Abstract

We study the lifetime and coherence of single 171Yb3+ qubits in YVO4 in the context of Yb concentration, paramagnetic defects and nuclear spin interactions. Additionally, we works towards the control of an additional memory resource.

Quantum nodes made from single rare earth ions

Jörg Wrachtrup

Rare earth atoms are important as active elements in classical optical communication. Also for quantum information they turn out to be of great use owing to their outstandingly long nuclear spin lifetimes and convenient absorption wave lengths. A missing element so far was the capability to address single rare earth atoms which might be of importance for refined quantum protocols like entanglement purification etc. The talk will describe the detection of single rare earth ions as well as spin photon correlations on these systems.

Characterization of Yb 3 + 171 : YVO 4 for photonic quantum technologies

Jonathan M. Kindem, John G. Bartholomew, Philip J. T. Woodburn +5 more

Rare-earth ion crystals are a promising platform for implementing solid-state quantum interfaces, yet there are few combinations of rare-earth and host crystals that simultaneously deliver large optical absorption, narrow inhomogeneous linewidths, and long coherence times. This work investigates the optical and spin properties of ${}^{171}$Yb${}^{3+}$ ions in YVO${}_{4}$. The observed properties and simple energy-level structure of the ${}^{171}$Yb${}^{3+}$ ion show that this material has significant potential for creating efficient quantum interfaces, such as ensemble-based memories, microwave-to-optical transducers, and optically addressable single rare-earth ion spin qubits.
