Abstract

Quantum entanglement networks has ushered in a new era of communication, with the core task of generating long-distance quantum entanglement being crucial for a multitude of quantum applications. Although current research is primarily focused on establishing long-distance entanglement across various network topologies, there is still a lack of attention to the variability of communication requests within quantum networks. This paper introduces the Fair and Restricted Resource Allocation Algorithm (FARA), designed to meet the business-driven resource allocation requirements within quantum networks. This algorithm prioritizes the demands and urgency of requests to establish a fairer response mechanism, leading to an enhanced user experience. We refine the strategy for allocating network resources to maximize their use during multiple concurrent requests and to improve the success rate of business. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme improves the business success rate by 6.35% to 24.58% and user satisfaction by 0.922 to 4.533 points compared to the Q-CAST algorithm. Additionally, resource wastage is reduced by 473 to 800 units. These enhancements indicate that our research provides effective strategies for business-driven optimization in quantum networks and makes a positive contribution to the development of entanglement networks towards more practical and efficient applications.

Entangled Resource Allocation Algorithm for Quantum Networks

Jincheng Zhang

This paper presents a novel algorithm for optimizing the allocation of entangled resources within quantum networks. The core of the approach lies in employing a reinforcement learning (RL) framework to dynamically manage and distribute entanglement, addressing the inherent challenges of maximizing utilization and enhancing quantum communication efficiency. Unlike traditional static allocation methods, the proposed RL agent learns optimal allocation strategies through iterative interaction with a simulated quantum network environment. The algorithm considers factors such as node connectivity, qubit availability, and communication delays to minimize resource wastage and improve overall network performance. The key performance indicator (KPI) is the entanglement fidelity between communicating nodes. The developed algorithm offers a promising pathway towards realizing the full potential of quantum networks by intelligently managing their most valuable asset: entanglement. The primary goal is to achieve higher fidelity entanglement distribution and improved communication rates. The effectiveness of the algorithm is evaluated through simulations, demonstrating its ability to outperform existing allocation schemes in various network topologies and operational scenarios.

Quantum Network Optimization: From Optimal Routing to Fair Resource Allocation

Zhaozhen Wang, Xingang Shi, Zhengfeng Ji +1 more

Quantum networks are essential infrastructure for enabling large-scale and long-distance quantum communications but face significant challenges in routing optimization and resource allocation due to their probabilistic nature and quantum resource limitations. Existing approaches typically tackle these problems in isolation, often by simply applying classical routing algorithms, maximizing the overall profit to allocate resources without considering fairness, or improving fairness in an ad-hoc way without a rigorous model. This paper proposes a general framework to systematically address these challenges. First, we conduct a thorough analysis of quantum network metrics using routing algebra as the mathematical foundation, and design provably optimal routing algorithms to tackle the unique challenges arising from their probabilistic characteristics. Second, we formulate an optimization model that simultaneously considers fairness among concurrent requests while respecting various quantum resource constraints, and design efficient near-optimal heuristics to solve it. The proposed framework provides both theoretical insights and practical solutions for the design and management of future quantum networks.

Fair-EAS: Entanglement Allocation and Selection for Process-Oriented Fairness in Quantum Communication Networks

Zhaoying Wang, Jian Li, Kaiping Xue +5 more

Quantum communication networks enable advanced quantum applications through remote entanglement distribution among source-destination pairs. Despite efforts to optimize entanglement distribution, fairness in multi-request scenarios has been neglected, potentially causing issues like “request starvation”. To address such issue, this paper concentrates on the unique properties of entangled systems and introduces a process-oriented fairness metric, i.e., expected throughput, departing from conventional approaches used in classical networks. Furthermore, we propose an entanglement distribution scheme named Fair-EAS, which prioritizes entanglement allocation and selection for batching multiple requests to maximize overall throughput while maintaining max-min fairness. To facilitate a convenient solution, we transform the nonlinearity of the problem into an equivalent linear programming formulation and decouple the solution into offline and online phases. In the offline phase, we design a multi-round water-filling-like optimization algorithm to determine the optimal path set for predicting entanglement allocation. In the online phase, we introduce an adaptive compensation algorithm and an entanglement “fragment” exhaustion algorithm to dynamically adjust the path set based on successfully generated entangled pairs. Comprehensive simulations show that Fair-EAS outperforms the existing schemes in terms of fairness by significantly enhancing the minimum throughput and throughput deviation among multiple requests while maintaining an overall throughput close to the optimal level.

A Quantum Overlay Network for Efficient Entanglement Distribution

Shahrooz Pouryousef, Nitish K. Panigrahy, Don Towsley

Distributing quantum entanglements over long distances is essential for the realization of a global scale quantum Internet. Most of the prior work and proposals assume an on-demand distribution of entanglements which may result in significant network resource under-utilization. In this work, we introduce Quantum Overlay Networks (QONs) for efficient entanglement distribution in quantum networks. When the demand to create end-to-end user entanglements is low, QONs can generate and store maximally entangled Bell pairs (EPR pairs) at specific overlay storage nodes of the network. Later, during peak demands, requests can be served by performing entanglement swaps either over a direct path from the network or over a path using the storage nodes. We solve the link entanglement and storage resource allocation problem in such a QON using a centralized optimization framework. We evaluate the performance of our proposed QON architecture over a wide number of network topologies under various settings using extensive simulation experiments. Our results demonstrate that QONs fare well by a factor of 40% with respect to meeting surge and changing demands compared to traditional non-overlay proposals. QONs also show significant improvement in terms of average entanglement request service delay over non-overlay approaches.
