Abstract

This paper explores the integration of quantum computing, specifically quantum annealing, into robotics for inspecting electrical transmission lines. By using quantum annealing's computational power, we address the dynamics of robot inspectors on transmission line conductors, enhancing the computational efficiency of managing the movements of robot inspectors on transmission line conductors. The use of these robots is crucial for performing efficient and safe inspections. We discuss the mathematical foundations of quantum annealing, transforming differential equations governing robot dynamics into Ising model Hamiltonians suitable for quantum annealing devices. Through experiments using D-Wave's ‘Advantage’ quantum annealer, we demonstrate the viability of quantum annealing in solving complex robotics problems, paving the way for advanced applications in the field.

Michel Barbeau, Farrokh Janabi‐Sharifi, Houman Masnavi

This paper delves into the fusion of quantum computing and robotics, focusing on motion planning in cluttered environments. Traditional algorithms struggle with complex problems where many constraints need to be satisfied. Hence, optimization-based approaches such as Constrained Quadratic Models (CQM) have become increasingly popular. Our work presents a 3D tracking algorithm based on CQM uniquely adapted for quantum computers to address computational challenges. With their parallel processing capabilities, Quantum computers offer a groundbreaking approach to optimizing complex problems. We formulate the CQM problem for efficient resolution on the D-Wave quantum computer, showcasing its superiority over classical counterparts. Our application centers on real-time planning in a target-chaser tracking scenario, highlighting the quantum advantage in handling the computation complexity of constrained problems. This paper bridges the quantum-robotics gap and sets the stage for future research in quantum-enhanced robotic motion planning.

Application of quantum annealing for scalable robotic assembly line optimization: a case study

Moritz Willmann, Marcel Albus, Jan Schnabel +1 more

The even distribution and optimization of tasks across resources and workstations is a critical process in manufacturing aimed at maximizing efficiency, productivity, and profitability, known as Robotic Assembly Line Balancing (RALB). With the increasing complexity of manufacturing required by mass customization, traditional computational approaches struggle to solve RALB problems efficiently. To address these scalability challenges, we investigate applying quantum computing, particularly quantum annealing, to the real-world based problem. We transform the integer programming formulation into a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problem, which is then solved using a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm on the D-Wave Advantage 4.1 quantum computer. In a case study, the quantum solution is compared to an exact solution, demonstrating the potential for quantum computing to enhance manufacturing productivity and reduce costs. Nevertheless, limitations of quantum annealing, including hardware constraints and problem-specific challenges, suggest that continued advancements in quantum technology will be necessary to improve its applicability to RALB manufacturing optimization.

Quantum Annealing in Quantum Computing

Jincheng Zhang

This paper explores the potential of integrating quantum annealing principles with quantum algorithms to develop efficient quantum computing solutions. The core concept revolves around a novel algorithm termed "Quantum Annealing Algorithm," which leverages the annealing process to optimize the parameters of quantum algorithms, ultimately enhancing their computational efficiency. This work details the theoretical framework, outlining the mathematical formulation of the algorithm and its key components. We present a methodology for mapping classical optimization problems onto a quantum annealing framework, and discuss strategies for managing the trade-offs between annealing speed and solution quality. The proposed approach offers a potentially transformative method for accelerating quantum computations, particularly for problems exhibiting complex, rugged energy landscapes. The focus remains on the theoretical design and potential benefits, without empirical experimental validation.
