Abstract

This chapter is intended for nonpractitioners in the field with a technical background but not necessarily at the doctoral level and so minimizes equations and the more specialized jargon. The chapter starts with a brief history of quantum mechanics. The important basic concepts of quantum mechanics are discussed, and some commonly used terms and common quantum experiments are introduced. The difference between quantum and “classical” physics is discussed. The role of quantum theory in modern physics is explained. A number of applications of quantum phenomena are discussed with some emphasis on the three areas of the US National Quantum Initiative: quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communications. Finally, the various interpretations of quantum mechanics with respect to its meanings for physical reality are touched upon. At this writing, quantum technologies are receiving increased emphasis and funding in several areas both in the US and several other nations, which is discussed.

The formalisms and interpretations of quantum mechanics

Kefu Zhu

This chapter, based on the background information of the previous chapter, will review the formalism of quantum mechanics – its fundamental mathematical structure (the basic contents of Hilbert space representation and operator algebra representation) and physical assumptions (kinematics, dynamics, and measurement theory). These are the premise and foundation for discussing the quantum histories interpretation. Then, in combination with the viewpoints of some literature in recent years, we will explore what is the interpretation of quantum mechanics, analyze the relationship between the theory of quantum mechanics and its interpretation, and declare the author’s basic stance on these two issues. These two are the primary issues that all interpretive work in the philosophy of physics will face (not limited to the interpretation of quantum mechanics), and the necessary clarification here is also conducive to the subsequent discussion. Three common terms – theory, formalism, and interpretation – are explicated and differentiated by offering the necessary definitions of their meanings, based on the works of Acuña and Ruetsche. The clarification will help to make the subsequent related discussions more precise.

Quantum Mechanics by Dr. E. Venkateshwar Rao

Indo-continental Academic Publishers

Quantum Mechanics is one of the most fundamental and intellectually profound branches of modern physics. It provides the theoretical framework for understanding the behavior of matter and energy at atomic and subatomic scales and forms the basis for numerous advancements in science and technology, including semiconductor devices, lasers, nanotechnology, quantum computing, and quantum communication. Despite its abstract nature, quantum mechanics remains indispensable for explaining physical phenomena that cannot be addressed by classical physics. This book, Quantum Mechanics, has been written with the primary objective of presenting the subject in a clear, logical, and student-friendly manner, while maintaining the necessary mathematical rigor and conceptual depth. The text is designed to bridge the gap between classical physics and quantum theory, guiding readers through the evolution of ideas that led to the development of quantum mechanics and its modern interpretations. The book begins with an introduction to the historical background and foundational principles of quantum theory, highlighting the limitations of classical mechanics and the emergence of quantum concepts such as wave–particle duality and quantization. It then systematically develops the mathematical framework of quantum mechanics, including the Schrödinger equation, wave functions, operators, eigenvalue problems, and measurement theory. Key quantum systems and applications are discussed with careful attention to physical interpretation and problem-solving strategies. Special emphasis has been placed on clarity of explanation, step-by-step derivations, and the use of illustrative examples to help students develop a strong conceptual understanding. Each chapter is organized in a structured manner to support effective learning and includes solved problems and exercises that reinforce theoretical concepts and analytical skills. This book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of physics, engineering, and allied disciplines, and it will also serve as a useful reference for educators and researchers. The content has been aligned with standard university curricula and is suitable for both classroom instruction and self-study. It is the author’s sincere hope that this book will make the study of quantum mechanics more accessible and intellectually rewarding, encouraging readers to develop a deeper appreciation for the quantum nature of the physical world. Constructive feedback and suggestions from readers are welcome and will be valuable for improving future editions of this book.

Quantum Entanglement

Javid Naikoo

The aim of this chapter is to introduce the reader to various aspects of quantum entanglement. A detailed summary of the jargon of important mathematical notions, and concepts used in entanglement theory is provided. Various methods of entanglement generation are discussed followed by an introduction to the methods of detection and quantification of quantum entanglement in terms of various witnesses and measures. A brief account of some well-known applications of quantum entanglement is presented. Finally, a set of problems with solutions is provided, illustrating various important concepts discussed in the chapter.

What is this Book About?

Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

This chapter begins with a brief history of how classical mechanics evolved into quantum mechanics. Next a bird’s-eye view of the basic aspects of quantum mechanics and its applications is given. In subsequent chapters, these topics are discussed with reasonable completeness, with a minimum of mathematical background.

An Introduction to Quantum Communication

Vinod K. Mishra

Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory for describing the microworld of photons, atoms, and their aggregates. It is behind much of the successes of modern technology. It has deep philosophical implications to the fundamental nature of material reality. A few decades ago, it was also realized that it is connected to the computer science and information theory. With this understanding were born the new disciplines of quantum computing and quantum communication. The current book introduces the very exciting area of quantum communication, which lies at the intersection of quantum mechanics, information theory, and atomic physics. The relevant concepts of these disciplines are explained, and their implication for the task of unbreakably secure communication is elucidated. The mathematical formulation of various approaches has been explained. An attempt has been made to keep the exposition self-contained. A senior undergraduate with good mathematics and physics background should be able to follow the current thinking about these issues after understanding the material presented in this book.
