Emergent (2+1)D topological orders from iterative (1+1)D gauging

Abstract

Gauging introduces gauge fields in order to localize an existing global symmetry, resulting in a dual global symmetry on the gauge fields that can be gauged again. By iterating the gauging process on spin chains with Abelian group symmetries and arranging the gauge fields in a 2D lattice, the local symmetries become the stabilizer of the XZZX-code for any Abelian group. By twisting the gauging map, we obtain codes that explicitly confine anyons, whose local creating operators violate an odd number of plaquettes. Their fusion results in either mobile dipole excitations twisting only half of the plaquette terms, or complete immobile Sierpiński-like excitations if we twist all the terms. Our construction naturally realizes any gapped boundary by taking different quantum phases of the initial (1+1)D globally symmetric system. In addition, our method also establishes a promising route to obtain higherdimensional topological codes from lower ones and to identify their gapped boundaries and their tensor network representations.

Systematic construction of stabilizer codes via gauging abelian boundary symmetries

Bram Vancraeynest-De Cuiper, José Garre-Rubio

We propose a systematic framework to construct a ( d + 1 ) -dimensional stabilizer model from an initial generic d-dimensional abelian symmetry. Our approach builds upon the iterative gauging procedure, developed by one of the authors in [J. Garre-Rubio, Nature Commun. 15, 7986 (2024)]\cite{Garre24}, in which an initial symmetric state is repeatedly gauged to obtain an emergent model in one dimension higher that supports the initial symmetry at its boundary. This method not only enables the construction of emergent states and corresponding commuting stabilizer Hamiltonians of which they are ground states, but it also provides a way to construct gapped boundary conditions for these models that amount to spontaneously breaking part of the boundary symmetry. In a detailed introductory example, we showcase our paradigm by constructing three-dimensional Clifford-deformed surface codes from iteratively gauging a global 0-form symmetry that lives in two dimensions. We then provide a proof of our main result, hereby drawing upon a slight extension of the gauging procedure of Williamson. We additionally provide two more examples in d = 2 in which different type-I fracton orders emerge from gauging initial linear subsystem and Sierpinski fractal symmetries. En passant, we provide explicit tensor network representations of all of the involved gauging maps and the emergent states.

Non-abelian quantum double models from iterated gauging

David Blanik, José Garre-Rubio

We reconstruct all (2+1)D quantum double models of finite groups from their boundary symmetries through the repeated application of a gauging procedure, extending the existing construction for abelian groups. We employ the recently proposed categorical gauging framework, based on matrix product operators (MPOs), to derive the appropriate gauging procedure for the $\mathsf{Rep}\, G$ symmetries appearing in our construction and give an explicit description of the dual emergent $G$ symmetry, which is our main technical contribution. Furthermore, we relate the possible gapped boundaries of the quantum double models to the quantum phases of the one-dimensional input state to the iterated gauging procedure. Finally, we propose a gauging procedure for 1-form $\mathsf{Rep}\, G$ symmetries on a two-dimensional lattice and use it to extend our results to the construction of (3+1)D quantum doubles models through the iterative gauging of (2+1)-dimensional symmetries.

Global Symmetries, Code Ensembles, and Sums over Geometries

Ahmed Barbar, Anatoly Y. Dymarsky, Alfred D. Shapere

We consider Abelian topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) in 3D and show that gaugings of invertible global symmetries naturally give rise to additive codes. These codes emerge as nonanomalous subgroups of the 1-form symmetry group, parametrizing the fusion rules of condensable TQFT anyons. The boundary theories dual to TQFTs with a maximal symmetry subgroup gauged, i.e., with the corresponding anyons condensed, are "code" conformal field theories (CFTs). This observation bridges together, in the holographic sense, results on 1-form symmetries of 3D TQFTs with developments connecting codes to 2D CFTs. Building on this relationship, we proceed to consider the ensemble of maximal gaugings (topological boundary conditions) in a general, not necessarily Abelian 3D TQFT, and propose that the resulting ensemble of boundary CFTs has a holographic description as a gravitational theory: the bulk TQFT summed over topologies.

Realizing triality and $p$-ality by lattice twisted gauging in (1+1)d quantum spin systems

Da-Chuan Lu, Zhengdi Sun, Yi‐Zhuang You

In this paper, we study the twisted gauging on the (1+1)d lattice and construct various non-local mappings on the lattice operators. To be specific, we define the twisted Gauss law operator and implement the twisted gauging of the finite group on the lattice motivated by the orbifolding procedure in the conformal field theory, which involves the data of non-trivial element in the second cohomology group of the gauge group. We show the twisted gauging is equivalent to the two-step procedure of first applying the SPT entangler and then untwisted gauging. We use the twisted gauging to construct the triality (order 3) and p p -ality (order p p ) mapping on the \mathbb{Z}_p× \mathbb{Z}_p ℤ p × ℤ p symmetric Hamiltonians, where p p is a prime. Such novel non-local mappings generalize Kramers-Wannier duality and they preserve the locality of symmetric operators but map charged operators to non-local ones. We further construct quantum process to realize these non-local mappings and analyze the induced mappings on the phase diagrams. For theories that are invariant under these non-local mappings, they admit the corresponding non-invertible symmetries. The non-invertible symmetry will constrain the theory at the multicritical point between the gapped phases. We further give the condition when the non-invertible symmetry can have symmetric gapped phase with a unique ground state.

Twisted gauging and topological sectors in (2+1)d Abelian lattice gauge theories

Bram Vancraeynest-De Cuiper, Clement Delcamp

Given a two-dimensional quantum lattice model with an Abelian gauge theory interpretation, we investigate a duality operation that amounts to gauging its invertible 1-form symmetry, followed by gauging the resulting 0-form symmetry in a twisted way via a choice of discrete torsion. Using tensor networks, we introduce explicit lattice realisations of the so-called condensation defects, which are obtained by gauging the 1-form symmetry along submanifolds of spacetime, and employ the same calculus to realise the duality operators. By leveraging these tensor network operators, we compute the non-trivial interplay between symmetry-twisted boundary conditions and charge sectors under the duality operation, enabling us to construct isometries relating the dual Hamiltonians. Whenever a lattice gauge theory is left invariant under the duality operation, we explore the possibility of promoting the self-duality to an internal symmetry. We argue that this results in a symmetry structure that encodes the 2-representations of a 2-group.
