Abstract

Parity-time ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$) symmetry is extensively studied within non-Hermitian physical systems as it has the capability to ensure the presence of real eigenenergies of the systems characterized by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Previous studies have been mostly based on the Bloch band theory. Recent developments have unveiled intriguing phenomena which can only be explained by non-Bloch band theory. In this paper, we observe the $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ phase transition in photonic quantum walks, which can only be explained by the non-Bloch band theory, which relies on the open boundary condition. Furthermore, we explore the impact of disorder on $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry and demonstrate disorder-induced $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ phase transitions. Our work provides a valuable perspective for further explorations on non-Hermitian physics.

Aspects of Parity-time Symmetry Breaking in Discrete, Classical and Quantum Open Systems

Andrew K. Harter

Analysis of fundamentally open systems which exhibit both spatial reflection (parity) and time-reversal symmetry, called PT-symmetric [1] systems, has played an important role in understanding the dynamics of a broad class of non-Hermitian systems. Such systems support distinct regimes of stability and instability respectively, and the transition between these plays an important role in the system dynamics. We investigate a variety of non-Hermitian systems which exhibit a PT-symmetry breaking transition in both classical and quantum contexts using an array of theoretical and numerical approaches which are directly amenable to physical experiments. Organizationally, we divide these studies into those done on classical and quantum systems. Specifically for classical systems we analyze several interesting phenomena in the context of optical waveguide arrays. These provide an important testing ground for much of the discrete, PT-symmetric theory. In our case, we analyze PT-symmetric extensions of several interesting lattice models. Firstly, we explore single gain/loss pair, PT-symmetric extensions of the Su-Schreiffer-Heeger (SSH) model [2] and the Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model [3,4]. In both cases, we find a veiled symmetry which is responsible for the PT-symmetry. Secondly we expand upon the Rudner-Levitov (RL) model [5,6], a non-Hermitian extension of the SSH model with multiple gain/loss pairs, and we explore the dependence of topological phenomena on changes in the initial state as well as their robustness in the presence of gain-induced nonlinearity. For quantum systems, we explore the rich PT-symmetric phase diagram resulting from time-periodic, Floquet PT-symmetry [7,8]. This is experimentally implementable in ultracold atomic systems [9], and features a reentrant PT-symmetric phase. Secondly, we examine quantum multi-photon statistics for a simple non-Hermitian model which is transformed and mapped to a system with unitary evolution via a unitary dilation, and is fully realizable on a small-scale quantum simulator [10].

Observation of dark edge states in parity-time-symmetric quantum dynamics

Peng Xue, Xingze Qiu, Kunkun Wang +2 more

Topological edge states arise in non-Hermitian parity-time ([Formula: see text])-symmetric systems, and manifest themselves as bright or dark edge states, depending on the imaginary components of their eigenenergies. As the spatial probabilities of dark edge states are suppressed during the non-unitary dynamics, it is a challenge to observe them experimentally. Here we report the experimental detection of dark edge states in photonic quantum walks with spontaneously broken [Formula: see text] symmetry, thus providing a complete description of the topological phenomena therein. We experimentally confirm that the global Berry phase in [Formula: see text]-symmetric quantum-walk dynamics unambiguously defines topological invariants of the system in both the [Formula: see text]-symmetry-unbroken and -broken regimes. Our results establish a unified framework for characterizing topology in [Formula: see text]-symmetric quantum-walk dynamics, and provide a useful method to observe topological phenomena in [Formula: see text]-symmetric non-Hermitian systems in general.

Complex Berry phase and imperfect non-Hermitian phase transitions

Stefano Longhi, Liang Huan Feng

In many classical and quantum systems described by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, spectral phase transitions, from an entirely real-energy spectrum to a complex spectrum, can be observed as a non-Hermitian parameter in the system is increased above a critical value. A paradigmatic example is provided by systems possessing parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, where the energy spectrum remains entirely real in the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ phase while a transition to complex energies is observed in the broken $\mathcal{PT}$ phase. Such spectral phase transitions are universally sharp. However, when the system is slowly and periodically cycled, the phase transition can become smooth, i.e., imperfect, owing to the complex Berry phase associated to the cyclic adiabatic evolution of the system. This remarkable phenomenon is illustrated by considering the spectral phase transition of the Wannier-Stark ladders in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric class of two-band non-Hermitian lattices subjected to an external dc field, revealing that a nonvanishing imaginary part of the Zak phase---the Berry phase picked up by a Bloch eigenstate evolving across the entire Brillouin zone---is responsible for imperfect spectral phase transitions.

Quasi-parity-time symmetric dynamics in periodically driven two-level non-Hermitian system

Zhou Hu, Zhao‐Yun Zeng, Jia Tang +1 more

In recent years, there have been intensive studies of non-Hermitian physics and parity–time (PT) symmetry due to their fundamental importance in theory and outstanding applications. A distinctive character in PT-symmetric system is phase transition (spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking), i.e. an all-real energy spectrum changes into an all-complex one when the non-Hermitian parameter exceeds a certain threshold. However, the conditions for PT-symmetric system with real energy spectrum to occur are rather restrictive. The generalization of PT-symmetric potentials to wider classes of non-PT-symmetric complex potentials with all-real energy spectra is a currently important endeavor. A simple PT-symmetric two-level Floquet quantum system is now being actively explored, because it holds potential for the realization of non-unitary single-qubit quantum gate. However, studies of the evolution dynamics of non-PT-symmetric two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system are still relatively rare. In this paper, we investigate the non-Hermitian physics of a periodically driven non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system. By phase-space analysis, we find that there exist so-called pseudo fixed points in phase space representing the Floquet solutions with fixed population difference and a time-dependent relative phase between the two levels. According to these pseudo fixed points, we analytically construct a non-unitary evolution operator and then explore the dynamic behaviors of the non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system in different parameter regions. We confirm both analytically and numerically that the two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system, although it is non-parity-time-symmetric, still features a phase transition with the quasienergy spectrum changing from all-real to all-complex energy spectrum, just like the PT symmetric system. Furthermore, we reveal that a novel phenomenon called quasi-PT symmetric dynamics occurs in the time evolution process. The quasi-PT symmetric dynamics is so named in our paper, in the sense that the time-evolution of population probabilities in the non-PT-symmetric two-level system satisfies fully the time-space symmetry (PT symmetry), while time-evolution of the quantum state (containing the phase) does not meet such a PT symmetry, due to the fact that time-evolution of the phases of the probability amplitudes on the two levels violates the requirement for the PT symmetry.

Effects of Disorder on Non-unitary PT Symmetric Quantum Walks

Ken MOCHIZUKI, Hideaki Obuse

PT symmetry, namely, a combined parity and time-reversal symmetry can make non-unitary quantum walks exhibit entirely real eigenenergy. However, it is known that the concept of PT symmetry can be generalized and an arbitrary anti-unitary symmetry has a possibility to substitute PT symmetry. The aim of the present work is to seek such non-unitary quantum walks with generalized PT symmetry by focusing on effects of spatially random disorder which breaks PT symmetry. We numerically find non-unitary quantum walks whose quasi-energy is entirely real despite PT symmetry is broken.

Non-Hermitian topological Euler insulators

Longwen Zhou

Topological Euler insulators emerge in multiband systems with real Bloch Hamiltonians and wavefunctions. Their fragile topologies are characterized by the Euler class of degenerate bands and protected by the $PT$ or $C_2T$ symmetry in two dimensions, which go beyond the tenfold $K$-theory classification of topological matter. In this work, we extend the conception of topological Euler insulators to non-Hermitian systems and propose a theoretical framework to unlock their nontrivial Euler topology. Focusing on two-dimensional, three-band non-Hermitian lattice models with symmetric Hamiltonians, we formulate a comprehensive description of their topological Euler bands, entanglement spectrum and bulk-boundary correspondence. Three typical models of non-Hermitian Euler insulators are constructed and investigated explicitly to illustrate our theory. Unique topological phase transitions and anomalous edge-band overlaps with non-Hermitian origins are further identified. Our study establishes the presence of topological Euler bands in non-Hermitian systems and unveils their intriguing physical characteristics, thereby broadening the existing territory of topological matter in non-Hermitian open systems.
