Abstract

We report on the design and characterization of polarization-entangled photon sources at NIR and telecom wavelengths, based on spontaneous parametric downconversion in a linear interferometric arrangement with beam displacers. The sources demonstrate state-of-the-art performance with respect to detected brightness, heralding efficiency, and entanglement visibility. Featuring a stable and compact profile with simple alignment, they hold great promise for future development of field- and space-ready prototypes, alongside serving as a practical guide for researchers interested in designing efficient entangled photon sources.

Efficient and pure femtosecond-pulse-length source of polarization-entangled photons

We present a source of polarization entangled photon pairs based on spontaneous parametric downconversion engineered for frequency uncorrelated telecom photon generation. Our source provides photon pairs that display, simultaneously, the key properties for high-performance quantum information and fundamental quantum science tasks. Specifically, the source provides for high heralding efficiency, high quantum state purity and high entangled state fidelity at the same time. Among different tests we apply to our source we observe almost perfect non-classical interference between photons from independent sources with a visibility of (100 ± 5)%.

High-quality entangled photon source by symmetric beam displacement design

Giacomo Paganini, Álvaro Cuevas, Robin Camphausen +2 more

Entangled photon sources (EPSs) are pivotal in advancing quantum communication, computing, and sensing. The demand for deploying efficient, robust EPSs in the field, characterized by exceptional (phase) stability, has become increasingly apparent. This work introduces a polarization-entangled photon source, leveraging type-0 spontaneous parametric downconversion and constructed using commercial bulk optomechanical components. Our system is versatile, enabling the generation of N00N states for sensing applications or Bell states for quantum key distribution protocols. We attained a maximal Bell inequality violation, with the average entanglement visibility exceeding 99%. The potential for further performance enhancements is also explored.

Compact sources of correlated and entangled photons

Marco Fiorentino B, S. M. Spillane, Tony Roberts +1 more

We present two experiments geared toward the realization of a robust and intense source of polarization-entangled photons. First, we describe a novel source of polarization-entangled pairs that uses periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) and an interferometer based on polarization beam displacers. The source emits an intense flux of high-quality single-mode entangled photons and is stable, robust, and easy to align. Second, we report on sources of correlated photons generated in PPKTP waveguides. Waveguide sources of correlated pairs have been shown to generate high fluxes of pairs: we theoretically and experimentally investigate spontaneous parametric down-conversion generation of photon pairs in waveguides at different wavelengths.

Ultra-bright polarization entangled photon sources, e.g. based on time-reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

Entangled photon pairs are key to quantum optical applications like quantum computing and communication. They're typically generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in non-linear crystals, yet current lab equipment doesn't satisfy the need for robust, compact, and accessible devices. We report about various designs of efficient, ultra-bright entangled photon sources.

Stand-alone orthogonally polarized entangled source for quantum applications at telecom wavelength (Conference Presentation)

Johann Cussey, Jérôme Prieur, Jean Merolla

Photon entanglement has appeared to play a crucial role in the foundation of quantum physics and in the ever-increasing requirements of quantum information processing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum computing. Thus, the industrial development and the characterization of practical entangled photon sources at telecom wavelengths are key element for the deployment of emerging quantum applications, such as Quantum Key Distribution. The photon source is based on a 775 nm pumped type II Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate wave guide (PPLN_WG) designed for generation of orthogonally polarized photon pairs at 1550 nm. Picometer tunability of the converted central wavelength is achieved by using an accurate temperature control of both the PPLN_WG and the laser diode. All optical and electronics elements are embedded in a compact module. This practical photon source is driven by a USB communication port compatible with computer. The main characteristics of the photon source, Coincidence-to-Accidental-Ratio (CAR), brightness, bi-photon spectrum, heralded efficiency, purity, and indistinguishability are measured by using integrated optical benches and a 2-channels very-low-noise InGaAs single photon avalanche counters (G-SPAD). The proposed photon source measurements protocol is also available for the characterization of other photon sources technologies, such as for the Quantum Dots and semiconductor photon sources. We performed two experimental Bell inequality violations by creating polarization entanglement or by using the natural frequency entanglement of our source. Violation by more than five standard deviations Bell inequalities with our setups demonstrate that our photon source is a promising tool for the realization of various distances quantum information experiments.
