Abstract

We perform quantum detector tomography of a novel, unknown detector – superconducting magnesium diboride nanowire, and show that reconstructed POVM elements provide insights into underlying detection mechanism and multiphoton detection efficiencies.

We demonstrate quantum detector tomography of three different multiplexed SNSPDs, including a nonlinear detector of dimension > 103. We use this to extract efficiency, dark-count and cross-talk probability from just four elements of the reconstructed POVMs.

Quantum detector tomography of a time-multiplexed superconducting nanowire single-photon detector at telecom wavelengths

Chandra M. Natarajan, Lijian Zhang, Hendrik B. Coldenstrodt-Ronge +5 more

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are widely used in telecom wavelength optical quantum information science applications. Quantum detector tomography allows the positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) of a single-photon detector to be determined. We use an all-fiber telecom wavelength detector tomography test bed to measure detector characteristics with respect to photon flux and polarization, and hence determine the POVM. We study the SNSPD both as a binary detector and in an 8-bin, fiber based, Time-Multiplexed (TM) configuration at repetition rates up to 4 MHz. The corresponding POVMs provide an accurate picture of the photon number resolving capability of the TM-SNSPD.

Quantum detector tomography of a high dynamic-range superconducting nanowire single-photon detector

Timon Schapeler, Jan Philipp Höpker, Tim J. Bartley

Abstract We demonstrate and verify quantum detector tomography of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) in a multiplexing scheme which permits measurement of up to 71 000 photons per input pulse. We reconstruct the positive operator valued measure (POVM) of this device in the low photon-number regime, and use the extracted parameters to show the POVMs spanning the whole dynamic range of the device. We verify this by finding the mean photon number of a bright state. Our work shows that a reliable quantum description of large-scale SNSPD devices is possible, and should be applicable to other multiplexing configurations.

The physics of nanowire superconducting single-photon detectors

Jelmer J. Renema

We investigate the detection mechanism in superconducting single photon detectors via quantum detector tomography. We find that the detection event is caused by diffusion of quasiparticles from the absorption spot, combined with entrance of a vortex. Moreover, we investigate the behaviour of superconducting single photon detectors in an external magnetic field.

Monte-Carlo-Markov-Chain Detector Tomography of Nanobridge SNSPDs with 56% Quantum Efficiency

F. B. Baalbergen, Iman Esmaeil Zadeh, Martin P. van Exter +1 more

Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors (SNSPDs) are a leading technology for quantum optics and information, offering fast recovery, low timing jitter, high detection efficiency, and intrinsic photon number resolution, making them ideal for future quantum applications [1]. We introduce a Monte-Carlo-Markov-Chain (MCMC) approach to Detector Tomography for nanobridge NbTiN devices, separating internal and external quantum efficiencies. This is key to understanding SNSPD detection mechanisms and performance trade-offs.
