Abstract

Recently, there has been a lot of interest in and funding for quantum computing in the academic and business communities. The “new race to the moon” is no greater task than constructing a workable quantum computer. Since this technology can crack many encryption methods used today, it is of great interest to national authorities, academics, and sellers of future computer technologies. If this technology were to mature, it may have far-reaching and disruptive consequences for our society. However, it is quite probable that many areas of computing will benefit from quantum computing. This chapter lays out our plans for how software-programmable quantum computers might revolutionize scientific computing in the future. This leads us to believe that quantum computers, similar to graphics processing units and coprocessor cards, will be integrated into hybrid-accelerated computing platforms shortly. Specifically, we discuss how quantum algorithms may revolutionize the field of applied mathematics. Lastly, we illustrate the potential societal effect of quantum-accelerated computational science with many cases.

On the impact of quantum computing technology on future developments in high-performance scientific computing

Matthias Möller, C. Vuik

Quantum computing technologies have become a hot topic in academia and industry receiving much attention and financial support from all sides. Building a quantum computer that can be used practically is in itself an outstanding challenge that has become the ‘new race to the moon’. Next to researchers and vendors of future computing technologies, national authorities are showing strong interest in maturing this technology due to its known potential to break many of today’s encryption techniques, which would have significant and potentially disruptive impact on our society. It is, however, quite likely that quantum computing has beneficial impact on many computational disciplines. In this article we describe our vision of future developments in scientific computing that would be enabled by the advent of software-programmable quantum computers. We thereby assume that quantum computers will form part of a hybrid accelerated computing platform like GPUs and co-processor cards do today. In particular, we address the potential of quantum algorithms to bring major breakthroughs in applied mathematics and its applications. Finally, we give several examples that demonstrate the possible impact of quantum-accelerated scientific computing on society.

A rapidly developing frontier in computer science, the potential applications of quantum computing hold great promise for revolutionary advances in many domains. Quantum computing, which follows the rules of quantum physics, may one day solve problems that traditional computers have failed miserably at. Several of the many uses of quantum computing are covered in this chapter. Optimisation, encryption, medicine development, materials science, and machine learning are only a few of these uses. By making use of quantum phenomena like entanglement and superposition, quantum algorithms may drastically reduce the time it takes to do computations in these domains. This has the potential to greatly improve how problems in the actual world are solved. In addition, the chapter delves into the current state of quantum computing technology, showcasing advancements in algorithm design, hardware development, and error correction. It concludes by examining the societal impacts of quantum computing and the consequences it may have in domains such as cybersecurity, healthcare, and finance. Generally speaking, this chapter provides an overview of the groundbreaking possibilities of quantum computing applications and establishes a framework for future study and development in this intriguing field.

Quantum computing is a novel method of computation that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to handle highly challenging situations in a very short amount of time. Quantum technology has the ability to significantly impact worldwide advancement, even prior to the complete deployment of quantum machines. Quantum technology for communication, computation, and sensors has the capacity to revolutionise many industries, and several nations are making investments in this promising field. This includes research investments from both the public and commercial sectors. This article delves into the recent quantum computing advancements and the potential opportunities made possible by quantum technology in the next few decades. We outline a vision and scientific innovation for embracing the quantum age, as well as explore the pioneering applications of quantum computing. We also highlight software tools and platforms for quantum programming to unlock the power of computing and revolutionize the world. Finally, we identify the groundbreaking impacts of quantum computing on next-generation research and discuss the benefits of unleashing its revolutionary capabilities.

Impact of quantum computing on organizations and their technological infrastructure

Diego León Betancur Pérez, Anny Carolina Betancur Taborda, Leydi Johanna Henao Tamayo

This article investigates the impact of quantum computing (QC) as an emerging technology with the potential to benefit businesses and their technological infrastructure. The main objective is to describe the challenges organizations face when adopting it, as well as the opportunities it offers in increasingly competitive and strategically complex markets driven by exponential growth. The study also identified that, while quantum computing promises to revolutionize areas such as resource optimization, productivity efficiency, and the simulation of future scenarios—enabling better-informed decision-making and risk mitigation—its implementation encounters significant obstacles: high costs, the need for specialized talent, and new security risks. To address these barriers, hybrid models combining cloud and local infrastructure, as well as microservices, have emerged as practical alternatives, enabling organizations to access this technology without requiring substantial initial investment. Ultimately, this research contributes to the academic discussion that quantum computing is not a replacement but rather a complement that can be integrated gradually and carefully. The path forward requires efforts in education and policy to ensure accessible and ethical development, preventing it from becoming a tool reserved for only a few.

Quantum Computing and the Next Technological Revolution: Transforming Civilization Through Quantum Power

Ejiro U, Osiobe, Waleed A., Hammood, Safia, Malallah +3 more

Quantum mechanics principles underpin quantum computing, signaling a major shift in how we process information. While it offers immense processing power and potential advantages, it also presents significant challenges for the cryptocurrency industry. This sector has grown rapidly, supporting decentralized finance and empowering users worldwide, but it also attracts malicious actors looking to exploit its vulnerabilities. Traditional cryptography remains strong, yet increasingly sophisticated computational attacks threaten security. As the cryptocurrency market expands, quantum computing offers both opportunities, such as improved transaction security, and risks, like easier decryption for hackers. Understanding quantum technology’s benefits and challenges is crucial as it develops. Currently, data is protected by traditional cryptography, but future, more powerful quantum computers could weaken this security. This article explores potential uses of quantum computing in daily life and business, explains its functions simply, and discusses societal impacts. Its goal is to help students and general readers understand how quantum technology might transform our world through clear language and real-life examples. Topics include the basics of quantum computing, its present and future applications across industries, and its societal effects. We provide a thorough analysis of how quantum computing could reshape society through mathematical insights, practical examples, and future perspectives.
