Abstract

We successfully integrated an automated system for distributing entangled photons across a 30-km field-deployed fiber in Berlin. Over a 17-day continuous operation, it achieved >99% fidelity, underscoring its potential for scalable, city-wide quantum net-works.

Automated Distribution of Polarization-Entangled Photons Using Deployed New York City Fibers

Alexander N. Craddock, Anne Lazenby, Gabriel Bello Portmann +3 more

The distribution of high-fidelity high-rate entanglement over telecommunication infrastructure is one of the main paths toward large-scale quantum networks, enabling applications such as quantum encryption and network protection, blind quantum computing, distributed quantum computing, and distributed quantum sensing. However, the fragile nature of entangled photons operating in real-world fiber infrastructure has historically limited continuous operation of such networks. Here, we present a fully automated system capable of distributing polarization-entangled photons over a 34-km deployed fiber in New York City, achieving high rates of nearly 5 × 10 5 pairs/s. Separately, we demonstrate a high fidelity of approximately 99 % for rates up to 2 × 10 4 pairs/s. Lastly, we achieve 15 days of continuous distribution, with a network up-time of 99.84 % . Our work paves the way for practical deployment of always-on entanglement-based networks with rates and fidelity adequate for many current and future use cases. Towards the Quantum Internet: Prospects and Challenges of Efficient Entanglement Distribution Over Telecom Fibers

Matheus Ribeiro Sena, Mael Flament, Mehdi Namazi +9 more

Network operators hold a significant asset in their widespread optical fiber networks and as quantum technologies advance, these operators will be ideally positioned to offer new streams of services in the context of the Quantum Internet. However, establishing a functional Quantum Internet requires diverse technological advancements, particularly in the efficient distribution of entanglement over optical fibers. Entanglement serves as the cornerstone for quantum protocols and technologies such as quantum repeaters, teleportation, sensing, and time synchronization. Nonetheless, as photons propagate through fiber, they encounter various impairments that can degrade entanglement quality. Specifically, polarization-entangled photons suffer from polarization drifts, which exhibit stochastic behavior and can reduce fidelity. In this paper, we examine the prospects of entanglement distribution for the Quantum Internet, presenting experimental campaigns that highlight both the challenges and solutions. We demonstrate the inherent instability of photon fidelity in field-deployed fibers and show how compensation schemes can effectively enhance entanglement transmission in urban fiber networks. Our findings include results from a four-day entanglement distribution experiment conducted over Deutsche Telekom's optical fiber network in Berlin, achieving an average Bell parameter and fidelity of 2.52 and 99.6%, respectively.
