Wigner function under changes of reference frames

Abstract

We investigate the transformation laws of the Wigner function under changes of reference frames. By employing the coordinate transformation of the wave functions, we derive an integral representation for the transformed Wigner function in both position and momentum representations. To illustrate our results, we include some basic examples.

Transformation of a wavefunction under changes of reference frame

G. F. Torres del Castillo, B.C. Nájera Salazar

A simple procedure to derive the transformation of a wavefunction under a change of reference frame is applied to some examples and its relation with the transformation of the Hamilton principal function is studied.

Wigner functions of s waves

Joachim Dahl, Sándor Varró, A. Wolf +1 more

We derive explicit expressions for the Wigner function of wave functions in $D$ dimensions which depend on the hyperradius---that is, of $s$ waves. They are based either on the position or the momentum representation of the $s$ wave. The corresponding Wigner function depends on three variables: the absolute value of the $D$-dimensional position and momentum vectors and the angle between them. We illustrate these expressions by calculating and discussing the Wigner functions of an elementary $s$ wave and the energy eigenfunction of a free particle.

The reference-frame independence of quantum probabilities

We investigate the transformation rule of a single particle wave-function under a change of reference frame. A postulate is raised, and some fundamental aspects regarding the reference-frame independence of quantum probabilities are explored.

Wave functions rotated in phase space

John Snygg

The Fourier transformation which maps wave functions in the momentum representation into wave functions in the coordinate representation may be regarded as a 90° rotation in phase space. Starting from this observation we introduce continuously rotated wave functions. These rotated wave functions make it possible to define the expectation values of products of the form pkxn in an unambiguous way. The result is the same as that of the Wigner–Moyal formulation.

We derive explicit expressions for the Wigner function of wave functions in DDD dimensions which depend on the hyperradius---that is, of sss waves. They are based either on the position or the momentum representation of the sss wave. The corresponding Wigner function depends on three variables: the absolute value of the DDD-dimensional position and momentum vectors and the angle between them. We illustrate these expressions by calculating and discussing the Wigner functions of an elementary sss wave and the energy eigenfunction of a free particle.
