Abstract

Modern medicine is inconceivable without medical equipment, achieved because of the technological revolution in the field, which provides specialists with increasingly sophisticated and advanced tools to support the provision of the highest quality medical services for the benefit of patients. Nowadays, the use of Computer Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET-CT), angiograph, various medical robots for diagnosis, treatment, surgery, as well as the use of the multitude of personal mobile devices dedicated to health monitoring, have become commonplace due to an accelerated evolution in the medical field. The era of patient medical records with hundreds of yellowed pages and other handwritten medical documents is beginning to become history, replaced by digital files that can be easily stored and transmitted for analysis by specialists. All this has been made possible by the refinement and widespread use of personal computers and dedicated applications that have evolved over time and are interconnected in networks across the globe. But what do they all have in common? Big Data, which consists of information stored in electronic format, with exponential growth over time, and their storage, analysis and processing is a real challenge even for the most advanced computing systems. The industry has reached a point where traditional computing might not be enough for this use case and there is an increasing need to explore different ways of achieving high speed data processing using quantum computers. This paper aims to analyze the medical fields in which quantum computers have begun to be used, as well as the development possibilities and applications in which they could revolutionize health systems. In healthcare, several clear directions are already outlined where quantum computers can make a difference: in pharmaceuticals to accelerate the discovery of new drugs and vaccines, DNA sequencing, molecular simulations, protein folding, diagnostic assistance, radiotherapy, predictions, and health simulations. On the other hand, in an era of digital technology, where electronically stored data is multiplying exponentially, with increasing cyber threats in the healthcare sector, protecting it will be of paramount importance.
