Unveiling the Quantum Internet: Potentials, Challenges, and Security through Simulation

Ahmed Abdullah Banaeimoon, Kalead Waleed, Zayed Rashed +1 more

Abstract This study explores the potential of the quantum internet, a realm made possible by the foundational principles of quantum mechanics like entanglement and superposition. In this paper, we unravel the foundations of the quantum internet and its capacity to revolutionize technology. Our analysis dissects its fundamental aspects and emphasizes advantages like security and robustness, recognizing challenges like bandwidth limitations and costs. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a big part of the quantum cryptography realm. It seeks to establish secure cryptographic keys among distant parties and detects potential eavesdropping attempts. The study also delves into future scenarios, applications, and quantum internet protocols, providing a holistic perspective. Through a simulated quantum communication scenario, we evaluate our research on system security by comparing error rates between quantum and classical counterparts. The simulation outcomes underscore the advantages of quantum communication in mitigating security threats and offer valuable insight into its superiority over classical systems. The exploration provides a nuanced understanding of the quantum internet's transformative prowess and pinpoints areas that need attention.

Layer-Wise Security Framework and Analysis for the Quantum Internet

Zebo Yang, Ali Ghubaish, Raj Kumar Jain +5 more

With its significant security potential, the quantum internet is poised to revolutionize technologies like cryptography and communications. Although it boasts enhanced security over traditional networks, the quantum internet still encounters unique security challenges essential for safeguarding its Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA). This study explores these challenges by analyzing the vulnerabilities and the corresponding mitigation strategies across different layers of the quantum internet, including physical, link, network, and application layers. We assess the severity of potential attacks, evaluate the expected effectiveness of mitigation strategies, and identify vulnerabilities within diverse network configurations, integrating both classical and quantum approaches. Our research highlights the dynamic nature of these security issues and emphasizes the necessity for adaptive security measures. The findings underline the need for ongoing research into the security dimension of the quantum internet to ensure its robustness, encourage its adoption, and maximize its impact on society.

Quantum-Safe Secure and Authorized Communication Protocol for Internet of Drones

Dheerendra Mishra, Mrityunjay Singh, Purva Rewal +4 more

Remotely-Controlled Aerial Vehicles (RCAV), popularly known as drones, have gained wide popularity in several applications from military to civilian due to the usage of sensors, actuators, and processors with wireless connectivity for data collection and processing. However, data security and authentication are still challenging as sensitive data is collected and shared in RCAV using an open channel, i.e., the Internet. The existing security of Internet-of-Drones (IoD) communication mainly depends on the hardness of discrete logarithms and factorization problems. However, due to Shor's algorithm, both authorized and secure transmissions are challenging in the presence of highly scalable quantum computers. To mitigate the aforementioned issues and challenges, in this article, we propose an authorized and secure communication scheme for IoD based on Ring Learning With Error (RLWE) problem on lattices, which have the potential to sustain low computation and quantum attacks. The proposed scheme supports mutual authentication and has an efficient session establishment. The evaluation results show that the proposed scheme has superior performance as compared to the existing state-of-the-art solutions on benchmark data sets using various evaluation metrics.
