Statistical Properties of Superpositions of Coherent Phase States with Opposite Arguments

Abstract

We calculate the second-order moments, the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty product, and the Mandel factor for various superpositions of coherent phase states with opposite arguments, comparing the results with similar superpositions of the usual (Klauder-Glauber-Sudarshan) coherent states. We discover that the coordinate variance in the analog of even coherent states can show the most strong squeezing effect, close to the maximal possible squeezing for the given mean photon number. On the other hand, the Robertson-Schrödinger (RS) uncertainty product in superpositions of coherent phase states increases much slower (as function of the mean photon number) than in superpositions of the usual coherent states. A nontrivial behavior of the Mandel factor for small mean photon numbers is discovered in superpositions with unequal weights of two components. An exceptional nature of the even and odd superpositions is demonstrated.

Coherent Phase States in the Coordinate and Wigner Representations

Miguel Citeli de Freitas, V. V. Dodonov

In this paper, we numerically study the coordinate wave functions and the Wigner functions of the coherent phase states (CPS), paying particular attention to their differences from the standard (Klauder–Glauber–Sudarshan) coherent states, especially in the case of the high mean values of the number operator. In this case, the CPS can possess a strong coordinate (or momentum) squeezing, which is roughly twice weaker than for the vacuum squeezed states. The Robertson–Schrödinger invariant uncertainty product in the CPS logarithmically increases with the mean value of the number operator (whereas it is constant for the standard coherent states). Some measures of the (non)Gaussianity of CPS are considered.

Superpositions of coherent states: Squeezing and dissipation

Vladimír Bužek, A. Vidiella-Barranco, P. L. Knight

In this paper we discuss the nonclassical properties of quantum superpositions of coherent states of light. Using general expressions for the Wigner functions of superposition states we analyze the consequences of quantum interference between coherent states. We describe in detail nonclassical properties of a superposition of two coherent states. In particular, we study the oscillatory behavior of the photon number distribution of the even and odd coherent states. We show under which conditions a superposition of two coherent states can exhibit second- and fourth-order squeezing or sub-Poissonian photon statistics. We examine the sensitivity of nonclassical effects such as oscillations in the photon number distribution or second-order squeezing to dissipation. We demonstrate that quantities such as the photon number distribution and interferences in phase space are highly sensitive to even a quite small dissipative coupling, because they depend on all moments of the field observables, and higher moments decay more rapidly than lower moments. Quantities such as quadrature squeezing, on the other hand, are more robust against dissipation because they involve only lower moments. Finally, we find a remarkable effect whereby fourth-order squeezing is generated by damping.

Minimal Products of Coordinate and Momentum Uncertainties of High Orders: Significant and Weak High-Order Squeezing

Miguel Citeli de Freitas, Vitor Dantas, V. V. Dodonov

We consider the problem of minimization of products of mean values of the high powers of operators x and p. From this point of view, we study several two-term superpositions of the Fock states, as well as three popular families of infinite superpositions: squeezed states, even/odd coherent states, and orthogonal even coherent states (or compass states). The new element is the analysis of products of the corresponding (co)variances and the related generalized (Robertson-Schrödinger) intelligent states (RSIS). In particular, we show that both Fock and pure Gaussian homogeneous states are RSIS for the fourth powers (but not for the sixth ones). We show that lower bounds of the high-order uncertainty products can be significantly below the vacuum values. In this connection, the concept of significant and weak high-order squeezing is introduced.

Electromagnetic field fluctuations and uncertainty relation for general quantum superpositions of coherent states

A. V. Kozlovskiĭ

Quantum statistical properties of general superpositions of coherent states of the type Nα,βα+eiξβ have been studied. Formulas for fluctuations (variances) of the coordinate and momentum quadratures and fluctuations of the number of photons in these states are obtained. The amplitude Nα,βnαeiφ+eiξnβeiφ,φ=φα=φβ and phase Nα,βneiφα+eiξneiφβ,n=nα=nβ superpositions of coherent states are considered separately. In the case of amplitude superpositions, a field under certain conditions occurs in a quadrature-squeezed state. At the same time, the photon distribution in the case of amplitude superpositions is always super-Poissonian. In the case of phase superpositions, a field under certain conditions occurs in quadrature-squeezed states for small average numbers of photons. For certain parameters of coherent states, the photon statistics in phase superpositions is sub-Poissonian. Using amplitude superpositions, it is possible to generate a microscopic electromagnetic field with the average photon number below or on the order of unity, as well as mesoscopic and even macroscopic fields with arbitrary large average photon numbers, characterized by significant quadrature squeezing. Using phase superpositions, it is possible to create under certain conditions the electromagnetic field states with sub-Poissonian statistics (squeezed distribution of photon numbers) for an arbitrary large average photon number. Expressions for a ‘strict’ coordinate–momentum uncertainty relation (Cauchy inequality) are obtained and analysed in cases of general, amplitude and phase superpositions of coherent states.

Nonclassical statistical properties of fields in squeezed even and squeezed odd coherent states

Kaicheng Zhu, Xiangru Li, Qin Wang

We examine the nonclassical statistical properties of the squeezed even and the squeezed odd coherent states defined by the superposed states involving two squeezed coherent states with phase difference π between their displacement parameters. We demonstrate that the fields in the squeezed even coherent state can exhibit a remarkably enhanced squeezing level and mean photon number in comparison with the input squeezed coherent state. We also give examples of physical processes that lead to such a superposition.

The nonclassical properties of the superposition involving two squeezing coherent states

Anhua Zou

We mainly examine the nonclassical statistical properties of both squeezed even and Squeezed odd coherent states defined by the superposed states involving two squeezed coherent states with a phase difference n between their displacement parameters. We demonstrate that the fields in squeezed even coherent state can exhibit remarkably enhanced squeezing level and mean photon number in comparison with the input squeezed coherent state. We also point out the examples of the physical processes leading to such a superpotition.
