The Magnetic Monopole and the Aharonov-Bohm Effect

Abstract

A very interesting comment by Nobel laureate Gerard‘t Hooft is the “discovery that unifying the forces of physics requires the existence of magnetic monopoles”. We examine this proposal through the prism of the Aharonov–Bohm effect.

Dual scalar Aharonov Bohm phase

Hasan Özgür Çıldıroğlu, A. U. Yilmazer

On the 60th anniversary year of Aharonov-Bohm’s seminal discovery, the past and ongoing theoretical and experimental studies firmly illustrated the profound importance of their topological phase for almost all branches of the physics. In this short study, it is aimed to examine the AB type effects from a holistic perspective and derive the dual of the scalar AB effect for a magnetic monopole passing through a cylindrical magnetic conductor.

Reality and significance of the Aharonov-Bohm effect

Daniel M. Greenberger

Because the Aharonov-Bohm effect has been challenged on mathematical grounds we give a simple physical proof of its existence, which also gives an insight into why such a strange effect must exist within quantum theory. We also comment on some of the recent literature on the subject.

On the paper 'Role of potentials in the Aharonov-Bohm effect'

Alexander Stewart

When the magnetic vector potential is expressed in terms of the magnetic field it, is found to be explicitly non-local in space. This gives support to the conclusions of Aharonov et al. in a recent comment, that the Aharonov-Bohm effect may be interpreted as being either due to a local gauge potential or else due to non-local gauge-invariant fields but not due to local gauge-invariant fields.

A critical re-examination of the Aharonov–Bohm effect

Dipankar Home, S. Sengupta

The controversy concerning theoretical treatment of the Aharonov–Bohm (AB) effect is critically investigated. A new approach, taking the time-dependent aspect of this effect into consideration, is proposed which seeks to resolve the prevalent ambiguities. This provides interesting insight into the origin of the AB effect. Some clarifications are also made regarding the experimental verification of this effect.
