Optimal Relay Selection with a Full-Duplex Active Eavesdropper in Cooperative Wireless Networks

He Zhou, Dongxuan He, Hua Wang +1 more

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of a dual-hop cooperative network in the presence of a full-duplex active eavesdropper, which can overhear the confidential signals and transmit jamming signals simultaneously. We utilize the optimal relay selection scheme to improve the secrecy performance, where the relay maximizing the secrecy capacity will be selected to forward the information. To evaluate the secrecy performance of our system, we derive a compact closed-form expression of the secrecy outage probability. Besides, we also analyze the asymptotic performance related to the position of the nodes. Finally, we verify our analysis through the numerical results, and demonstrate that there exists a secrecy protection region where the secrecy outage probability is below a target probability.

Secrecy Capacity and Efficiency Outage Analysis of Cooperative PHY-Secure Wireless Systems and Secrecy Capacity-Based RIS Design

Tarun Jain, Sainath Bitragunta, Ashutosh Bhatia

Physical layer (PHY) security (PLS) leverages the inherent randomness of wireless fading channels to provide enhanced secrecy capacity. In this work, we consider a four-node, dual hop, eavesdropper-aware cooperative PHY-security model. Considering probabilistic relay selection and relaying in the presence of hybrid fading channels, we develop an insightful analysis for the probability of PHY-secrecy capacity outage (PSCO) and PHY-secrecy efficiency outage (PSEO). Specifically, we derive closed form expressions for these performance measures and evaluate them numerically to obtain valuable qualitative insights. We also develop an insightful comparative study to show that the cooperative PLS relay model having a destination node equipped with multiple antennas and performing selection combining delivers superior PHY-secrecy outage performance. We extend the analysis to the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted cooperative PLS system. Specifically, we address the design problem of N, the number of reflecting elements in RIS. We develop insightful criteria based on secrecy capacity to derive a closed form lower bound on N. This insightful result provides the values of N that could achieve superior PHY-secrecy capacity than the relay-assisted cooperative PLS system. Our analysis of the former cooperative PLS model and its extension to RIS design is useful for next generation cooperative PLS relay and RIS-assisted wireless systems and networks.

Cooperative Transmission for Security Enhancement in Clustered Wireless Sensor Networks

Weiwei Yang, Songqing Wang, Xiaoming Xu

We study opportunistic decode-and-forward relaying transmission in cooperative cluster-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with secrecy constraints, where a passive eavesdropper may overhear the source message. To deal with this problem, we consider the novel opportunistic relay section cooperative transmission for the cluster configuration of WSNs. The system performance in terms of the secrecy outage probability and the probability of nonzero secrecy capacity are analyzed and the exact closed-form expressions are derived over Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, we derive the asymptotic secrecy outage probability which accurately reveals the secrecy diversity order. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis and depict that node cooperation has a great potential to enhance physical layer security against eavesdropping.
