Abstract

Based on the encoding of a qubit into an oscillator, we show how an optical test of continuous-variable quantum contextuality can be achieved using the photon’s spatial modes. We provide a concrete state-independent construction.

Proposed Experimental Test for Proving Quantum Contextuality with Non-entangled Photons

Yoshihiro Nambu

We present a new and feasible test proving quantum contextuality in four-dimensional Hiltbert space. In our scheme, a contradiction between quantum mechanics and noncontextual hidden variables is revealed through the measurement statistics of two joint measurements of an ensemble of non-entangled qubits. The origin of nonclassicality is fully attributed to the measurement process. Quantum optical realization using photon pairs and linear optics are presented.

Local hidden-variable model for a recent experimental test of quantum nonlocality and local contextuality

Brian R. La Cour

An experiment has recently been performed to demonstrate quantum nonlocality by establishing contextuality in one of a pair of photons encoding four qubits; however, low detection efficiencies and use of the fair-sampling hypothesis leave these results open to possible criticism due to the detection loophole. In this Letter, a physically motivated local hidden-variable model is considered as a possible mechanism for explaining the experimentally observed results. The model, though not intrinsically contextual, acquires this quality upon post-selection of coincident detections. • A local hidden-variable model is applied to a recent quantum optics experiment. • The experiment was designed to demonstrate quantum nonlocality via local contextuality. • Using a single fitting parameter, the model accurately predicts the observed results.

Experimental test of state-independent quantum contextuality of an indivisible quantum system

Yun‐Feng Huang, Meng Li, Dong-Yang Cao +5 more

We report a state-independent experimental test of quantum contextuality of a single-photon qutrit. The experimental results demonstrate violations of an inequality originally formulated by Yu and Oh [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 030402 (2012)] and further optimized by Cabello et al. [Phys. Rev. A 85, 032108 (2012)]; this inequality is satisfied by all noncontextual hidden variable models and is violated by all qutrit states. Our experiment shows quantum contextuality of this nature in a most fundamental way: A way that is independent of state and unrelated to entanglement.

Testing quantum contextuality of continuous-variable states

Gerard McKeown, Matteo G. A. Paris, Mauro Paternostro

We investigate the violation of noncontextuality by a class of continuous-variable states, including variations of entangled coherent states and a two-mode continuous superposition of coherent states. We generalize the Kochen-Specker (KS) inequality discussed by Cabello [A. Cabello, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 210401 (2008)] by using effective bidimensional observables implemented through physical operations acting on continuous-variable states, in a way similar to an approach to the falsification of Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequalities put forward recently. We test for state-independent violation of KS inequalities under variable degrees of state entanglement and mixedness. We then demonstrate theoretically the violation of a KS inequality for any two-mode state by using pseudospin observables and a generalized quasiprobability function.

State-Independent Experimental Test of Quantum Contextuality in an Indivisible System

Chong Zu, Y.-X. Wang, D.-L. Deng +5 more

We report the first state-independent experimental test of quantum contextuality on a single photonic qutrit (three-dimensional system), based on a recent theoretical proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 030402 (2012)]. Our experiment spotlights quantum contextuality in its most basic form, in a way that is independent of either the state or the tensor product structure of the system.

State-independent quantum contextuality for continuous variables

Angel Ricardo Plastino, Adán Cabello

Recent experiments have shown that nature violates noncontextual inequalities regardless of the state of the physical system. So far, all these inequalities involve measurements of dichotomic observables. We show that state-independent quantum contextuality can also be observed in the correlations between measurements of observables with genuinely continuous spectra, highlighting the universal character of the effect.
