Using Quantum Computers and Simulators in the Life Sciences: Current Trends and Future Prospects

Salil Gunashekar, Isabel Flanagan, Camilla d'Angelo +4 more

We analysed the global research landscape associated with the application of quantum technologies to the life sciences, focussing on quantum computers and simulators. We highlighted current developments and trends, opportunities and challenges, and initiatives and activities to help enable the ecosystem in the future. We carried out the research using a detailed literature review, stakeholder interviews and a comprehensive scientometric analysis.

A Scientometric Review of Practical Applications in Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP): Trends, Gaps, and Research Opportunities

Valmiro Ribeiro da Silva, Fábio Rocha Barbosa, Jasson Carvalho da Silva +3 more

Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) is an emerging interdisciplinary field that connects quantum computing and natural language processing (NLP), with the goal of improving language models through quantum algorithms. Although the field has gained increasing attention, research in QNLP remains fragmented, with limited studies mapping its evolution or practical implementations. This article presents a comprehensive scientometric analysis of QNLP research, revealing its conceptual foundations, research dynamics, and emerging directions. Using bibliographic data from the Scopus (2014-2024) and Web of Science (2014-2024) databases and analytical tools such as VOSviewer and Biblioshiny, we examined 116 publications following the PRISMA guidelines. The analysis covers publication growth, author productivity, leading journals, influential countries, and keyword trends. Network visualizations highlight the intellectual structure of the field, co-authorship patterns, and thematic clusters. The results indicate a sharp increase in QNLP studies since 2021, driven by advances in quantum hardware, frameworks such aslambeq, and growing interdisciplinary collaborations. However, during the literature mapping, we identified a significant gap regarding the applications of QNLP in various specific domains such as healthcare field. This study offers a quantitative mapping of the QNLP landscape, providing a structured overview of its development and outlining promising avenues for future exploration.

Quantum and Artificial Intelligence:: Exploring Their Convergence Through Scientometrics

Carlos Alberto Oviedo Machado, Luiyi David Brito Palmezano, William Alcides Trillos Sarmiento +1 more

Technological and scientific advancements in recent years have enabled us to manipulate technologies that were once considered unimaginable. Among these, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and quantum physics have emerged as pivotal forces, significantly enhancing our capacity to achieve goals and solve complex problems. Given their growing relevance, a comprehensive review of the scientific output underpinning this new era is both timely and necessary. Such a review allows us to trace the increasing scholarly interest in these domains and to identify emerging trends in the synergy between them. Accordingly, the objective of this article is to present a scientometric analysis of the academic literature related to both AI and quantum science. To achieve this, we examined peerreviewed articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, focusing on key indicators such as publication volume, citation patterns, and collaboration networks among countries, journals, and authors. The findings reveal a notable increase in interest toward the integration of AI and quantum technologies in recent years, driven by their combined potential to deliver enhanced performance across a wide range of disciplines.
