Abstract

The developed laboratory work is described, designed to study multiphoton ionization under conditions of resonant excitation of atomic vapors by frequency-tunable laser radiation. Atomic pairs of potassium and rubidium were chosen as objects of study. To demonstrate the resonant nature of multiphoton ionization, the results of studies of the dependence of the magnitude of the ion signal on the frequency of laser radiation causing this signal are presented. Analytical expressions are given to describe the experimentally observed patterns of resonant ionization processes. Laboratory work is part of a set of works on the study of resonant nonlinear optics for students studying physics at universities.

Investigations of resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionizations of atomic mercury and potassium

Kelly Robert Lim Mah

Two investigations are reported on the application of resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (RMPI) to gaseous mixtures of an atomic vapor and a few Torr of argon. Photon fluxes large enough to ionize atoms by RMPI were produced by focussing down the light from a tunable pulsed dye laser. The irradiances generated were of the order of 500MWcm⁻². Ionization was detected by a voltage biased wire electrode that simply collected the photoelectrons either directly or after some gas multiplication. One investigation was the measurement of the dependence of RMPI processes in mercury on the polarization of the incident light for comparisons with theoretical calculations. The processes were four-photon resonant absorptions to either a ¹S₀ or ¹’³D₂ level followed by single photon ionization. Complete photoionization of all atoms excited to the resonant levels is established and the measured polarization dependences are found to agree with the calculated polarization dependence for the resonant excitation step of the RMPI process. Unexplained observations of the distortions in the polarization dependence of the ion yield and the absorption linewidth of the 6d ¹D₂ resonance are discussed. The second investigation was a study of the density dependent electric dipole forbidden two-photon resonant transition ²S → ²P in three-photon RMPI spectra of the Rydberg states of potassium. Stark interactions are shown to be unlikely and too weak. From the characteristics of the spectra, the excitation process is identified as a laser-assisted collision interaction.

Influence of multiphoton ionization on frequency conversion in alkali metal vapors

С. А. Бахрамов, I. G. Kirin, Pulat K. Khabibullaev +1 more

An investigation was made of tunable emission of violet radiation from alkali metal vapors involving a fourphoton process using radiation from a single tunable laser. The influence of ionization of the atoms on the parameters of the emitted radiation was also studied. It was established that as the vapor pressure increases, efficient collisional ionization is observed in addition to resonant three-photon ionization and this may result in complete ionization of the atoms.

Laser-induced resonant multiphoton and collisional ionizations of rubidium atoms

С. А. Бахрамов, E. V. Vaganov, А. М. Коххаров +1 more

Rubidium vapor (1011 - 1014 cm-3) was irradiated by a dye-laser beam (10 kW(DOT)cm-2 - 2 MW(DOT)cm-2, pulse duration approximately 30 nsec, linewidth <EQ 0.25 cm-1), which was tuned to the D1,2-resonance lines. The mutual competition of the two photon ionization, associative ionization and Penning ionization of the laser excited rubidium atoms was investigated. The data of laser intensities and a rubidium vapor concentrations, which results in domination of the each ionization channels were founded. On the basis of the received experimental results, the cross-section values for the multiphoton and collisional ionization channels of laser-excited atoms were determined.

Computational Study of Resonantly Ionizing Rubidium Vapor by Nanosecond Laser Pulses

Mohamed Mahmoud, Yosr E. E.-D. Gamal

An investigation of the resonant interaction of the rubidium atoms with an intensity (10 kWcm-2 ≤ I ≤ 2 MWcm-2) and a wavelength close to that of the D1 and D2 transitions of the rubidium atom (5S1/2 → 5P3/2 or 5S1/2 → 5P1/2, λD1 = 780 nm, λD2 = 795 nm), which has passes through rubidium vapor with density (1011 - 1014 cm-3) been studied theoretically. The system of equations describing the processes of Collisional ionization and multiphoton ionization of rubidium vapour resonantly excited with nanosecond pulsed laser is solved. The dependence of the ion density on the laser intensity and the atomic density of rubidium are considered. The result of calculations revealed that, both quadratic ion density dependence on laser intensity and linear behaviour of the ion density versus rubidium density for 5S1/2 → 5P3/2 transition is due to photoioization process. In contrast, for 5S1/2 → 5P1/2 transition, the ion density dependence is nonlinear and indicates that the collisional processes play the major contribution in the total ionization. Also, the obtained results showed reasonable agreement with the experimentally measured values of the ion density dependence given by Bakhramov et al. In addition, the analysis of mutual competition between the different ionization processes considered for the ion yield as a function of both laser intensity and atoms density are also presented this work.

Resonant structure of the formation of doubly charged ions in multiphoton ionization of Sr atoms in the infrared spectral region

І. І. Бондар, В. В. Суран

The process of forming doubly charged ions in ionization of Sr atoms by laser radiation in the frequency region of 8200–9100 cm −1 is studied experimentally. The resonant structure of the yield of these ions as a function of the radiation frequency is found to be determined by the excitation of strongly perturbed states of Sr atoms.

Multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone

The most important results of study of multiphoton ionization of atoms are reviewed. Discussions are presented of specific features of the process, theoretical methods of description of ionization of atoms in a strong light field, the basic principles of design of experiments in which intense laser radiation is used, results of investigation of direct and resonance processes of multiphoton ionization, and the mutual relation between multiphoton processes (multiphoton excitation and ionization) and various phenomena leading to perturbation of the spectrum of bound states of an electron in an atom under the influence of a strong light field.
