Security and Hop-Aware Shared Path Protection Scheme in Hybrid-Relay QKD Optical Networks

Xue Hu, Hong Chen, Weidong Shao +3 more

In quantum key distribution (QKD) networks, the quantum service channel (QSCh) is highly sensitive to link failures, as any interruption in the quantum channel can immediately halt key generation, and hence the transmission of secured data across optical networks. Hence, robust protection mechanisms are essential to ensure continuous secure key distribution. However, conventional protection approaches, such as dedicated protection and fixed-path routing, often suffer from low resource efficiency and poor adaptability to heterogeneous relay environments. To ensure both survivability and efficient resource allocation in QKD based optical networks, we propose a shared path protection scheme based on hybrid relays. In the proposed approach, K-candidate paths are computed for both the traditional data channel (TDCh) and QSCh, and the working path is selected using a weighted metric that considers both the hop-count and the security degree. To enhance resilience, the shared protection paths are established, allowing multiple backup paths to reuse network resources for connection requests. A connection request is accepted only if both the working and the protection paths are successfully reserved, thereby ensuring strong protection. The system incorporates joint allocation of wavelength and time-slot, and introduces a protection threshold to support shared use of backup resources. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves lower blocking probability, while maintaining high wavelength and time-slot efficiency compared to the baseline methods in different networks.

CPSR-HQKDN: A Hybrid Trusted Relay Quantum Key Distribution Network Routing Scheme Based on Classification of Packet Security Requirements

Lin Bi, Weijie Wu, Xiaotong Yuan +3 more

To ensure the security of information exchange in software-defined optical networks, quantum key distribution (QKD) based on quantum mechanics is introduced. However, the slow and valuable process of generating quantum key resources contradicts the high-speed data transmission requirements of optical networks. To address this issue, this paper proposes the CPSR-HQKDN scheme, which takes into account factors such as security requests, key demand, key residual, and key update rates for trusted and untrusted links. This approach improves resource utilization and service efficiency by optimizing the processing order of key requests. Moreover, the routing strategy dynamically adjusts based on the network resource environment, thereby increasing the success rate of key requests. Through simulation experiments comparing the performance of the CPSR-HQKDN routing scheme with existing schemes, it is observed that in high-concurrent scenarios, the CPSR-HQKDN routing scheme can improve the success rate of key requests by at least 5%.

Key-Recycling Strategies in Quantum-Key-Distribution Networks

Xinying Li, Yongli Zhao, Avishek Nag +2 more

Quantum-key-distribution (QKD) networks can provide absolutely secure keys for the entire communication system in theory. At present, the key-distribution rate is relatively low, and the key-distribution rate decreases exponentially as the distribution distance increases. The trusted-relay scheme commonly used in existing QKD networks achieves the purpose of extending the security distance by consuming additional keys. Since the channel is unreliable, the key-relay process will accumulate system errors to a certain extent, increasing the probability of key-relay failure. In some high-bit-error-rate network scenarios such as wireless networks and disaster environments, the channel-error rate is as high as 30–50%. And in these scenarios, there are usually a large number of confidential messages that need to be delivered. However, the key-management mechanism of the current QKD system does not consider the scenario of key-relay failure. If the key is not successfully relayed, all the keys participating in the relay process will be destroyed, including the key that has been successfully relayed before. This situation causes the key to be wasted and reduces the encryption capability of the system. In this paper, we proposed the quantum-key-recycling (QKR) mechanism to increase the number of keys available in the network and introduced a secure service grading mechanism to properly reuse the recycled keys. The QKR mechanism can be regarded as a key-management mechanism acting on the point-to-point QKD system, and the mechanism is designed for a classical channel to reuse the key resources. A post-processing method for recycled keys is proposed to improve the security of the keys. Simulation results show that the QKD network using the key-recycling strategy is about 20% higher in key-utilization rate than the traditional QKD network without the QKR mechanism, and about 10% higher in-service security coverage.
