Research on the authentication method of distributed energy storage charging pile entry based on quantum encryption technology

Yan Li He, Xiangjian Du, Xuqian Lu +3 more

As a vital component of the "Ubiquitous Power Internet of Things" communication network, the key management of distributed energy storage charging pile communication systems is pivotal to the successful implementation of information security measures. Consequently, achieving lightweight security authentication and communication protection across vast numbers of heterogeneous devices has become an urgent priority. This paper proposes a lightweight network authentication scheme for distributed energy, energy storage, and charging pile systems based on quantum cryptography technology (Charging Pile Key Management Scheme, CPKMS). By integrating pre-shared symmetric keys with public key certificate mechanisms, it ensures efficient and secure network authentication and data transmission for terminal devices operating in resource-constrained environments. Analysis demonstrates that this scheme possesses resistance to forgery attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, and replay attacks, balancing security and efficiency to meet the security requirements for network access key management in distributed energy storage and charging pile systems.

Shaoxian Xia, Hongshu Ye, Xia Xin +3 more

Power distribution operation involves the supervision and control of the operating states of a large distribution power grid. This technology includes several features, e.g. an abundant amount of application nodes, diversity of communication channels, etc. To accelerate the construction of State Grid-electric Internet of things and to guarantee the security of power grids data network and to consider the feature of power grids, a synthetic key management system is proposed. In the first section of this paper, from the perspective of maturity and practicality of related technology, the feasibility of combining quantum private communication and automatic power grid key management system is analyzed and demonstrated. In the next section, a key-management method, which is designed to combine quantum private communication technology and interaction with encryption devices, is designed and implemented. In the concluding section, to guarantee the integrity and atomicity in key storage processes and to achieve the quantum key storage, rollback mechanism of large-capacity quantum key storage is studied and discussed.

Multi-Scenario Quantum Key Distribution Mechanism for Power Grid Terminals

Hua Dai, Xin Sun, Bang Lv +2 more

The smart grid relies on information and communication technology to enhance capabilities and electricity management, with information technology aimed at safeguarding the power grid. However, despite leveraging modern communication systems, the smart grid still faces various security challenges. In this paper, we present our work on implementing quantum key distribution (QKD) in the smart grid. Unlike previous approaches, we designed and evaluated separate wired and wireless key distribution mechanisms to securely distribute keys to the terminals. Our experimental results verified that the bit error rate (BER) of the wired key distribution is below 1.5%, and the code rate exceeds 3 Mbps when the transmission distance is less than 10 km. Additionally, we analyzed the performance of wireless key distribution mechanisms. Through theoretical analysis and application scenario evaluation, we demonstrated the feasibility of using QKD to ensure the security of the smart grid.

In this paper, we mainly explore the application of fiber Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology in Smart Grid. First, the vulnerability of optical fiber communication networks is analyzed. Second, an overview of fiber quantum key distribution technology is given. Third, typical fiber QKD use cases in Smart Grid are proposed. Finally, future research directions of fiber QKD for power systems are discussed. Compared to other classical cryptography technology, the application of fiber QKD in Smart Grid has unique advantages.

Authentication of smart grid communications using quantum key distribution

Muneer Alshowkan, Philip G. Evans, Michael R Starke +2 more

Smart grid solutions enable utilities and customers to better monitor and control energy use via information and communications technology. Information technology is intended to improve the future electric grid's reliability, efficiency, and sustainability by implementing advanced monitoring and control systems. However, leveraging modern communications systems also makes the grid vulnerable to cyberattacks. Here we report the first use of quantum key distribution (QKD) keys in the authentication of smart grid communications. In particular, we make such demonstration on a deployed electric utility fiber network. The developed method was prototyped in a software package to manage and utilize cryptographic keys to authenticate machine-to-machine communications used for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). This demonstration showcases the feasibility of using QKD to improve the security of critical infrastructure, including future distributed energy resources (DERs), such as energy storage.

Recently, more and more governments and institutions are paying attention to quantum security communication because of its strict security. In China, some significant progresses have been made in practice when the research goes deeper. This paper investigates some key technologies of quantum cryptography in smart grid of China. First, the applications and challenges of quantum communication in smart grid are depicted, then the key technologies utilized in smart grid based on quantum key distribution (QKD) are explored in tail. At last quantum secure communication, including fault locating, long distance transmission and WDM technology are discussed. Our researches on the application of quantum cryptography in smart grid are very effective and hopeful to be extended to more application fields.
