Abstract

In this publication we summarise our journey when deploying Malta's first Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) network. The challenges faced in this project and the means used to overcome them are discussed, paving the way for smoother deployments in the future. We also summarise the tools we have built along the way that were essential to manage and monitor such a network, along with the work we have been doing in standardisation bodies and research on the topic.

Towards Global Quantum Key Distribution

Haoran Zhang, Haotao Zhu, Ruihua He +4 more

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) supports the negotiation and sharing of private keys with unconditional security between authorized parties. Over the years, theoretical advances and experimental demonstrations have successfully transitioned QKD from laboratory research to commercial applications. As QKD expands its reach globally, it encounters challenges such as performance limitations, cost, and practical security concerns. Nonetheless, innovations in satellite-based QKD and the development of new protocols are paving the way towards a worldwide network. In this review, we provide an overview of QKD implementations, with a focus on protocols, devices, and quantum channels. We discuss the challenges of practical QKD and explore long-haul QKD. Additionally, we highlight the future research directions that are expected to significantly advance the realization of a global QKD network.

Recent Progress in Quantum Key Distribution Network Deployments and Standards

Manoj Stanley, Yunsong Gui, D Unnikrishnan +2 more

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides in principle unconditional security of key sharing based on the laws of physics only. In the last decade, several experimental and commercial QKD networks have been built and operated worldwide. Demonstrational applications of QKD in financial institutions, government networks, and critical infrastructures such as the power grid have been initially explored. However, large-scale deployment and full-scale commercialization of QKD networks still faces some technological and standardisation challenges. In this paper, recent developments and in-field deployments of QKD networks are reviewed and advancements in QKD standardisation are also discussed.

Security Challenges and Future Research in Quantum Key Distribution Networks

Subhadra Rajpoot, Kavita Singh, Capt Puneet Singh +1 more

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks have emerged the revolutionary technology in ensuring secure communication in the digital age. By utilizing the principles of quantum mechanics, QKD allows two parties to establish a secret key securely, which can subsequently be used for encrypting and decrypting sensitive information. While QKD holds immense promise for enhancing cybersecurity, it also presents several challenges that necessitate further research to achieve its full potential. The research presented here examines the development of QKD networks, their real-world use, as well as the general QKD network architecture and the most recent advancements in QKD network deployments.

Quantum Key Distribution Networks: Challenges and Future Research Issues in Security

Chia‐Wei Tsai, Chun‐Wei Yang, Jason Lin +2 more

A quantum key distribution (QKD) network is proposed to allow QKD protocols to be the infrastructure of the Internet for distributing unconditional security keys instead of existing public-key cryptography based on computationally complex mathematical problems. Numerous countries and research institutes have invested enormous resources to execute correlation studies on QKD networks. Thus, in this study, we surveyed existing QKD network studies and practical field experiments to summarize the research results (e.g., type and architecture of QKD networks, key generating rate, maximum communication distance, and routing protocol). Furthermore, we highlight the three challenges and future research issues in the security of QKD networks and then provide some feasible resolution strategies for these challenges.

Simulations of Selected Quantum Key Distribution Network Use-Cases

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a novel secret key agreement primitive, enables long-awaited practical Information-Theoretical Security (ITS). Over the last two decades, academic and industrial communities have devoted their time and resources to developing QKD- based networks that distribute ITS keys to remote parties. However, because of the limited availability of QKD network testbeds to the larger research community and the difficulty and cost of their deployment, progress in this area has been noticeably slow. To that end, we provide an analysis of selected simulated use-cases from the EU H2020 OPENQKD project using the QKDNetSim network simulator. The tool has been extensively upgraded to test novel network management methodologies applied to large-scale QKD networks.

Quantum Key Distribution

Miralem Mehić, Marcin Niemiec, Stefan Raß +8 more

The convergence of quantum cryptography with applications used in everyday life is a topic drawing attention from the industrial and academic worlds. The development of quantum electronics has led to the practical achievement of quantum devices that are already available on the market and waiting for their first application on a broader scale. A major aspect of quantum cryptography is the methodology of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which is used to generate and distribute symmetric cryptographic keys between two geographically separate users using the principles of quantum physics. In previous years, several successful QKD networks have been created to test the implementation and interoperability of different practical solutions. This article surveys previously applied methods, showing techniques for deploying QKD networks and current challenges of QKD networking. Unlike studies focusing on optical channels and optical equipment, this survey focuses on the network aspect by considering network organization, routing and signaling protocols, simulation techniques, and a software-defined QKD networking approach.
