Non-Hamiltonian Dynamics of Quantized Vortices in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Strong, Scott A., Lincoln D. Carr

The dynamics of quantized vortices in weakly interacting superfluids are often modeled by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In contrast, we show that quantized vortices in fact obey a non-Hamiltonian evolution equation, which enhances dispersion along the vortex line while introducing a gain mechanism. This allows the vortex medium to support a helical shock front propagating ahead of a dissipative soliton. This dynamic relaxes localized curvature events into Kelvin wave packets. Consequently, a beyond local induction model provides a pathway for decay in low-temperature quantum turbulence.

Dynamic evolution of vortex solitons for coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic potential trap

Ying Wang, Yang Yang, Siqing He +1 more

We studied the evolution of vortex solitons in two-component coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a harmonic potential. Using a two-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation model and a variational method, we theoretically derived the vortex soliton solution. Under an appropriate parametric setting, the derived vortex soliton radius was found to oscillate periodically. The derived quasi-stable states with typical nonlinear features are pictorially demonstrated and can be used to guide relevant experimental observations of vortex soliton phenomena in coupled ultracold atomic systems.

Effects of the localized impurity on a trap on characteristics of evolution and interaction of a few bose-einstein condensate solitons

Yongshan Cheng

The effects of the localized impurity in a conventional potential on the characteristics of the evolution and interaction of a few Bose-Einstein Con-densate(BEC)solitons are investigated by direct numerical simulations of the coupling Nonlinear Schrodinger equations. It is found that such effects depend on the strength and features of the impurity, and are related to the amplitude of the trapping potential, the parameters of the BEC soliton system and the initial condition.
