Abstract

Digital computers have transformed human contact, employment, and time management, yet they have limits in drug development. Classical computers can only hold one piece of data at a time, making it impossible to replicate complicated chemical and biological processes. In contrast, quantum computing constructs physical theories with particles such as electrons or photons. Despite these limits, digital computers continue to play an important role when paired with AI, machine learning, and quantum computing. Digital Twin Systems (DTS) are more extensive and integrated uses of digital twin technology that include entire systems or networks rather than just one physical object. This paper compares various DTS and highlights challenges with those DTS.

Quantum Computing for Healthcare Digital Twin Systems

Asma Taheri Monfared, Andrea Bombarda, Angelo Gargantini +1 more

The growing complexity of healthcare systems requires advanced computational models for real-time monitoring, secure data exchange, and intelligent decision-making. Digital Twins (DTs) provide virtual representations of physical healthcare entities, enabling continuous patient monitoring and personalized care. However, classical DT frameworks face limitations in scalability, computational efficiency, and security. Recent studies have introduced Quantum Digital Twins (QDTs) to enhance performance through quantum computing, addressing challenges such as quantum-resistant security and efficient task offloading in healthcare environments. Despite these advances, most existing QDT models remain constrained by fundamental challenges related to quantum hardware limitations, hybrid classical-quantum system integration, cloud-based quantum access, scalability, and clinical trust. This paper provides a comprehensive review of QDTs for healthcare, with a particular focus on identifying and analyzing the key challenges that currently hinder their real-world adoption. Furthermore, it outlines critical research directions and enabling strategies aimed at advancing the development of secure, reliable, and clinically viable quantum digital twin systems for next-generation healthcare applications.

Quantum Computing and AI: Transforming the Future of Drug Discovery and Development

Lovely Chaurasia, Shikha Parmar, Shivani Sharma, Archana Sharma, Renu Virk, Ajay Dixit, Meenakshi Tyagi

The integration of quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI), collectively termed Quantum AI, is revolutionizing the pharmaceutical industry by reshaping the paradigms of drug discovery and development. Traditional approaches to drug design are often limited by high costs, extensive timelines, and the computational intractability of simulating complex molecular interactions. Quantum computing offers exponential processing power, enabling the accurate modeling of quantum-level chemical phenomena that classical computers struggle to handle. Concurrently, AI contributes by enhancing data interpretation, prediction of molecular behaviors, and pattern recognition across large biological datasets. Together, Quantum AI enables faster identification of drug candidates, improved simulation of drug-target interactions, and early prediction of pharmacokinetics and toxicity. Key quantum algorithms, such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) and quantum-enhanced machine learning, have demonstrated potential to outperform conventional methods in quantum chemical calculations. Moreover, this synergy facilitates personalized medicine by integrating patient-specific data to optimize therapeutic outcomes. Despite current challenges related to hardware scalability, algorithm optimization, and ethical integration, the future trajectory of Quantum AI is poised to redefine pharmaceutical innovation. This review underscores the transformative capabilities of Quantum AI and its potential to usher in a new era of efficient, cost-effective, and precision-driven drug development.
