength, and atomic decay. Within similar parameter ranges, nonreciprocal two-photon blockade can be achieved and modulated by finely adjusting the parametric amplification pumping. Our project offers a feasible access to generating high-quality and tunable nonreciprocal single- or two-photon sources and paves a new avenue for investigating the nonreciprocity of photon quantum statistical properties.

Single-atom cavity-enhanced absorption. I. Photon statistics in the bad-cavity limit

Perry R. Rice, H. J. Carmichael

The photon statistics of the transmitted light from a driven cavity containing a single resonant two-level atom are studied in the bad-cavity limit. For weak driving fields, the second-order intensity correlation function shows novel nonclassical behavior due to the interference of the driving field and forward reradiation from the atom. This behavior is related to squeezing in the cavity transmission. A physical interpretation is given in terms of the reduced quantum state of the coupled atom-field system following photodetection.>

Conditioned homodyne detection at the single-photon level: Intensity-field correlations for a two-level atom in an optical parametric oscillator

C. Elliot Strimbu, Joseph Leach, Perry R. Rice

We consider intensity-field correlation functions for a two-level atom in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which would result from a conditioned homodyne measurement. Analytic results are obtained in the limit of weak driving fields using quantum trajectory methods for both the transmitted and fluorescent fields. This system is unique in that after detection of a photon, it is known that one excitation is in the system, in either the atom or cavity mode. We find large violations of inequalities satisfied by classical fields, for both transmitted and fluorescent fields. This is in contrast to the usual cavity QED system of an atom in a driven cavity where we do not find nonclassical behavior in the intensity-field correlation function in fluorescence. This is understood in terms of a relationship between the intensity-field correlation function and the second-order intensity correlation function, as well as the different amount of field-atom entanglement in the two systems. We show that for weak-field cavity QED one must have photon bunching to have nonclassical behavior in the intensity-field correlation function. We compare our results to those of an ordinary OPO. Finally, we also consider cross correlations, where we examine the transmitted (fluorescent) field conditioned by detection of a fluorescent (transmitted) photon.

Dynamics of atom-field interaction inside a nonlinear Kerr-like medium filled optical cavity

Naveen Kumar, Arpita Chatterjee

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of two two-level atoms interacting with a two-mode field inside an optical cavity, in presence of a nonlinear Kerr-like medium as well as the Stark shift. We derive the exact analytical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation that provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing the system's quantum properties. To characterize the nonclassical features of the radiation field, we examine photon number distribution, second-order correlation function 𝑔2⁡(0), squeezing properties, and Mandel's 𝑄𝑀 parameter. These properties reveal significant insights into the quantum statistical behaviour of the field and its deviation from classicality under different interaction regimes. In addition, we quantify the atom-atom entanglement using linear entropy which captures the mixedness of the atomic subsystem and elucidates the interplay between atom-atom interactions. The results highlight the crucial role of nonlinear interactions and the Stark shift in shaping the quantum correlations and nonclassical phenomena of the system.
