Abstract

Efficient and reliable storage, analysis, and transmission of medical images are imperative for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and management of various diseases. Since quantum computing can revolutionize big data analytics by providing faster solutions and security tactics, numerous studies in this field have focused on the use of quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms to enhance the performance of traditional medical image processing approaches. This review aims to provide readers with a succinct yet adequate compendium of the advances in medical image processing combined with quantum behaviors for disease diagnosis and medical image security. Some open challenges are outlined, identifying the performance limitations of current quantum technology in their applications, while addressing the short-, medium-, and long-term development plans of this field in designing future quantum healthcare systems. We hope that this review will provide full guidance for upcoming researchers interested in this area and will stimulate further appetite of experts already active in this area aimed at the pursuit of more advanced quantum paradigms in medical image processing applications.

Quantum Computing for Healthcare: A Review

Raihan Ur Rasool, Hafiz Farooq Ahmad, Wajid Rafique +3 more

In recent years, the interdisciplinary field of quantum computing has rapidly developed and garnered substantial interest from both academia and industry due to its ability to process information in fundamentally different ways, leading to hitherto unattainable computational capabilities. However, despite its potential, the full extent of quantum computing’s impact on healthcare remains largely unexplored. This survey paper presents the first systematic analysis of the various capabilities of quantum computing in enhancing healthcare systems, with a focus on its potential to revolutionize compute-intensive healthcare tasks such as drug discovery, personalized medicine, DNA sequencing, medical imaging, and operational optimization. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, we have developed taxonomies across different dimensions, including background and enabling technologies, applications, requirements, architectures, security, open issues, and future research directions, providing a panoramic view of the quantum computing paradigm for healthcare. Our survey aims to aid both new and experienced researchers in quantum computing and healthcare by helping them understand the current research landscape, identifying potential opportunities and challenges, and making informed decisions when designing new architectures and applications for quantum computing in healthcare.

Quantum Computing in Medical Imaging

Dr Yogesh Kumar Rathore, Suman Swarnkar

Quantum computing is quickly revolutionizing medicine, promising unprecedented levels of processing, analysis, and decision-making abilities. This review discusses recent developments in applying quantum computing to medical imaging, diagnostics, and treatment planning. Quantum machine learning and hybrid quantum-classical models have been used by researchers to show improved accuracy, speed, and scalability in medical image classification, segmentation, and disease prediction. Quantum-improved algorithms are being implemented for early detection of multifactorial diseases like cancer and neurologic disorders with potential for advancing clinical prognoses and biomarker discovery. Moreover, quantum cryptography methods are under development to enhance security for private medical information with concerns regarding expanding privacy and security risks. Improvements in quantum neural networks and adaptive hybrid quantum convolutional neural networks (CNNs) also hold promise in enhancing diagnostic efficiency and resource savings. This review synthesizes existing applications, identifies new trends, and delineates challenges and future directions of quantum computing in medicine. It underscores the importance of explainable and interpretable quantum AI systems to maintain clinical trust and utility. The results indicate that quantum technologies, although in their infancy, have transformative potential for precision medicine, personalized therapy, and sophisticated medical decision-making.

Quantum Image Processing for Medical Image Analysis: A Comprehensive Literature Survey

K. L. Sujitha, S. Umamaheswaran

This literature review analyses the convergence of unsupervised learning and quantum image processing for medical imaging applications. It aims to look at advancements in quantum convolutional neural networks (QC-NNs), variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), quantum-enhanced neural architectures, and hybrid quantum-classical systems with a focus on image classification and enhancement. The goal of this project is to explore possible solutions for medical image analysis, so that it can be more accurate and efficient by using unsupervised learning and quantum computing frameworks. The survey explores how quantum-assisted workflows can enhance the images from medical images, providing new avenues to diagnosis and visualization. While the NISQ era is promising, the limitations of NISQ are not permitting full quantum advantage in clinical practice at this time. To augment medical imaging with quantum-assisted unsupervised learning, this study presents research gaps and a path forward.
