Abstract

We have successfully implemented 125 km quantum-classical co-transmission using few-mode fiber by optimizing system configurations and isolation, achieving 2.1% quantum bit-error-rate and 100 Gbit/s classical transmission with 16 dBm launch power.

Coexistence of quantum key distribution and optical transport network based on standard single-mode fiber at high launch power

Jiaqi Geng, Guan‐Jie Fan‐Yuan, Shuang Wang +7 more

There is an increasing demand for multiplexing of quantum key distribution with optical communications in single fiber in consideration of high costs and practical applications in the metropolitan optical network. Here, we realize the integration of quantum key distribution and an optical transport network of 80 Gbps classical data at 15 dBm launch power over 50 km of the widely used standard (G.652 Recommendation of the International Telecom Union Telecom Standardization Sector) telecom fiber. A secure key rate of 11 Kbps over 20 km is obtained. By tolerating a high classical optical power up to 18 dBm of 160 Gbps classical data on single-mode fiber, our result shows the potential and tolerance of quantum key distribution being used in future large capacity transmission systems, such as metropolitan area networks and data centers. The quantum key distribution system is stable, practical, and insensitive to the polarization disturbance of channels by using a phase coding system based on a Faraday-Michelson interferometer. We also discuss the fundamental limit for quantum key distribution performance in the multiplexing environment.

The limits of multiplexing quantum and classical channels: Case study of a 2.5 GHz discrete variable quantum key distribution system

Fadri Grünenfelder, Rebecka Sax, Alberto Boaron +1 more

Network integration of quantum key distribution is crucial for its future widespread deployment due to the high cost of using optical fibers dedicated for the quantum channel only. We studied the performance of a system running a simplified BB84 protocol at 2.5 GHz repetition rate, operating in the original wavelength band, the short O-band, when multiplexed with communication channels in the conventional wavelength band, and the short C-band. Our system could successfully generate secret keys over a single-mode fiber with a length of 95.5 km and with co-propagating classical signals at a launch power of 8.9 dBm. Furthermore, we discuss the performance of an ideal system under the same conditions, showing the limits of what is possible with a discrete variable system in the O-band. We also considered a short and lossy link with 51 km optical fiber resembling a real link in a metropolitan area network. In this scenario, we could exchange a secret key with a launch power up to 16.7 dBm in the classical channels.

Coexistence of 1 Tbps classical optical communication and quantum key distribution over a 100.96 km few-mode fiber

Tianqi Dou, Song Gao, Chengliang Zhang +8 more

The integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) and classical optical communication has attracted widespread attention. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a real-time co-propagation of 1 Tbps for 10 classical channels with one discrete-variable QKD channel in the weakly coupled few-mode fiber (FMF). Based on the selection of optimal device parameters and wavelength assignment of classical channels, as well as the optimization of equipment performance, a secure key rate of as high as 2.7 kbps of coexistence transmission of QKD and classical optical communication can be achieved using a 100.96 km weakly coupled FMF. Therefore, this study is a step toward realizing long-distance quantum-classical coexistence transmission.
