Quantum Pair Generation in Nonlinear Metasurfaces with Mixed and Pure Photon Polarizations

Jiho Noh, Tomás Santiago‐Cruz, Vitaliy Sultanov +4 more

Metasurfaces are highly effective at manipulating classical light in the linear regime; however, effectively controlling the polarization of nonclassical light generated from nonlinear resonant metasurfaces remains a challenge. Here, we present a solution by achieving polarization engineering of frequency-nondegenerate biphotons emitted via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in GaAs metasurfaces, utilizing quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBIC) resonances to enhance biphoton generation. Through comprehensive polarization tomography, we demonstrate that the emitted photons' polarization directly reflects the qBIC mode's far-field properties. Furthermore, we show that both the type of qBIC mode and the symmetry of the meta-atoms can be tailored to control each single-photon polarization state, and that the subsequent two-photon polarization states are nearly separable, offering potential applications in the heralded generation of single photons with adjustable polarization. This work provides a significant step toward utilizing metasurfaces to generate quantum light and engineer their polarization, a critical aspect for future quantum technologies.

Beyond Brightness: Biphoton-State Engineering with Nonlinear Metasurfaces

Alexander S. Solntsev

Nonlinear metasurfaces have been demonstrated as ultrathin photon-pair sources, bringing resonant nanophotonics into a field traditionally dominated by bulk crystals and waveguides. Early experiments established spontaneous parametric down-conversion from nanoantennas and metasurfaces and showed resonant enhancement. Recent experiments and theoretical proposals address a more specific objective: a metasurface that emits the biphoton state required by a particular quantum-optical experiment. Resonant dispersion, mode symmetry, quasi-bound states in the continuum, guided-mode resonances, flatband design, multi-resonance interference, polarisation engineering and tunable emission geometry can shape both the pair-generation probability and the spatial, spectral and polarisation structure of the emitted state. This Perspective examines how these physical parameters determine the joint amplitude and which measurements establish the resulting two-photon state.

Generation and shaping of quantum photon-pair states in nonlinear metasurfaces

Andrey A. Sukhorukov

We present theoretical and experimental advances on photon-pair generation through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in nonlinear nanostructures and metasurfaces, underpinning quantum entanglement engineering at sub-wavelength scale for photon shaping with tailored polarization and spatial correlations. We derive explicit theoretical expressions for the measurable photon counts and quantum correlations, incorporating material dispersion and absorption characteristics [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 123901 (2016)], and demonstrate experimentally the generation of quantum heralded photon pairs from a single AlGaAs nanodisk [Optica 6, 1416 (2019)]. We further reveal the opportunities to enhance the generation rate through high-Q resonances including bound states in the continuum [doi:10.1117/12.2539888 (2019)]. We also outline the applications of metasurfaces for the manipulation and measurement of multi-photon quantum states for free-space quantum imaging and communications.
