Shaping Quantum Noise through Cascaded Nonlinear Processes in a Dissipation-Engineered Multimode Cavity

Sahil Pontula, Yannick Salamin, Charles Roques‐Carmes +1 more

Multimode quantum light is enticing for several applications, spanning imaging, spectroscopy, communication, and more. Parametric nonlinear processes have been vital in realizing squeezed and other quantum states of light. However, most work exploiting these processes has focused on generating multimode squeezed vacua and squeezing in mode superpositions (supermodes). Bright squeezing in multiple discrete frequency modes, if realized, could unlock novel applications in quantum-enhanced spectroscopy and optical quantum computing. Here, we show how dissipation engineering of a multimode nonlinear cavity with cascaded three-wave-mixing processes allows us to shape above-threshold frequency combs that feature strong single-mode output amplitude noise squeezing over 10 dB below the shot-noise limit, tunable across the comb. In addition, we demonstrate squeezing for multiple discrete frequency modes above threshold. This bright squeezing arises from enhancement of the (noiseless) nonlinear rate relative to decay rates in the system due to the cascaded generation of photons in a single idler “bath” mode. A natural consequence of the strong nonlinear coupling in our system is the creation of an effective cavity in the synthetic frequency dimension that sustains Bloch oscillations in the modal energy distribution. Bloch mode engineering could provide an opportunity to better control nonlinear energy flow in the synthetic frequency dimension, with exciting applications in quantum random walks and topological photonics. Lastly, we show evidence of long-range correlations in amplitude noise between discrete frequency modes, enabling long-range entanglement in a synthetic frequency dimension and providing a new resource for quantum communication. Interference-induced three-beam quantum squeezing enhancement

Yan-Fen Zhou, Xiaochun Li, Yanbo Lou +3 more

Quantum squeezed states, exhibiting noise reduction below the shot-noise limit, are important resources in quantum optics. The degree of quantum squeezing directly influences the performance of physical systems, making the achievement of higher squeezing levels essential. Here, by utilizing the phase-sensitive cascaded four-wave mixing (PSCFWM) processes, we experimentally demonstrate the enhancement of three-beam quantum squeezing. The intensity-difference squeezing among the three output beams from PSCFWM processes is about 8.2 dB, which is enhanced by about 1.3 dB compared with that generated by phase-insensitive cascaded four-wave mixing processes. Our scheme provides an effective way for enhancing multi-beam quantum squeezing and holds promise for applications in multimode quantum correlated imaging and multiparameter quantum precision measurement.

Generation of tripartite squeezed state by cascaded four-wave mixing in single hot rubidium atomic system

Changbiao Li, Yufeng Li, Wei Li +4 more

Abstract We report the quantum correlated triple beams via cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) amplified in single hot atomic vapor. Experimentally, we show that strong quantum correlation of three light beams, among them any two’s quantum correlation is characterized by the maximum value of intensity-difference squeezing (IDS) about −7.8 ± 0.3 dB. We found there is IDS between two idler beams, because two pairs of Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen injections potentially exist in our system. Besides, CFWM can emit three-mode beams at three different frequencies, in which these beams can be well separated in the spatial domain. Moreover, much difference with other methods, the injecting probe field can manipulate the gain and IDS of output three-mode light beams, which is resulting from competition relationship between cascaded two four-wave mixing processes. More interestingly, Autler–Townes splitting of gain peaks of output signals due to dressing effect of pumping fields, will lead to the evolution of measured two- and three-mode IDS from single-mode to multi-mode at frequency domain. This result will provide a multimode quantum resource which can potentially realize multimode entanglement and quantum networks.
