Quantum Search using Grover’s Algorithm: Principles, Performance, and Applications

Anggit Gusti Nugraheni, Heri Mahyuzar, Sri Hastuti

Quantum search is one of the most important algorithmic developments in quantum computing because it demonstrates how quantum principles can improve the efficiency of solving unstructured search problems. Grover’s algorithm provides a quadratic speed-up over classical linear search by reducing query complexity from O(N) to O(√N), where N represents the size of the search space. This review examines the principles, performance, and applications of Grover’s algorithm, with emphasis on its theoretical foundation and practical relevance. The discussion covers the roles of superposition, quantum interference, oracle operations, diffusion operators, and amplitude amplification in increasing the probability of measuring a desired solution. The manuscript also reviews the computational performance of quantum search in comparison with classical search methods and considers its relevance to database searching, combinatorial optimisation, cryptography, machine learning, bioinformatics, quantum chemistry, and materials science. The review highlights that Grover’s algorithm is not limited to database retrieval, as many computationally intensive problems can be reformulated as search or optimisation tasks. However, practical implementation remains constrained by current quantum hardware limitations, including decoherence, quantum noise, limited qubit availability, circuit depth, and the difficulty of designing efficient oracles. Despite these challenges, continuing progress in quantum hardware, error correction, cloud-based quantum platforms, and hybrid quantum-classical architectures suggests that quantum search will remain an important area of research. Overall, Grover’s algorithm represents a foundational quantum algorithm with significant theoretical value and potential long-term application in computational domains involving large and unstructured search spaces.

Survey on the Improvement and Application of HHL Algorithm

Xiaonan Liu, Haoshan Xie, Zhengyu Liu +1 more

Abstract Quantum computing is a new computing mode that follows the laws of quantum mechanics to control quantum information units for computation. In terms of computational efficiency, due to the existence of quantum mechanical superposition, some known quantum algorithms can process problems faster than traditional general-purpose computers. HHL algorithm is an algorithm for solving linear system problems. Compared with classical algorithms in solving linear equations, it has an exponential acceleration effect in certain cases and as a sub-module, it is widely used in some machine learning algorithms to form quantum machines learning algorithms. However, there are some limiting factors in the use of this algorithm, which affect the overall effect of the algorithm. How to improve it to make the algorithm perform better has become an important issue in the field of quantum computing. This paper summarizes the optimization and improvement of HHL algorithm since it was proposed, and the application of HHL algorithm in machine learning, and discusses some possible future improvements of some subroutines in HHL algorithm.

Evolution of Quantum Computing Based on Grover's Search Algorithm

Prakhar Shrivastava, Kapil Kumar Soni, Akhtar Rasool

Quantum computing introduces an efficient way for unfolding complex problems on computing systems. It uses concept of superposition and entanglement, & hence supports intrinsic parallelism for obtaining the speedup in context of time over classical computing. Quantum algorithms can be efficiently implemented over quantum computing system. Most popular quantum algorithms like Grover's and Shor's provide a great foundation to specifically design the algorithms. These algorithms work on improving the lower runtime bounds of classical algorithms. Grover's algorithm exhibits a quadratic polynomial speedup while searching an element among `N' elements unstructured database. The algorithmic strategy can be applied over various computer science related applications and some important are being considered in this article i.e. pattern matching, data mining and machine learning. This article explores quantum fundamentals; history based evolution followed by Grover's search algorithm in detail with cascading advantages, limitations & applications and also finally concludes with the significance of quantum computing & quantum algorithmic domains.

Implementation of Efficient Quantum Computing Algorithm for Searching

Nirhali Atharva, Malwade Rohit, P. Akshay +2 more

The K-SAT problem is a fundamental challenge in computational theory, widely used in artificial intelligence, cryptography, and optimization. Classical algorithms struggle with exponential time complexity, making them inefficient for large-scale instances. In this research, we propose an efficient quantum computing approach based on Grover’s algorithm to enhance the search process for satisfiable solutions in K-SAT problems. Our implementation leverages quantum superposition and amplitude amplification to explore multiple possible solutions simultaneously, reducing the search complexity from O (2ⁿ) in classical methods to O(√2ⁿ) in quantum computing. We design a quantum oracle that encodes the K-SAT clauses and integrates it into Grover’s iterative search framework. The performance is evaluated through Qiskit simulations, demonstrating a significant improvement in search efficiency compared to classical brute-force techniques. The results highlight the potential of quantum algorithms in solving complex combinatorial problems with enhanced speed and accuracy. This study contributes to the development of quantum-accelerated optimization methods, paving the way for real-world applications in machine learning, cryptanalysis, and large-scale data processing.

Quadratically Fast Searching in Quantum Computation

Mohit Joshi, Manoj Kumar Mishra, S. Karthikeyan

Grover’s search algorithm is one of the most famous quantum algorithms, which enables search in unstructured dataspaces with a quadratic speedup over any known classical algorithm. This is one of the first algorithms to show quantum advantage over classical methods of computation. Besides its most anticipated application of brute force attack on symmetric key encryptions like AES, it is today being used in many modern applications as a subroutine. In this chapter, we describe the mathematical model of Grover’s quantum search algorithm, its behavior, and the theory of its circuit implementation. This chapter also discusses an exact variant of this algorithm and recent applications of Grover’s quantum search.

The Quadratic Leap: How Grover's Algorithm is Redefining Core Problems in Computer Science and Engineering

Palaganti Venkata Nagendra Sai Sandeep

Grover's algorithm stands as a cornerstone of quantum computing, offering a theoretical quadratic speedup for unstructured search problems. This allows for finding a target item in an unsorted database of N entries in approximately the square root of N steps, a significant improvement over classical algorithms which require a number of operations on the order of N in the worst case. This speedup becomes particularly compelling for very large datasets, where classical exhaustive search becomes computationally intractable. The algorithm achieves this by leveraging fundamental quantum mechanical principles, primarily superposition and interference. It operates by preparing qubits in a uniform superposition of all possible states, then iteratively applying a quantum oracle to mark the desired state by flipping its phase, followed by a diffusion operator that amplifies the probability of the marked state. Despite its theoretical promise, real-world implementation faces substantial challenges stemming from Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) hardware, which is characterized by high error rates and short coherence times. Consequently, achieving a true, scalable quantum advantage remains a future endeavor, contingent on significant hardware advancements. Nevertheless, Grover's algorithm holds significant potential across diverse fields, including enhancing brute-force attacks on cryptographic systems, accelerating solutions for optimization problems, and speeding up search processes in machine learning and unstructured database queries.
