Abstract

In multi-hop multi-relay cooperative wireless communication systems, node selection for physical layer security (PLS) is an important problem. By defining secrecy capacity based on localized vertex spectrum (LVS), three optimization problems namely i) the best destination for a given eavesdropper, ii) the upper and lower bounds of secrecy capacity for a given destination and iii) the joint optimal destination-eavesdropper pair which maximizes the secrecy capacity are proposed. The performance of the proposed methods have been shown in terms of secrecy outage probability (SOP) by performing simulations and the enhanced PLS is benchmarked with existing literature.

Enhancing Physical Layer Security Through Cooperation in Wireless Networks

Jovana Božović, Enis Kočan

Physical Layer Security (PLS) provides a promising complementary approach to cryptographic methods for protecting wireless communications from eavesdropping. This paper investigates secrecy enhancement through cooperative relaying and jamming in a wireless network with two legitimate users, one eavesdropper, and five potential relay nodes operating in amplify-and-forward mode. Three relay–jammer selection strategies are considered: random relay and jammer selection, best-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) relay with random jammer selection, and best-SNR relay with a jammer chosen based on the strongest channel toward the eavesdropper. The secrecy performance of these strategies are evaluated in terms of secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability. The results demonstrate that intelligent relay and jammer selection can significantly improve PLS compared to random selection, highlighting the benefits of cooperation in secure wireless systems.

Secrecy Capacity and Efficiency Outage Analysis of Cooperative PHY-Secure Wireless Systems and Secrecy Capacity-Based RIS Design

Tarun Jain, Sainath Bitragunta, Ashutosh Bhatia

Physical layer (PHY) security (PLS) leverages the inherent randomness of wireless fading channels to provide enhanced secrecy capacity. In this work, we consider a four-node, dual hop, eavesdropper-aware cooperative PHY-security model. Considering probabilistic relay selection and relaying in the presence of hybrid fading channels, we develop an insightful analysis for the probability of PHY-secrecy capacity outage (PSCO) and PHY-secrecy efficiency outage (PSEO). Specifically, we derive closed form expressions for these performance measures and evaluate them numerically to obtain valuable qualitative insights. We also develop an insightful comparative study to show that the cooperative PLS relay model having a destination node equipped with multiple antennas and performing selection combining delivers superior PHY-secrecy outage performance. We extend the analysis to the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted cooperative PLS system. Specifically, we address the design problem of N, the number of reflecting elements in RIS. We develop insightful criteria based on secrecy capacity to derive a closed form lower bound on N. This insightful result provides the values of N that could achieve superior PHY-secrecy capacity than the relay-assisted cooperative PLS system. Our analysis of the former cooperative PLS model and its extension to RIS design is useful for next generation cooperative PLS relay and RIS-assisted wireless systems and networks.

Relay self-selection for secure cooperative in Amplify-And-Forward networks

Shi Yan, Mugen Peng, Wenbo Wang +2 more

Cooperative communication in wireless relay systems can improve the physical layer security, and the relay selection has great impacts on the security performances. In this paper the relay selection in Amplify-and-Forward (AF) cooperative networks is investigated. The system model constitutes of a source, an eavesdropper, a destination, and a number of intermediate nodes with secrecy constraints. The proposed optimal selection (OS) algorithm is based on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) of two hops, jointly protects the target destination against eavesdropping and interference. To simplify the complexity of OS, the suboptimal selection (SS) algorithm is also presented, which is based on the instantaneous of the first hop and the statistical CSI of the second hop respectively. The secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability of these two relay selection algorithms are analyzed. Simulation results of OS and SS validate our theoretical analysis and show enhancement in the secrecy rate over the direct transmission.

Improved relay selection for decode-and-forward cooperative wireless networks under secrecy rate maximization

Seifeddine Bouallegue, Mazen O. Hasna, Ridha Hamila +1 more

Privacy and security have an increasingly important role in wireless networks. A secure communication enables a legitimate destination to successfully retrieve information sent by a source, while it disables the eavesdropper (illegitimate destination) to interpret the intercepted information. Physical (PHY) layer security approaches for wireless communications can prevent eavesdropping without encryption. It exploits the physical characteristics of the wireless channel in order to transmit messages securely. They are typically feasible when the source-destination channel is better than the source-eavesdropper channel. Cooperative schemes are a means to improve the performance of secure wireless communications. We propose an improved relay selection scheme, based on source-eavesdropper channel SNR restriction, that will guarantee the best secrecy rate at the destination under QoS condition. Performance has been studied in terms of secrecy rate, outage probability and average error probability. Simulations shows that the proposed scheme outperforms in terms of the secrecy rate at the destination when compared to techniques in the literature.

Resource Optimization Framework for Physical Layer Security of Dual-Hop Multi-Carrier Decode and Forward Relay Networks

Marryam Nawaz, Wali Ullah Khan, Zain Ali +3 more

Physical layer security (PLS) is an emerging area for information security against eavesdroppers (Eve). Information security of any system can also be improved by using friendly jammers that produce interference signals to Eve. Traditional security techniques are limited by the processing power of the wireless nodes, whereas PLS can achieve communication secrecy without requiring computationally expensive cryptographic operations. The relay networks have emerged as a promising technology to enhance the performance of the wireless systems. This paper proposes a joint resource optimization framework for the PLS of dual-hop decode and forward (DF) relay network with and without cooperative jamming. In particular, the proposed framework consists of a base station (BS), multiple users, DF relays, multiple subcarriers, and an Eve. Our objective is to maximize the sum secrecy rate (SR) through optimal power loading over different subcarriers at BS and relay nodes, and efficient subcarrier assignment. We formulate a mixed binary integer programing problem for secrecy optimization and adopt Lagrangian dual method to achieve the efficient solutions. We also provide three benchmark frameworks, i.e., joint power optimization with random subcarrier assignment, equal power allocation with efficient subcarrier assignment and equal power with random subcarrier assignment to guage the performance of our joint resource optimization framework. Simulation results unveil that the proposed joint resource optimization framework under cooperative jamming and without jamming performs significantly better than the benchmark frameworks.

Secrecy Performance on Half-Duplex Two-Way Multi-Relay Transmission Technique Under Wireless Physical Layer Security

Mohammed Ahmed Salem, Azlan Abd Aziz, Mohamad Yusoff Alias +1 more

The open broadcast nature of the wireless networks makes it vulnerable to the eavesdropper attacks. The physical layer security (PLS) is a grown research field that exploits the characteristics of the physical wireless channel to prevent the eavesdropper interruptions and attacks. The use of the cooperative relay transmission is a method to approach the physical layer security. This paper studies the secrecy performance metrics of the half-duplex two-way multi-relaying technique. A cooperative jamming protocol is proposed to enhance the physical layer security, where the destination sends jamming signals to the eavesdropper node to degrade its channel capacity. However, the relays can act as a jammer and send jamming signals to the eavesdropper node. Moreover, Simulations of the performance metrics namely the secrecy capacity (Cs) and the secrecy outage probability (SOP) applied on the technique are presented and discussed to measure the secrecy level of the proposed technique compared with an existing technique namely half-duplex one-way multi-relaying technique. Based on simulations and discussions the proposed technique outperforms the existing technique in term of secrecy performance.
