Quantum Machine Learning in Healthcare: Developments and Challenges

Sita Rani, Piyush Kumar Pareek, Jaskiran Kaur +2 more

Machine learning is playing a very significant role to process voluminous data and its classification in a variety of domains. Due to better performance and rapid development in the last decade, quantum computing is also benefiting many areas. With the amalgamation of these two technologies, a new domain for processing big data more efficiently and accurately has evolved, known as quantum machine learning. Healthcare is one of the prominent domains where a huge volume of data is produced from several processes. Efficient processing of healthcare data and records is very important to facilitate many biological and medical processes to provide better treatments to patients. The fundamental aim of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art review of quantum computing concepts, quantum machine learning framework, and the various applications of quantum machine learning in the domain of healthcare. The comparison of QML healthcare models with ML-based healthcare applications is discussed in this work. The authors also present the various challenges faced in the deployment of quantum machine learning algorithms in the domain of healthcare and possible future research directions.

A Detailed Survey On Quantum Machine Learning And Its Impact On Healthcare Applications

Md Shabbeer, Aarti, Swathi Mummadi

Quantum Machine Learning (QML) is an emerging interdisciplinary field which combines Quantum Computing and Machine Learning. With the help of Quantum principles, QML outperforms classical machine learning (CML) models. These principles make the QML models work exponentially faster than the CML models. A detailed analysis of various QML models, algorithms, and architectures with respect to healthcare applications is presented in this paper. The currently available quantum systems are associated with noise, which is why they are referred to as Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Systems. The internal noise of a quantum system presents various challenges when experiments are implemented and run on Quantum systems and simulators. The current challenges in developing QML for healthcare applications, such as internal noise, hardware limitations, and high computational cost, are also detailed in this paper. The detailed analysis presented in this paper will help researchers to know the opportunities and future directions in this field.

Quantum computing in medical diagnostics and treatment: A systematic review of trends, challenges and future directions

Najnin Sultana Shirin, Md Mehedi Hasan, Md. Kishor Morol +4 more

The growing digitalization of medical diagnostics has resulted in massive amounts of complicated data, including medical imaging and genomic sequences, clinical writing and real-time patient monitoring. Classical machine learning (CML) has achieved amazing success in evaluating such data. But its computational restrictions hinder scalability and efficiency when dealing with high-dimensional biomedical problems. Quantum machine learning (QML) combines the principles of quantum computing (QC) with advanced learning algorithms to offer a transformative paradigm for digital healthcare. This paper provides a systematic overview of QML foundations including quantum data encoding (QDC), variational quantum circuits (VQC), kernel methods, and hybrid quantum classical models. This paper also focuses on their applications in medical imaging, genomics, natural language processing (NLP) for electronic health records, drug discovery and healthcare security. We present comparative insights between classical and quantum approaches such as slow processing of high-dimensional data, limited scalability and inefficiency in complex optimization problems. This review also emphasizes the emerging directions towards quantum-based personalized digital healthcare approaches. By combining medical science with quantum QML has the potential to revolutionize the future of precision diagnostics, treatment optimization and healthcare data security. This study also provides a valuable resource for those interested in quantum computing and researchers who want to stay updated on the fast-growing area.
